<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Improvements to internal combustion engines.
The present improvements relate to devices for the injection of heavy oil into internal combustion engines which are described in main patent no. 357,844, and in particular to the injector used to introduce fuel into the cylinder of the engine, to the control mode of this injector and to the pump serving to supply it with fuel.
A first improvement consists in shaping the spring needle which closes the injector so as to obtain a good seal at all pressures and better pulverization of the injected fuel. For this purpose, the needle is (
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
ends with a tapered conical point connected by an obtuse truncated cone to a cylindrical part of larger diameter than the needle shank, which forms a shoulder on which the closing spring and the oil pressure act both to apply the needle on its seat.
This has a shape corresponding to that of the needle and also comprises a cylindrical part, a frustoconical part and a tapered conical part, at the end of which is the discharge port of the injector. The cylindrical part of the needle fits tightly into the corresponding cylindrical part of the seat to form a first Joint which is completed by the engagement of the respective frustoconical and conical parts of the needle and the seat. Grooves formed over a certain height in the cylindrical part of the needle allow the oil to pass towards the orifice of the injector when the needle is lifted by its control.
These grooves may be rectilinear or helical and may have a uniform width over their entire length or be narrower at their entrance than at their exit and widen towards it.
According to another improvement, the rocker arm which controls the needle is mounted on an eccentric pivot so that it is possible, by varying the eccentricity of the latter, to advance or delay the opening of the injector according to l speed of the engine to adjust the fuel supply to it.
This feed takes place under constant pressure as stated in the main patent, preferably by means of a rotary vane pump which delivers the fuel to the injector and which is constantly flooded with fuel.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
supplied by a tank located at a higher level. The pump is operated by the motor itself, through a suitable transmission.
Instead of having recourse to a special electrode spark plug as described in the main patent, an ordinary spark plug can be employed by arranging it so that the jet of fuel coming out of it. the injector passes between its electrodes, that is to say by placing it approximately perpendicular to the injector in a suitable support part communicating with the engine cylinder.
It is also advantageous to prolong the ignition throughout. the duration of the fuel injection so that it. ignites as it enters the cylinder * This is obtained by adding to the ordinary ignition switch several other switches offset between them so as to pro-. to reduce a series of consecutive sparks between the eleotrodes of the candle. on the attached drawing:

Fig. 2 shows a variant of the needle.

Fig. 6 is a schematic view of a detail.
The needle 1 of the injector 2 has at the base a cylindrical part 3 of greater diameter than the rod 1, se, n
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
extends by a frustoconical part 4 and ends in a tapered conical point 5. To these different parts of the needle correspond, in the body of the injector 2, a cylindrical seat 6, a frustoconical seat 7 and a conical seat 8 to the The end of which is pierced the discharge orifice 9 which opens out into a cone 10 opening to the outside and towards which two capillary conduits 11 converge for the mixing air.
A shoulder 12 formed by the difference in diameter between the rod 1 and the cylindrical part 6 receives the combined pressure of the oil and the spring 13 which tend to apply the needle on its seat to hermetically close the orifice 9 to the end. using the triple seal 3-6, 4-7 and 5-8.
In the cylindrical part 3 of the needle are cut grooves 14 which stop at a certain distance from the upper edge of this part, so as not to let the oil pass when the needle is fully inserted into the cylindrical 6 , but to give it passage when the needle is slightly raised. The oil filtering in several streams through these grooves spreads out in a sheet on the conical surfaces 7 and 8 of the seat and thus gains the orifice 9 where it is sprayed through the cone 10, mixing with the air drawn in by the cones. - duits 11 as explained in the main patent.
The grooves 14 can be either reotilinear as in fig.l, or helical as shown at 14 'in fig. 2, the latter form being more suitable in the case of low displacement engines. in fig. 3, the needle 1 is controlled by a cam 15 by means of a rocker arm 16 pivoting on an eccentric 17 itself carried by a shaft 18. By operating the eccentric 17 using any lever wedged. on tree 18 we can
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
move the rocker arm relative to the cam so that the latter attacks it more or less early in the course of its rotation, so as to give a greater or lesser advance to the injection of fuel into the engine, in relation to the speed of the latter.
In some engines, the fuel injector and spark plug may be mounted on the cylinder head at the location usually occupied by the inlet valve. one can use for this purpose the part 19 shown in FIG. 4, the threaded base 20 of which is screwed into the cylinder head of the engine and which has two internally threaded openings 21 and 22 intended to receive the fuel injector and the spark plug respectively. The axis of the opening 21 and that of the opening 22 are approximately perpendicular to each other, so that if an ordinary two-electrode spark plug is used, the jet of fuel exiting the injector screwed into the opening 21 passes between the electrodes of the spark plug screwed into the opening 22.
The feed pump shown in FIG. 5 comprises a rotor 23 housed eccentrically in a casing 24 and provided with retractable vanes 25 which are held by springs 26 in intimate contact with the eccentric surface of the casing 24. This pump delivers the fuel through a conduit 27. tible which it receives via an intake duct 28, but it only gives the required pressure when it is constantly flooded with fuel, which is obtained by placing a fuel tank 29 communicating with the upper level. intake duct 28.
This tank 29 can be the main tank of the installation or, as in the case of the drawing, a small auxiliary tank inserted in
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the pipe connecting the pump to the main reservoir with which it communicates through an orifice 30 and a pipe, not shown. If the auxiliary tank 29 is at a higher level than the main tank, a certain pressure must be maintained therein, by means of an air pump for example, in order to raise the fuel so that the auxiliary tank in still contains enough to flood the pump.
To maintain the air pressure in the main tank, it is also possible to insert a device in the overflow pipe 31 (Fig. 6) which returns to this tank the excess fuel delivered by the supply pump. Aspiration similar to a Giffard tube, so that the flow of oil going to the reservoir carries air in it. The current of oil passing through the cone 32 then through the diffuser 33, sucks the outside air through the tube 34 connected to the pipe 31. A valve 35 mounted in the tube 34 and provided with a float 36 s' applies to its seat 37 when this float is lifted by the oil, and thus prevents the latter from escaping through the tube 34 if the pump operates irregularly.
Although the use of a float valve is advantageous, any other suitable type of check valve could of course be employed.
