<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"Process and apparatus for carbinization and low temperature distillation of coals, lignites and oil shales"
The present invention relates to an installation and a process for the carbonization and distillation at low temperature of coals, lignites and oil shales.
The installation according to the present invention essentially comprises a succession of carbonization chambers, which will preferably have a square shape, and are intended to each receive a plurality of distillation retorts, these distillation chambers each being flanked by two. lateral combustion chambers with which they communicate by suitable openings, the carbonization chambers and the combustion chambers being arranged one after the other.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In addition, the learned installation of the present invention comprises a succession of dampers which will have substantially the same shape and capacities as the distillation chambers, so as to be able to receive all the retorts of a distillation chamber. . The distillation chambers will advantageously be arranged in several beds, for example in two beds, which can rest on the ground; the dampers may be placed between two consecutive blocks and will advantageously be formed in cavities made in the ground below the distillation chambers.
The retorts used for the distillation will advantageously be frustoconical, the large base being at the upper part, and will include a central longitudinal pipe pierced with holes for the evacuation of the distilled gases, in addition, each of these retorts will be packed at its lower part with an internal collar, intended to support a tube holder washer convex towards the middle on which the internal tube of the distilled gases is placed; these retorts will also carry at their upper end an external collar, arranged so as to be able to be bolted hearth: in a sealed manner to a support plate which will be discussed later.
The internal distillate gas tube may include, at its upper part, an internal recessing collar intended to ensure the rigidity of the pipe and the retorts may be reinforced by longitudinal T-bars intended to ensure rigidity. The lower part of the retorts, below the internal collar, may be bevelled so as to be able to sink into the sand.
The different retorts contained in the same distillation chamber may, according to the invention, be assembled rigidly from below; each distillation chamber will have at its lower part a layer of sand of suitable thickness, for example 30 cms.,. in which the bevelled parts of the retorts can be inserted so as to achieve a tight seal between the different retorts.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The retorts will be assembled at their upper part by an assembly plate resting by appropriate tenons in grooves filled with sand from a cast iron shoe secured to the upper walls of the distillation chambers so as to achieve sealing, this The plate will have a series of holes intended for the passage of the retorts, the edges of these orifices being prepared so as to be able to be bolted to the upper flanges of the retorts, possibly with the interposition of asbestos plates to ensure the seal. In addition, the plates include tenons intended to rest on the cast iron shoes of the walls of the furnace, as well as a bead intended to receive the lid of the furnace.
This plate will therefore isolate in a sealed manner the space between the plate and the cover intended to collect the products of the distillation, and the space located under the plate, and serving for the passage of the heating fluid.
The lids rest by joints in the sand, on the assembly plate, so as to form between the upper end of the retorts opening out above the plates and the cover itself a collecting chamber for the distilled products. These products will be evacuated by a pipe opening into the cover and integral with this cover and provided with a closing valve, the products evacuated by this pipe then being directed into a collecting tube for the products to be evacuated. These retorts are therefore assembled in such a way that they can, when the evacuation valve for the distilled products is closed, be lifted as a block and transported in the dampers, without the distilled products being able to escape so much. that the valve is closed.
Each block is flanked by a fuel gas pipe and a combustion air pipe, which
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
each communicates by connecting pipes, provided with Tannes with the combustion chambers, these two pipes preferably being arranged towards the lower external part of the block.
These beds are also flanked by a flue gas pipe communicating by pipes with each of the distillation chambers and with one combustion chamber per distillation chamber, this pipe further comprising a number of valves corresponding to the number of distillation chambers so as to be able to carry out the by-pass of the burnt gases between the various distillation chambers; a second ducting of the cooled burnt gases serves to evacuate the gases which have given up their calories to the various carbonization chambers.
In addition, the dampers may include a suitable and appropriate number of baffles so as to allow the passage of the combustible air through the dampers to heat the latter before use, and to recover the calories lost by the dampers. dampers.
Installation is further completed by a traveling bridge constructed and arranged so as to be able to lift the block of retorts provided with lids and their upper assembly plate and to transport them to the damper intended to receive them.
The distillation and treatment of products in the oven according to the invention will take place according to the following process. The product to be carbonized will be changed in the retorts of the furnace having been fired during the previous period; the products will then be heated by the burnt gases which have already passed (through a series n of previous chambers; at the following time, ie when a new batch of products has been distilled, the product will be heated by the burnt gases having passed through n - 1 room and so on until
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
when the product itself will be heated directly by the combustion of gas.
After this period all the products contained in the chamber will be removed and transported en bloc in a damper where they are cooled by a current of combustion air. After being cooled long enough the semi-coke produced will be removed and transported to the rocker arms.
An embodiment of the invention will be described below in detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, but it should be understood that the installation as shown by the drawings, is capable of include numerous modifications in its execution, without departing from the limits of the invention.
In these drawings: FIG. 1 represents an elevation view of an installation comprising two blocks resting on the ground and a series of dampers placed below between these two blocks; FIG. 2 represents a plan view of part of the same installation; FIG. 3 represents a side view of the installation showing part of a section along A-B in one of the blocks of the distillation chambers and along C-D t in the block of the dampers. ; FIG. 4 represents details of the execution of the retorts, and of their upper assembly plate; FIG. 5 shows the upper assembly plate in section; Figure 6 shows a plan view of Figure 4 and Figure 5.
Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3 of these drawings, the installation described comprises twenty distillation chambers.

Each distillation chamber has a series of retorts e whose details will be shown in Figures 4 and 6, these retorts may be in a suitable number, for example sixteen in number and arranged symmetrically in a square.
Referring more specifically to Figure 4, each of the retorts! will have an elongated shape and be advantageously frustoconical. the larger base being the upper base so as to facilitate the stripping of the semi-coke which takes place by inverting the block of retorts. The retorts presented will have an inner lower collar 1 serving as a support for a tuba-holder washer 2 domed in the center as shown in FIG. 4, which washer. serves as a support for the interior pipe 3, perforated laterally and serving to evacuate the distilled gases in the retort. The lower part 4 of the retorts is bevelled, so as to be able to sink into the sand.
The upper edge of the retorts has a flange 5 intended to be bolted to the assembly plate which will be discussed later.
In order to ensure the rigidity of the retorts e, these will be reinforced by longitudinal T-bars 6. The discharge pipe for the glowing gases 5 can also be

reinforced at the upper part extending beyond the edge of the retort, par. an internal collar 7 intended to ensure the rigidity of this pipe.
Referring to Figures 5 and, ±, each com-. bustion comprises an upper assembly plate t, the section of which is shown in FIG. 5. This assembly plate comprises openings 7 'intended to provide passage for the distillation retorts; the edges 8 of these openings will be drawn up so that they can be assembled to the collar 5, for example by means of bolts 9.
In order to ensure the seal between the flanges 5 and the surfaces 8 of the plate, it is possible, for example, to interpose plates of asbestos or other material, intended to ensure the seal. The plate also has a peripheral groove 10, intended to receive the cover.
11 of the chamber 'which will be described in detail hereinafter, these grooves 10 being able to be filled with sand so as to form a sand seal with the cover. The plate also comprises a tenon 12 intended to rest on a cast iron shoe 24 integral with the frame of the furnace, so as to form a tight seal between the plate and the walls of the distillation chamber. Finally, the plate may include eyelets 13 intended for lifting.
Referring to Figures 1 and 3, the retorts e are assembled at their lower part in a rigid manner, by means of suitable parts 14, the effect of which, in addition to that of the plate t, makes it possible to assemble in an indeformable block the retorts e. In addition, the bottom of each distillation chamber will be covered with a layer of sand 15, of suitable thickness, which may for example be 30 cm. and in which sand the bevelled ends 4 of the horns will be able to sink. In this way, a tight seal is produced from below between the different retorts.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
Referring to Figures 1, 3 and 4, each distillation chamber will be closed at its upper part by a cover 11 resting by a sand seal 10 on the plate shown in section in Figure 5. This cover comprises a pipe 16 integral with said cover, and serving -vant for the evacuation of the distillation gases collected between the cover 11 and the plate t shown in section in FIG. 5; this discharge pipe will also be provided with a closing valve 17.
The upper walls of the distillation chambers will include cast iron shoes 24, provided with a joint to the sand intended to receive the tenons 12 of the plate, and to form a tight seal.
Referring more specifically to Figures 1 and 2, each block will be flanked by a series of pipes and will include in particular a pipe 18 for the combustion air, a pipe 19 for the combustible gas, a pipe 20 for the burnt gases and a collecting pipe 21 for the products of the distillation, and another pipe 20 'serving for the evacuation of the cooled flue gases. as shown in fig. 3, the chambers al a6 a11 a12 will be heated according to the principle of the reverse heat, the burnt and hot gases will then pass successively into the following chambers, the pipe and the set of valves adjusted so as to achieve the bypass hot gases.
The products will be heated gradually first by the increasingly hot flue gases, and eventually be heated directly by the combustion of combustible gases.
The distilled products are assembled between the cover 11 and the plate t, and are evacuated through line 26.
When the products have reached a sufficient stage of distillation, the retort blocks contained in these chambers will be transported in the dampers; for example at 400 or 450, for this purpose the number of dampers will generally be twice as high as the number of chambers simultaneously ignited '
In the example shown and described, the chambers a1, a6 a11 and a16 will be on fire, the hot burnt gases leaving the chamber a1 will pass through the bypass successively through the chambers a2 a3 a4 a5, where they will give up their calories.
At the following time, chambers a2 a7 a12 and a17 will be on fire, and the hot burnt gases evacuated by chamber a2 will pass through a3 a4 a5 a6.
The combustion air can advantageously be heated by making it pass through appropriate baffles shown in FIG. 3 around the dampers, so as to direct the cold air towards the coldest dampers, to be then directed into the pipe. of combustion air, by means of pipes not shown in the drawings.
In addition, the installation may be supplemented by fans or any other device capable of ensuring proper circulation of the gases, and good evacuation of the distilled products or of the burnt gases.
It should be understood that the installation described is only one embodiment of the invention and that
