<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Coupling devices for wagons
The present invention relates to the coupling mounts of railway wagons and more especially to a device for bringing the coupling bar into operative connection with the coupling jaw, and the main object of this invention is to provide means by which this small bar has a radial movement with respect to this jaw, without subjecting it to unequal forces and without harming the.
elastic mechanism associated with this jaw. In other words, this invention provides means for transmitting the tensile forces, in an equally distributed manner, from the key to the two adjacent parts of the jaw and for constituting the coupling bar so as to return the action of shocks on the elastic mechanism leaving its center, whatever the position of the coupling relative to the axis of the wagon.
To this end, the main object of the present invention is generally to provide a bar
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
coupling connected by a key, to form this bar into a plurality of parts, and to connect these parts in such a way that they can pivot with respect to one another, at the same time as their relative translation is prevented,
Another object of the present invention is to provide a two-part tie rod assembled in such a way that they allow the necessary or desired pivoting movement of this rod relative to the jaw, and in at the same time to provide means by which the traction transmitted by the bar is distributed equally over the jaw,
whatever the position of this bar.
For the aforesaid bats and others still, the invention consists. in various elements and combinations of elements which will be described hereinafter, the novel characteristics being designated in the claims which follow the present description.
According to the accompanying drawings, which show two devices embodying the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a top plan view, partially in horizontal section, showing the connection of the bar and the jaw according to this invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the bar shown in FIG. l, the key connecting this bar being shown in section,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section along the axis of the coupling bar, shown in the preceding figures.
Fig. 4 is a view, partly in section and partly in plan, of a tie rod differing in small details from that shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. 5 is a view partially in longitudinal section taken along the axis of the construction shown in FIG.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
4, and partially in side elevation.
Fig. 6 is a view, half in end elevation, half in cross section of the construction shown in FIGS. 4 and 5.
In the description and in the figures the same parts are designated by the reference marls.
# referring first to fig. 1 to 3, inclusive the jaw having coupling means, which may have any well-designed shape, is designated by the reference l, and the coupling bar 2 is connected to this jaw 1, by means of the key 3 laid transversely. The tie rod preferably comprises a plurality of parts 4 and 5, the outer part 4 being preferably formed integrally with the head of the bar (not shown) while the inner part 5 forms the part which transmits the tensile force of the bar 2.
Practice and experience have shown clearly that the action of the shocks received by the coupling greatly exceeds that of the tensile forces to which it is subjected; consequently and according to the present invention a form of connection is provided between the parts of the coupling, which allows the transmission of the impact actions of this coupling to the elastic mechanism without harming the parts or parts of the coupling bar, and which provides an entirely different form of connection between the parts of the rod subjected to tensile forces.
The part or part 4 of this rod is preferably provided with a plurality of arms or flanges 6 extending rearwardly, the ends of which are curved or rounded and form bearing surfaces 7, and to the junction of the arms 6 with the part 4, vertical blades 8 are preferably established, the internal faces of which are curved or rounded and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
are concentric with the faces 7 of the ends of the arms 6 directed towards the rear. Part 5 of the bar may be called, for ease of description, "the rotating block". This: ,, block is provided with a plurality of notches or grooves 9 adapted to each receive an arms 6.
The middle part 10 of the part 5 is aasbi provided with a notch 11, the bat of which will be described below.
As is clearly shown in Fig. 1, the ends of the parts 12 of the part 5, likewise due to the end of the middle part 10, are curved or rounded so as to cooperate with the curved faces of the blades oa flanges 8 and similarly the bottom of the notches or grooves 9 is curved or. rounded, in order to cooperate with the rounded oa curved faces 7 of the arms 6. To connect the interposed parts in their functions! and 5, a vertical window 13 is provided which is adapted to extend through the parts 12, the arms 6 and the part
10 middle of the part 5. The curved faces @ mentioned above, are obviously concentric at this point 13.
The notch 11, cited plas haat, extends behind the front edge of the pivot 13, and the part 4 is provided with a notch 14 cooperating with the previous one, and which extends forward between the extensions towards the interior of the blades 8. This notch, which may be partially formed in the two parts 4 and 5, as shown, is adapted to receive the coupling key 3 of which it has mentioned above, and in order to place this key at the required distance from the rear face of the part 5, the pivot 13 is suitably notched, as in 15. The reciprocal engagement between the transverse key 3 and the vertical pivot 13 is used for a double bat.
This arrangement prevents the rotation of the pivot 13, as well as the accidental loss of this pivot and @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the consecutive damage it would cause to the equipment.
We can notice that the openings for the pivot, provided in the parts !! of the part 5 are lightly milled to accommodate therein the head 16 of the key and the widening of the periphery of this key at its lower end as is clearly shown at 17 in FIG.
3. It should also be noted that the notch 14 of the part 4 extends in front of the front edge of the key 3, and that thus the head of the coupling bar can move by rotation around the pivot 13 as center, without causing bending or twisting of the key 3. The side walls 18 of the part 5 of the tie rod can be provided with enlargements 19 suitably reinforced by ribs 20, and which provide an additional bearing area next to the key soamis aax tensile forces.
It is obvious that the action of the shocks will cause the curved bearing faces of the two parts of the tie rod 2 to engage and that a suitable transverse area of metal will be provided between them to directly transmit these shock actions. garlic elastic mechanism which is placed behind the posterior face of part 5 and in contact with it. During traction efforts, the action on. the tie rod is transmitted from the 6 arms to the pivot 13 and from that !! to part 5 and from this part to key 3 and from this to jaw 1.
It should be noted, however, that during the tensile forces, the pivot is subjected to a quadruple shear force and that since this pivot 13 is suitably drawn over its entire length, any danger of torsion is avoided and a sufficient section of metal is designed to resist all stresses resulting from traction.
In Figs. 4 to 6, inclusive, the arrangement
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
of the parts is substantially the same. The main difference between the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3 and that of Figs. 4 to 6, inclusive, consists in the increase in the dimensions of the coarse faces 7a and 8a, and in the location of the. pivot 13a, It should also be noted that for this second form of device, the bearing air of part 5a of bar 2a is materially increased, where it is adapted to be brought into contact with the mechanism. elastic CLAIMS - @
