" TOUR Il
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

et le dem&&ouBainet mobile.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

The present invention relates to a lathe comprising a mechanism for changing speed between the driving pulley and the movable shaft serving to drive the workpiece.
In lathes not of this type known, this speed change mechanism is arranged on the side of the movable shaft opposite to that where the tool is located. As a result, the reactions on the movable shaft, the wheel which drives it and the tool are directed in the same direction. The component of these two reactions applies the movable shaft very strongly against part of its bearings and the wear of this part is excessive and premature. This is also what causes the chatter of all the towers.
To remedy these drawbacks, the invention provides for the complete arrangement of the change mechanism.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the aforementioned speed limit on the tool side. As a result, the reaction on the movable shaft of the wheel which drives it is directly opposed to the reaction of the tool.
These two reactions are balanced and the movable shaft only presses in its two bearings with a force equal to its own weight plus the weight of the workpiece.
The invention also provides a particular arrangement of the speed change mechanism interposed between the drive pulley and the movable shaft of a revolution. According to the invention, this mechanism comprises gears integral with the shaft carrying the driving pulley, said gears meshing with gears mounted idly on a second shaft but capable of being angularly wedged on this second shaft, the one. - here bringing with it a certain number of engfenages with which it is possible to engage gears meshing at the same time with others carried by the mobile shaft.
@
Some of these gears are / preferably cut in one piece with the shaft that carries them.
Others are mounted idle on the shaft which carries them, but can be made integral with them by means of claw sleeves wedged angularly on the shaft and which, according to the invention, are displaced axially by means of a pin. gnon rotated and whose teeth are engaged in circumferential grooves made at the periphery of these sleeves.
The invention also provides that the gears which can be engaged with those driven by the second shaft are carried by shafts, the distance of which relative to this second shaft can be varied. This variation in distance is carried out according to the invention, in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the trees. This provision
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
tion allows the use of any kind of toothing for gears and avoids marking the teeth of one gear in others.
Some of the gears that can be engaged with those carried by the second shaft are angularly wedged on this shaft and cannot be moved axially. This axial displacement can be effected by means of a fork, the two branches of which are arranged on either side of one of these gears, the said fork being, for example, integral with a rack which can be displaced. by rotating a toothed sector.
The invention also provides for the gears actuating the movable shaft to engage the latter below the horizontal plane passing through the axis of this shaft. This arrangement also helps to avoid chatter.
Another object of the invention consists in installing the bearings supporting the movable shaft towards the front, by two half-bearings, one of which is fixed to the casing and the other of which is of adjustable position. in height.
This arrangement makes it possible to compensate for the wear existing between the movable shaft and its front bearing. In the case where the gear change mechanism interposed between the driving pulley and the movable shaft is disposed completely on the side of the tool, the upper half-bearing is fixed to the housing, while the lower half-bearing is height adjustable position. The displacement of the movable half-pad can then be effected by means of screws bearing on the casing and which can be immobilized in any desired position. A steel plate is preferably available between the tip of these screws.

<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a lathe comprising a fixed shaft carrying the point and a movable shaft driving the workpiece, that these shafts are arranged in the extension of one another. The fixed shaft can, according to the invention, be displaced axially, a ball bearing being advantageously interposed between the fixed shaft and the movable shaft. This fixed shaft is preferably hollow and the point which it carries is mounted therein in a removable manner. This arrangement has the advantage of allowing the bars to be worked to pass through the fixed shaft and the movable shaft, the latter being naturally hollow in order to allow the point to be placed in the hollow fixed shaft. .
In addition, if the gears carried by the movable shaft are cut in this shaft, its thickness can be reduced by increasing the diameter of its hollow, which allows the work of bars of a relatively large diameter.
Finally, the invention provides that in a lathe in which the movement of the movable shaft is transmitted by the gears to a shaft moving the tool carriage forward, that this shaft can be controlled in both directions at several speeds. different.
Other details and features of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended hereto, which show, by way of example only, one embodiment of the lathe according to the invention.

Figure 8 is a schematic view in the direction of the arrow X of Figure 1 of the movable shaft and its front bearing.
FIG. 9 shows schematically in perspective, after partial breakages, the mechanism serving to control the shaft actuating the carriage at two different speeds whatever its direction of rotation.
In FIG. 1, it is assumed that the axes of the various shafts carrying the gears were located in the same plane. The exact arrangement of these trees is given by figures 3, 4 and 5.
The driving pulley 2a is wedged on a 'shaft. ±. from the mass of which a certain number of gears 2b, 2b ', 2b ", 2b"' have been cut. This shaft 2 is mounted in a housing 3, by means of bearings 4.
The gears 2b, 2b ', 2b "2b"', mesh with other gears 5a, 5a ', 5a ", 5a"', mounted idle on a second shaft 5 by means of bearings 5b. These gears 5a, 5a '. 5a ", 5a" ', can be angularly wedged on the shaft 5 by means of grooved sleeves.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
fes 6, the periphery of which is provided with a certain number of circumferential grooves 6a, in which the rients of pinions 1 are engaged, which can be set in rotation by acting on levers 7a provided with a control lock 7b, This control lock can engage in three holes made in the housing 3 and for which the claw sleeves ± are either integral with one or the other of the gears 5a, or 5a ',
5a "5a" 'arranged on either side of them, ie desolidarized from these two gears. The gears 5a 5a ', 5a ", 5a"', are prevented from moving during the engagement and disengagement operations by means of projections not shown, carried by the housing. They dive into trays 3a fixed inside the housing.
The shaft 5 also carries gears 5d and 5f wedged on it and a gear 5g cut in its mass.
The transmission of the rotational movement of these gears 5d, 5f, and 5g to the movable shaft 8 is effected by means of gears which can be in contact with them at the same time as with gears carried by the movable shaft. 8. This contacting is effected by moving these gears in a plane perpendicular to the axis of shafts 5 and 8. This can be obtained for example, by angularly wedging gears 9a and 9b on a mounted shaft 9, by the intermediate bushings 9d, in the arms of a lever 10 pivoting around a fixed shaft 11, the axis of which is parallel to the axes of the shafts 5 and 8 (figs. 1, 3 and 6), the said shaft 11 being independent of any moving organ.
The shaft 9 also has, cut in its mass, a gear 9g which can mesh with a meshing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
ge 8a of the mobile tree @
The gears 9a, 9b can be moved axially on the shaft 9¯. When the gear 9b is not in contact with the gear 5g, the gear @ does not mesh with the gear 5f.
To bring the gear 9b into contact with the gear 5f, move the shaft 9 away from the shaft 5, then move the gears 9a and 9b in the direction of the arrow Y and finally, bring shaft 9 closer to shaft 5.
The axial displacement of the gears 9a and 9b, which are moreover integral, can be effected as shown in FIG. 7, by means of a fork 12, the two branches of which are arranged on either side of gear 9a, this fork being made integral with a rack 12a meshing with a toothed sector 13 which can be rotated by acting on a lever 13a.
It is also possible to bring into contact with the gear 5d, a gear 14a mounted idly by means of a bearing 14b on a shaft 14 carried by a lever 15 (figs.1, 4 and 6) pivoting around the same shaft. 11 than lever 10. When in contact with gear 5d, gear 14a is also in contact with gear 8b, carried by movable shaft 8.
When the gears 9a, 8b, and 14a are set in contact with the gears 5g, 5f or 5d, they are held in this position by the immobilization of the pivoting levers 10 or 15. This immobilization can be carried out as shown in fig.3. and 4 by abutting screws 16 against steel plates 3b integral with the casing 3, this abutment causing the application to be applied.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
tion of levers 10 or 15 against face 3d of housing 3.
The movable shaft 8 is mounted at the front in two half-bearings 17 and 18, the upper 17 of which is fixed to the housing 3. As all the mechanism described above is shown to be disposed on the side of the tool, the wear of these half-bearings is virtually zero. In fact, the upper cushion 17 does not normally withstand a reaction, since the motor force and the reaction of the tool are balanced. The lower bearing 18 only wears out as a result of the slight friction due to the weight of the movable shaft 8 and of the part which it carries, during its rotation.
However, to avoid any play between the movable shaft and its bearing, so as to prevent any chattering, the inversion. provides for mounting the lower bearing 18 on a steel plate 19 below which abut screws 20 engaged in the housing 3. These screws can be immobilized in the suitable position by means of screws 21, the point of which can engage in the thread of the screws 20.
Behind the movable shaft 8 is disposed, in the housing 3, a fixed shaft 22. This fixed shaft 22 is hollow and has a conical part 22a in which the tip-holder pin can be engaged. interior of the movable shaft 8. This is supported at the rear by an internally conical bearing 23 and engaged on a corresponding part of the fixed shaft 22. This bearing 23 is split longitudinally and can be moved according to its position. axis by rotating a ring 24 screwed onto a cylindrical part of the fixed shaft 22. It is thus possible to take up the play formed between the fixed and mobile shafts.
The axial thrust transmitted to the fixed shaft 22
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
is supported by the casing 3. by means of a threaded ring 25 screwed to the outside of the fixed arbra 22 and bearing against the casing 3. The screwing of this ring. on the fixed shaft 22 makes it possible to take up the play occurring between the fixed shaft and the movable shaft.
This wear is moreover almost negligible as a result of the use of a ball bearing 26 between the fixed shaft 22 and the movable shaft 8.
To control the shaft actuating the tool-holder carriage in both directions and for each direction at two different speeds, the invention provides + 'use of the mechanism which will be described below:
The movable shaft 8 carries a gear 8d which engages with a gear 27a wedged on a shaft 27, the bearings 27b and 27d of which are respectively arranged in the casing .3. and in a part 27f fixed thereon.
The shaft 27 serves as a pivot for two levers 28 and 29 mounted on it by means of bearings 30 and 31. It also carries a claw sleeve 32 which can be displaced axially by rotating a pinion 33 whose teeth are engaged. in the circular grooves 32a the periphery of which is pierced.
This sleeve can make one or the other of the gears 34 or 35 mounted on the shaft 27 integral with the shaft 27 by means of bearings 36 or 21. These gears 34 and 35 are prevented from shifting. move axially by stop rings 34a or 35a.
The lever 28 carries pivots 38 and 39 (figs.5 and 9). On these pivots, gears 40 and 41 are madly mounted. These gears constantly mesh with each other. The gear .41 meshes with the gear 34 whatever the position of the lever 28. Vans the yosi-

tion of the lever 28 shown in Figures 5 and 9, the gear 41 also meshes with a gear 42 wedged on the shaft 43 controlling the movements of the tool-holder carriage. This shaft is mounted in the housing 3 and in a part 51 fixed to this housing by means of bearings 52 and 53.
If the lever 28 is placed in a position such that the latch 28a engages in the notch 44, the gear 41 is no longer in contact with the gear 42, but the gear 40 is not. still in contact with the latter. If this lever 28 is placed in a position such that the latch 28a is engaged in the notch 45, the gear 40 is in contact with the gear 42 and causes the latter to rotate in the opposite direction following which it turns. arises when the gear 41 was in contact with the gears 34¯ and 42. The speed of rotation of the shaft 43 is however the same as before.
In order to be able to rotate this shaft at a different speed, whatever its direction of rotation, the invention provides that the lever and carries two pivots 46 and 47 (fig. @), These pivots respectively carrying a gear 48 and 49. These pivots two gears constantly mesh with each other. Gear 49 meshes constantly with gear 35. For the position shown, it meshes at the same time with a gear 50 wedged on shaft 43.
The lever 29 can be moved so that the gear .. @ .. no longer meshes with the gear 50 while the gear 48 'is not yet meshing with the latter.
It can also be moved so that gear 48 meshes with gear 50. The ratio of spokes of gears 35 and 50 being different from that of gears.

ges 34 and 42, the shaft 43 can be driven in both directions at a speed different from that with which it was driven by the gear 42,
If instead of turning the shaft 43 at two different speeds, one wants to make it turn at a greater number of speeds, it suffices to increase the number of similar mechanisms to 34, 28, 40, 41 and 42 .
The rotation of the shaft 43 at two different speeds makes it possible in particular to move the tool-holder carriage at a higher speed when the tool is not working than when it is working.
It is obvious that the invention is not exclusively limited to the embodiment shown and that many modifications can be made in the form and the arrangement of the elements involved in its realization without departing from the scope of the present patent.
