" Pharesd'automobiles."
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Automobile headlights."
The object of the present invention is to construct automobile headlights and the like in such a way that it is possible, at will, to change the position of part or of more parts of the reflector, and without substantially changing. the light intensity, thereby changing the distribution of light, for example in such a way that a fraction of the light beam is always projected forward in the form of mainly parallel rays, while the rest of the beam is sent, perhaps be a little diffused, in another direction.
The device can be advantageously constructed so that the beam of light rays, for the most part parallel, coming from one of the reflectors of the headlight, for example from the right-hand half or from another suitable portion, remains unaltered when the device is in operation. , while the light rays coming from the other half or portion are
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
directed for example to the right and more or less diffused.
The dazzling effect of the headlight towards oncoming vehicles is thus halved and at the same time strong illumination is obtained on the right side of the roadway.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which: Fig.1 is a front view of a headlight reflector and Fig.2 is a horizontal median section of the same.
In the construction shown the reflector of the headlight is divided longitudinally into a fixed right half 3 and a movable left half 4. The bulb 5 can be attached to the right half 3 of the reflector.
The movable half 4 of the reflector can be held in a normal position in the body of the headlight by means of a suitable spring, for example a flat spring, one end of which is connected to the half 4 of the reflector and the other end to the headlight body. Another way is to place part 4 of the reflector, as illustrated, on an articulation rod 6 surrounded by a spring 7, or a similar spring, which serves to keep the movable part 4 of the reflector symmetrical to the rigid part. 3 of the reflector.
Normally the lighthouse acts in the usual way. When encountering vehicles coming in the opposite direction, part 4 of the reflector may be rotated by any suitable means, for example wire or rope 8, acting at a suitable point on part 4 of the reflector. reflector, for example by an arm 9, see fig. 2. Part 4 of the reflector is turned at a small angle about an axis 10 which is tangent to the extreme left of part 4 of the reflector, for example the axis of the hinge pin 6 in the fig.l.
Part 4 of the reflector thus rotates up to position 40 shown in dotted lines, and the light rays of part 4 of the reflector
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
will then be directed to the right side of the road, as shown in fig. 2, perhaps a little diffused.
The two halves of the reflector - or any suitable portion of the same - may be rotated as described for part 4 of the reflector, or in any other suitable manner, so that one or the other, or both parts at the same time, the reflector can * be moved in the same or opposite directions. In this way, the device complies with traffic regulations on the right or on the left, and in the bends it will be possible for the driver to take marks on one side or the other.
