<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Scutching machine for tow and waste: flax and other similar textile fibers.
The present invention relates to a madhine for scutching tow and waste of flax, hemp, and other similar textile fibers to which the straw still partially adheres and which must not, because of their short length, be scutched in the form of a sheet ensuring the parallelism of the fibers. Its aim is to achieve the application, to the scutching of tows and short fibers, of the scutching principle to the pond, i.e. according to which the material advances slowly in the working field of scutching mills turning at high speed so that the ponds with which these mills are provided strike, by their cutting, a notch in the freely suspended stems and separate the fibers of the straws by sliding along these stems.
In the case of scutching of tows or other short fibers, however, the material to be scutched cannot travel in the direction of the axis of the tailoring mills; in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
because of its short length, its passage must be only transverse and the action of the ponds must be repeated a large number of times so that they act as close as possible to the point of maintenance of the fibers which cannot be returned.
This result is obtained) in accordance with the present invention by virtue of the fact that the tows are brought to the scutchers provided with a large number of pockets by a grooved roller cooperating with a guide plate, preferably rence exerting an elastic pressure, and marrying the periphery of the grooved roller up to the vertical plane, or more or less in the vertical plane, passing through the axis of this roller so as to allow the shells I to exert their ac- tion at a very short distance from the end of this sheet.
In the practical realization of the intention, the tows fed to the machine in the form of a web of suitable width fall freely between the scutching mills, after being subjected to the action of the chucks, and are subjected to the pressure action of an agitating drum or rotating shaker which throws the straw and dust through separating grids; these tows are then collected, with the straws which still adhere to them, by a conveyor which brings them to a second similar machine completing the work: the first.
The accompanying drawing shows schematically by way of example one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1. shows the assembly of a machine with two working stages,
FIG. 2 shows separately the cable feed roller cooperating with a sheet: the elastic pressure guide.
In this drawing, 1 designates the casing of the machine in which are mounted on shafts 2 two scutching drums 3 each carrying a number and 'ponds 4 (nine in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the example chosen) mounted at the end of arms carried by the shafts 3. These drums 6 are closed, in the direction of their length by sheets 5 intended, as in the scutching machines for flax, to prevent fibers to fold up around the ponds 4 during the action of these. In the vertical plane of intersection of the two scutching drums 3 is disposed a grooved roller 6, possibly made of rubber, cooperating with a guide plate 7 going around part of the periphery of the roller 6 and mounted so as to be able to oscillate. on an axis 8 extending in the direction: the width of the machine.
The lower end of this sheet 7 carries, as shown in Figure 2 a pin 9 on which acts at each end, a lever 10 pivoting on a fixed point 11 of the frame and subjected to the action of a spring 12 of fa - so that the sheet is pressed elastically against the grooves of the roller 6.
Above this roller 6 are mounted two grooved rollers 13 arranged tangentially to one another and against which bear: the joint strips 14, made of felt for example, carried by sliding drawers 15 subjected to the action of springs 6. These bands, resting against the rollers 13, preferably covered with rubber, ensure the closing of the machine in its upper part and prevent the escape of dust. Above the rollers 13 is arranged the feed mechanism of the machine comprising a grinder 17 and a feed apron 18.
Under the scutching drums 3 are arranged two grids 19 formed of bars suitably spaced apart, letting the straw and dust pass and leading the ;; materials worked with a stirrer or shaker drum 2) provided with paddles 21 possibly provided with saw teeth. When the scutching operation is carried out in two or more working phases, this drum 20 is partially bypassed by a grid 22 allowing the straw and dust to pass.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and bringing the materials to a conveyor 23 feeding the machine operating the second work phase.
The machine described operates as follows:
The tows or other short fibers to be treated are fed by the conveyor 18 in the form of a sheet of suitable thickness and of a width substantially corresponding to the width of the machine, to the grinder 17 from where they pass between the rollers. grooves 13 slowly turning. The fibers still held by these rollers are then drawn down between the corrugated roller 6 and the guide plate 7 which gradually bring them into the field of action of the ponds 4 of the tanbours scotters 3.
During work, the roller 6 and the sheet 7 hold the tows as the hand of the worker serving the ordinary Flemish scutching mill would do while the ponds 4, rotating at high speed, strike the freely suspended fibers. at the end of the sheet 7, produce the well-known scoring notch there and slide along the fibers advancing slowly in the field of action of the ponds * As the fibers are released from the roller 6 and the T8le 7 they fall between the mills on the agitator drum 20 rotating in the direction of the arrow 24. The loose straws and the dust are thus thrown through the grids 19 into the spaces 25 while the fibers are carried by the tanbour 33,
along the grid 22 to be fed to the conveyor 23 which possibly supplies them with a second similar machine. It should be noted, in fact, that the fibers contained in the tows, being particularly short (8 to 12 centimeters), there can be no question of working them successively by turning over as and is the case in scutching the flax itself; since these fibers are however only worked over only part of their length while they are held between the grooved roller 6 and the guide plate 7, it is useful to
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
subject them to additional work in one or more similar machines.
In this respect, the appended drawing shows, by way of example, the work in two phases, the pieces or short fibers, waste, and treated in the rst machine, being taken up, as they appear, by the conveyor apron 23 which brings them to a second machine completing the work of the first.
It will be noted that, in the machine described, the tows or waste are struck freely by the ponds 4 rotating at high speed and being folded under these ponds over a short length thanks to the presence of the sheets 5 closing the tapers in the tank. the axial direction. On the other hand, the two scutching drums penetrating only slightly into each other, it is possible to provide them with a large number of chucks which, thanks to the cooperation of the plate 7 with the roller The fluted water 6 can act in the immediate vicinity of the point where the fibers are held, which would not be possible if the feed were effected by a pair of rollers.
In the example described above, the two machines used for working in two phases have been represented as being at different levels. It is obvious, however, that these machines could also be installed at the same level, the conveyor 23 ensuring the transport of the material from one machine to another whatever arrangement is adopted.
