"pROCEDE DE MOULAGE DES ALLIAGES ALUMINIUM-SILICIUM. "
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"MOLDING PROCESS FOR ALUMINUM-SILICON ALLOYS."
The present invention relates to aluminum alloys containing silicon in substantial quantity, and its main object is, briefly, a simple and efficient molding process of aluminum-silicon alloys, owing to which the physical properties of these alloys. , such as tensile strength and malleability, are greatly improved.
The present invention is based on the discovery that these properties of aluminum-silicon alloys are substantially influenced by the rate of solidification of the molten alloy, rapid cooling, in view of completion of the process. - lidification, resulting in a very significant and advantageous increase in tensile strength and elongation at break.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The accompanying drawing, taken with the aid of a photomicrograph, with an enlargement of 250 diameters, shows the structure of an aluminum-aliliclum alloy containing ten percent silicon and molded in accordance with the present invention.
It is known that the casting of an aluminum alloy in the shell gives this alloy a finer grain and slightly better physical properties. However, the present invention is based on the discovery that in the case of aluminum-silicon aisles the said molding process, instead of only producing a general feedback of the grain size, and giving the Advantages which one might expect from such a change in structure, produces a fundamental change in the character of the structure of the alloy, and not a mere reduction in the size of all the grains, to which one might s 'wait according to what is con- rupted.
In general, the rapid cooling of an aluminum alloy, by its shell molding, aims to obtain a structure with uniformly small grain, a structure which is composed of constituent elements essentially similar to those which is found in alloys subjected to slow cooling, and differs from these only by their finer grain.
On the other hand, in the case of aluminum-silicon alloys, which are the subject of the present invention, it is a question of fundamentally changing not only the relative size and the arrangement of the constituent elements of aluminum and silicon, but also their. relative quantities.
This fundamental change obtained according to the present invention will be described in the following:
If commercially pure aluminum is cast so as to cool at about the same rate as in an ordinary sand mold, this aluminum has good elongation at break but rather low tensile strength. Thus, specimens two inches long by half an inch in diameter have a tensile strength of about 12,000
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
pounds per square inch and an elongation at break of approximately.
25 /. When aluminum is added with silicon, the tensile strength of the test piece increases by a value which depends on the amount of silicon added, while at the same time the elongation at break is considerably reduced.
For example, bars cast in sand molds, and having a content of about 90 / aluminum and 10 / silicon, have a tensile strength of about 0,000 pounds per square inch and an elongation of. only about 3 / breaking.
Under the microscope, silicon appears in the form of relatively large plates or needles, which weaken the metal and make it brittle.
On the other hand, it has been found according to the present invention that its alloy is molded under conditions which cause rapid cooling of the metal, the granular structure of the latter is considerably refined, this refinement being. accompanied by an increase in desirable properties from the standpoint of tensile strength and malleability.
The most suitable method of causing rapid cooling is to mold the alloy in so-called molds. , shells, that is to say in molds having walls capable of causing rapid evacuation of the chalaur from the molten metal. These molds are generally made of a iron metal, called iron or steel. They are generally referred to as permanent molds or dies, and are used for both gravity molding and die casting. The high intensity of heat removal usually obtained with die casting makes this molding process in general particularly advantageous for the purpose of the present invention.
Bars half an inch in diameter, molded in an iron mold having walls an average thickness of about an inch and a quarter, were completely solidified in fifteen to

The test pieces on which the test results indicated in the previous specification were observed were obtained under the conditions which have just been described.
The silicon content of the allige can be varied considering

8%, but in general it should not be less than about 30% or more than about 15%.
The best results have been obtained with alloys having a low iron content, preferably not exceeding 0.6 /, - but the advantages offered by the present invention
EMI4.3
your OR can be adjusted to a high extent, by pressure molding, with a much higher iron content.
Thus, specimens containing about 13 µm of silicon and 0.6 µm of iron, molded into shells of the aforementioned species, had a tensile strength of up to 1000 pounds per square inch and a lengthening of- rup-

EMI4.5
The aluminum-silicon eutectic alloy has a composition of about 11 * / 'to 12 /, silicon, and the remainder aluminum.
When solidifying by slow cooling,
EMI4.6
Alloys containing less than 11 / to 2Z / of silicon coin a euectic mixture plus an aluminum ee, while those which contain more than 11 / to 2 / consist of an entectic mixture plus an excess of silicon, and those which contain 11 / to 12 / of silicon consist substantially of a eutectic mixture.
It has been observed that rapid solidification changes visi-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The composition of the eutactic alloy becomes clearer, the greater the silicon content, at least up to a point, as the rate of solidification is faster.
For example, an alloy containing about 13% of silicon and slowly solidified eg by sand casting, consists of an effective mixture plus excess silicon particles. The same alloy, cast in an iron mold of relatively large sections, consists of a eutectic mixture plus aluminum dendrites - in excess. At the same time as the physical constitution, i.e. the arrangement and the size of the particles of the eutectic mixture, is considerably altered in the last example, by virtue of the rapid cooling, or shell molding, the chemical composition of this eutectic mixture also seems to have undergone a change.
In an alloy containing less than the so-called eutectic amount of silicon, rapid cooling or solidification produces a greater amount of excess aluminum and a smaller amount of eutectic mixture than is obtained. gets with slow cooling. With a higher silicon content, for example 15 / or more, the excess silicon may separate also in rapid solidifying mixing, albeit the amount separated; is then, in general, not as great as with a slow solidifying relief.
This tendency of the eutectic composition to undergo a change by virtue of rapid solidification, can produce in alloys with a high silicon content, excess silicon and in addition - which is very unusual - dendrites of aluminum.
In an alloy containing, for example, about silicon, the difference between the microstructures produced on the one hand by rapid solidification molding and on the other hand by ordinary solid molding. sand, seems to consist not only of a change (the arrangement and the relative dimensions of the constituent particles of silicon and aluminum,

but also in a change in their relative quantity.
When such an alloy is cooled slowly, examination under a microscope shows that it is made up of needles and silicon plates, of large dimensions (causing
EMI6.2
the weakening mentioned above), embedded in a matrix which it probably consists of aluminum containing a small amount of silicon which is dissolved therein. The same alloy subjected to rapid solidification exhibits a completely different picture, as seen in the accompanying drawing, which shows the structure of the alloy when the latter has undergone rapid solidification molding.
The relatively large plates and needles of silicon have disappeared, and we see relatively large dendritic crystals, designated

Esssis have shown that in the hands of a very large quantity

It is assumed that this difference in structure pro-

In the form of relatively large plates or needles, silicon does not give alloys
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the best properties of which it is capable.
The present invention is not limited to alloys composed only of aluminum and silicon. According to the present invention, it is also possible to add, for example, metals which are capable of forming solid or crystalline solutions in aluminum.
Thus, it has been observed that in many cases an addition of copper, up to about 5 / and preferably from 3 / to 4 /, exerts an advantageous influence on alloys containing silicon, particularly when the silicon content is 3 / to 6 /, preferably about 5 / and when the moldings are subjected to an appropriate heat treatment, the latter as such not falling within the object of the present invention *
In some cases a higher copper content is desirable.
However, it has been found that a lower copper content and a higher silicon content can be used advantageously. Thus, for example, an alloy containing, approximately 8 / cilioium and 2 / copper, gives a good combination of physical properties and excellent casting qualities, especially for die-casting .. thanks to its fluidity and reduced shrinkage. .
Sometimes the presence of zinc will be beneficial, especially when the castings are subjected to an appropriate heat treatment. Thus, for example, a specimen, molded in a shell and having undergone an appropriate heat treatment, which was constituted by an alloy containing 6 / of silicon, 3 / of copper and 13 / of zinc, had a tensile strength of 44,000 pounds. per square inch and a break elongation of 6 /. With 8 / of silicon, II / - of copper, and 5 / of zinc, the tensile strength, heat treated was 31,000 psi, but the elongation at break was 15 /.
The presence of zinc, but without copper, is generally more suitable in the alloys to which we have
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
added alkali metal, than in simple aluminum-silicon alloys.
It is known that silicon can be brought to a state of fine granulation by other means: such as, for example, the addition of an alkali metal to the alloy, but according to the present invention it has been found that even in these cases it is advantageous to subject the alloy to rapid solidification, since this latter gives an improved combination of physical properties and a finer structure of the organic silicon mixture. aluminum, as compared to the same alloy (containing alkali metal) cast by a relatively slow cooling rate molding process.
This is especially the case for alloys having a relatively high iron content, in which the addition of alkali metal produces only a moderate improvement in the size of the plate or needle particles of the iron rich constituent material. . On the other hand, rapid cooling or solidification produces a much greater effect in this direction.
