<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Improvements to cylinders of internal combustion engines"
The present invention relates to internal combustion engines of the type in which the cylinder block comprises the outer walls of the cylinder water jackets, cylinder heads, valve elbows, valve guides and spaces. cooling water around the heads and elbows, this block being of aluminum, while the cylinders are of steel or other suitable metal and are supported in the aluminum block, while the cooling water is in contact direct with the cylinder bodies.
Heretofore it has been general practice in the construction of engines of the type designated above to make cylinder heads, valve elbows, valve guides and cooling spaces around the heads and elbows in a single cast, and the remaining part of the block being of another
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The inner cylinder bodies are inserted at the end of the head end of the last casting and housed there axially by means of flanges projecting outwardly on the inner cylinder bodies at the ends of the heads thereof , to rest them respectively on annular bosses of the last casting and to hold them in position by the first casting which is subsequently fixed.
Such a construction has drawbacks and in particular it is difficult by this construction to form a watertight seal between the aluminum block and the cylinder inner body at the base of the block (i.e. say at the end of the water jacket away from the head) and in the event of a leak through this seal, it is difficult to prevent water from entering the chamber of the elbow shaft.
It has been proposed to cast the whole aluminum part in one go, to insert the inner cylinder steel bodies through circular holes formed in the base, to fix the head ends of each body. cylinder to the heads formed in the aluminum casting, by means of an external thread on the internal cylinder body engaging threads made in the aluminum part and securing the internal cylinder bodies to the housing of the cylinder. bent shaft by means of an external flange of each of these cylinders which rest on the face of the openings of the crankcase of the bent shaft, and are brought to it by bolts and nuts.
The present invention constitutes an improved construction of the type of engine in which the aluminum block comprises the above-mentioned parts, coming in a single cast, and in which the inner cylinder bodies are inserted through the holes. circulars mentioned above.
The invention consists mainly in the method of fixing the aluminum cylinder block to the crankcase of the elbow shaft, and furthermore of making watertight and gas-tight joints at the ends of the heads and gaskets. watertight at the end

base of the internal bodies, ie cvJ-i'h'e il 1, w '' l 'q \\, vsw vv these latter joints, to prevent any water escaping through the joints from entering into the crankcase of the crankshaft, these points being facilitated by the method (forming the object of the invention) of fixing the aluminum block to the crankshaft housing.
According to the invention, the aluminum cylinder block is fixed to the crankcase of the bent shaft by long bolts screwed into the latter, passing through holes made in the. base of the aluminum cylinder block and passing through the water space of the cylinder liner to and through the upper part of the block, these bolts being secured by nuts on the upper side of this part.
The watertight and gas-tight seal at the end of the heads of each cylinder is formed by means of a flange on each internal cylinder body, at or near the end of the heads of that body, this flange resting on a recess formed on each of the heads constituted by the aluminum cylinder block with the interposition of a suitable washer such as for example a copper and asbestos washer. The construction with the long bolts mentioned, materially leads to the efficiency of these joints. If desired, an external thread can be formed on the head end of each of the cylinder internal bodies on a portion extending below the flange, this thread engaging a corresponding thread made in the heads of the cylinder block. in aluminium.
At the other end each inner cylinder body protrudes some distance into its opening from the elbow shaft housing, and on the outer side of each inner cylinder body is formed an outwardly extending flange which takes seated on the face of the opening in the crankshaft housing. For a small distance above this flange, the wall of the inner cylinder body is thickened outwardly and a suitable arrangement is chosen to form a watertight seal.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
As an example of such an arrangement, one can form an annular recess around the outer face of the thick wall of the inner cylinder body and insert therein a rubber ring which protrudes outwardly at this recess and compress it against. the surrounding wall of the aluminum block. Preferably the base of this recess is generally parallel to the wall, but has a slight swelling in the center, so as to press the rubber ring forward.
In another form an internal flange can be formed on the inside of each of the holes in the base of the aluminum cylinder block (this flange not extending far enough to prevent the first mentioned flange from the head end of the inner cylinder body to pass through this hole), a small jacket being made above the thickened wall of the inner cylinder body, and a ring of rubber or other suitable material forming a gasket water, being inserted between these two flanges, these elements being relative to each other such that when the internal cylinder body is pushed into the a-luminiu cylinder block, the ring is compressed between the two flanges.

In order to prevent the water in the cylinder liner from coming into contact with the bolts mentioned above, these bolts are enclosed in aluminum tubes. Besides that these tubes protect the bouloms -le the effect of water, they can, by the space left between eu.?: And the bolts, be used for the passage of oil from the upper head valve which controls the mechanism to the crankshaft housing.
In the accompanying drawing is shown an example of the invention, the internal cylinder body being made of steel.
