<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"APPARATUS FOR GATHERING THE STONES. SPARSES AT THE
GROUND SURFACE "
In many regions, the soil of the fields is cluttered with stones of all kinds and sizes, which hamper cultivation. Due to the cost of labor, picking by hand is practically impossible; however the stones would find their utility for the maintenance of the paths * and their venta would make it possible to profit some profit.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention proposes to make the collection of stones in the fields quick and inexpensive; it provides for this purpose the use of an animal or mechanical traction device, consisting of one or more scrapers, the teeth of which are arranged in a single line having the shape of a pocket. These rakes are articulated with the axle to a longitudinal cross member of the device, and can be lifted from the ground, either to free the teeth from the stones collected, or to allow the device to be transported on the road.
When this device is used for certain very hard, flat and very stony soils, it is advantageous to place below the tips of the tines, a kind of metal sole forming a pad and capable of sliding on the ground without entering it. This pad is preferably produced by one of the wings of a suitably fixed angle iron. with a rake, and the other wing of which is raised, serves to hold the stones between the teeth.
Embodiments of the invention are shown by way of illustration, in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figs. 1 and 2 eont-3 views respectively in plan and in elevation of a device for driving seated.
Fig, 3 is a perspective view of a device leading to foot.
Fig. 4 is a large-scale view of part of a rake provided with a pad.
Fig, 5 shows the entire apparatus with its raised rakes.
The apparatus shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 com-

According to the invention, a transverse bar 9 is secured to the axle by supports 10 and 11; to this bar, 'are directly articulated at 12 and 13 two kinds of rectilinear rakes 14 and 15, having only one row of teeth and directed obliquely with respect to the axis of advance of the apparatus.
The ends of these Boni rakes attached to arms such as 16 which are themselves articulated to the bar 9.
Behind the ends of these rectilinear and oblique rakes, there is disposed a third rake 17 also comprising only a row of teeth, but having a shape of a half-circumference, of which the

The rake 17 is articulated to the bar 9 by arms 18 and 19, and is ballasted with a weight 20. On the other hand, a cross member 21 is placed on the arms 18 and 19 and extending above the rakes 14 and 15, it prevents them from lifting themselves higher than the rake 17.
The bvras 1a and 10 are attached by a rod 23 to an elbow lever 24 placed within reach of the driver supposedly seated on the seat 25 fixed to the axle.
Finally, for road transport, the rakes can be kept raised by chains such as 26 attached to the rear end of the stretchers.
In the example shown in FIG. 3, the axle 30 provided with its two wheels 31 and 32 is completed by a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
front end 33 with coupling hook 34.
The rake 35 is now established in one piece, articulated to supports 36 and 37, attached to the axle.
Two sleeves 38 ending in handles are provided at the rear part of the rake, to allow it to be lifted at will.
Finally, on the front end 33 and arranged a support bar 39 on which the rake is likely to come to rest when it is folded down for road transport.
In FIGS. 4 and 5, showing the variant envisaged above, one recognizes at 43 the mounting of any of the rakes of the apparatus. This frame is furnished with substantially vertical teeth 44. Below the tip of the teeth 44 is placed a sort of metal shoe 45 fixed to the frame 43 by uprights 46 threaded at 47 at their upper part and capable of being adapted by nuts 48. exactly in place of one of the teeth that have been removed beforehand for this purpose.
The sole 45 is preferably formed by one of the wings of an angle iron, the other wing 49 of which is raised vertically and serves to retain the stones between the teeth. Other bands such as 50 can be provided and attached to the uprights 46 to increase the efficiency of the wing 49.
Thanks to the modification thus described, the tips of the tines can no longer rest on the ground and the apparatus is transformed into a kind of sled or hurdle which slides without being pulled out. /
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The removal of the latter device is as quick as its installation, it suffices to unscrew the bolts 48 and replace the uprights 46 with the teeth previously removed; the device is then ready to. operate,
Regardless of the type of appliance used, the method of use and operation are the same: the rakes are left to rest on the ground ot in the forward movement of the appliance. Encountered stones slide from tooth to tooth and gather at the back of the appliance.
When the number is judged sufficient, the rake which retains the stones is lifted, either by means of the lever 24 (fig.1 and 2), or by means of the handles 38 (fig. 3).
The stones remain in a pile and it is then easy to remove them with a shovel.
We see how important the saving of time is, and how low the costs are to undergo to stone a field,
The invention is obviously not limited to the examples described which may undergo all the modifications of construction which practice will suggest; it is thus that the horizontal flange 49 of the angle iron can be lined from below with a pad intended to protect it against wear.
