<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
#het gebruik van een brandwerende meubelstof waarbij het brandvertragend effect bekomen wordt door het aanbrengen van een brandwerende coating aan de rugzijde van de meubelstof. Veel gebruikte coatings zijn opgeschuimde acrylaten waaraan belangrijke hoeveelheden brandvertragende additieven toegevoegd zijn.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
#het gebruik van een brandwerende meubelstof waarbij brandvertragende textielvezels gebruikt worden.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

CHENILLE YARN AND FABRIC Object of the Invention The object of the invention is a chenille yarn and fabric. These are provided with so-called 'pool', i. e. upright fibers that give the fabric a velvety appearance. The invention relates to a specific type of pile yarn for the manufacture of such a fabric, and to the fabric itself.
State of the art Furniture fabrics are woven or knitted textile fabrics that are used to upholster seating or reclining furniture. A distinction can be made between velvet fabrics and flat upholstery fabrics.
Velvet fabrics are produced on rod ropes, double piece looms or via alternative processes such as flock. Flat fabrics, however, are realized with traditional looms.
Most flat upholstery fabrics have limited wear resistance compared to velvet fabrics. The wear resistance of furniture upholstery is usually tested according to the EN 14465 or BS2543 standard and is expressed in "martindale" speed.
Chenille upholstery fabrics are flat upholstery fabrics where chenille yarns are used as weft yarns. A chenille yarn consists of one
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
core yarn consisting of at least two yarns twisted around each other and between which the chenille pile, i.e. a short pile yarn, is clamped. This chenille pole is obtained by winding a yarn around a flat double caliber between which a circular knife rotates. The yarn is pushed onto the rotating knife by driving wheels to the left and right of the caliber so that a pile layer is created on both sides of the caliber. To the left and right of the pile layer a core wire is entrained which is twisted as soon as the pile is cut. Twisting the core wires anchors the pole and thus the chenille wire is formed.
Commonly used textile fibers in the chenille pile of chenille yarns consist of acrylic, viscose, cotton, polyester or polypropylene. These chenille yarns are therefore pile yarns that give a pile fabric a pile character. The use of chenille yarns in the flat fabrics generally has a positive effect on the wear resistance.
For obtaining furniture fabrics with a glossy aspect, chenille yarns are generally used whose pile consists of acrylic or viscose.
With regard to flammability, a distinction must be made between ordinary dry-spun acrylic, a copolymer consisting of at least 85% acrylonitrile, and modacryl containing between 85 and 35% acrylonitrile. Modacryl also contains a substantial amount of halogen-containing compounds.
The addition of an antimony compound to modacrylic can further improve the fire resistance of modacrylic.
However, chenille yarns with a pile of normal acrylic have poor fire resistance (no fire-retardant effect). The LOI index, a measure of the fire resistance of materials, is situated for the ordinary acrylic fiber
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
18 and 20, for modacrylic between 25 and 30 and the modacrylic with antimony has a LOI value that is situated between 28 and 36. PVC fibers have an even higher LOI value, namely 35-40. However, PVC yarns are difficult to dye and intertwine.
Textile materials with a sufficient amount of modacrylic in combination with a certain amount of cellulose fiber (cotton or viscose) have good fire-resistant properties and meet current fire standards. On the other hand, they have a low abrasion resistance and, in addition, have a matte and lean aspect compared to dry-spun acrylic.
Furniture fabrics for residential use must meet specific requirements regarding the fire behavior of seating furniture for certain markets, mainly the British market (the British standard BS 5852 part 1; ignition source 0 & 1 - cigarette & match), the furniture fabric always in combination tested with a foam. A sufficient fire resistance (fire-retardant character) can be achieved, among other things, by: # the use of a non-fire-resistant furniture fabric combined with a fire-resistant interliner; interliner may or may not be laminated with furniture upholstery. Such a substance must contain at least 75% natural raw materials or viscose.
#the use of a fire-resistant furniture fabric where the fire-retardant effect is achieved by applying a fire-resistant coating on the back of the furniture fabric. Commonly used coatings are foamed acrylates to which significant quantities of fire-retardant additives have been added.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
#the use of a fire-resistant furniture fabric in which fire-retardant textile fibers are used.
Option 1 is clearly more expensive than the other options due to the use of a tissue and an interliner.
Moreover, the requirement regarding. composition means that many furniture fabric constructions cannot be applied. The result is that this solution is rare in practice.
Option 2 has the disadvantage that the furniture fabric loses its flexibility and the associated comfort aspect to a significant extent due to the application of the FR coating layer.
Option 3 is only possible by using specific specific fibers such as modacrylic or PVC. These fire-retardant fibers, however, have only a limited wear resistance and give the furniture fabric a matt effect.
Furniture fabrics for public use must meet other, stricter standards. In Great Britain the BS5852 Part 2 applies for this. This is a standard that is also widely used in other countries. In order to meet this standard, many fabrics are often coated with fire-resistant latex. However, the standard is so strict that many substances cannot be treated or that the treatment does not guarantee that the standard is repeatedly met. Since high demands are made on these substances with regard to abrasion resistance, the use of 100% modacrylic as pile yarn (both in chenille and pile fabric) is subject to many limitations and is not optimal.
Patent US6107218A relates to a chenille yarn and a method to produce such chenille yarn. This chenille yarn is equipped with a core yarn consisting of at least two components,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
namely a low melting and a high melting core yarn. During the production process, the low-melting core yarn is melted and in this way anchors the chenille pile in the yarn. Such a solution has the advantage that the pile is anchored better, but does not make the pile yarn itself stronger. Moreover, this requires the use of an expensive melting yarn.
Purpose of the Invention The purpose of the invention is to produce a pile fabric that meets specific standards regarding fire behavior, wear resistance and that also has a lively and full aspect.
Description of the invention The invention relates to a chenille yarn and fabric as described in the appended claims.
The present invention thus relates in the first instance to a chenille yarn, the pile of which consists of an intimate blend of two or more types of fibers, at least one type of fiber having fire-resistant properties. It is preferably a mixture of two types of fiber, one of which does and the other does not have the fire-resistant properties. Such a chenille pile (this is the short pile yarn that gets stuck between the core threads when making the chenille yarn) is obtained by mixing the two components when spinning the fibers before opening, this is the first phase of the spinning process whereby the fibers from different bales are brought together and wherein the more compact stacking of the fibers is made lighter.
A second possibility is to mix the various components during the processing of the fiber wicks on the rack benches. This is a
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
operation in which the fibers are stretched, intimately mixed and the fiber slivers are brought to an appropriate thickness for spinning.
In the preferred embodiment, the pile of the chenille wire consists of an intimate blend of fibers of acrylic as a non-fire-resistant material and fibers of modacrylic as a fire-resistant material, the proportion of modacrylic fibers in the pile being between 50% and 85% . If the proportion of modacrylic is less than 50%, the fire-resistant capacity of the pile yarn is insufficient. With a modacrylic portion of more than 85%, the wear resistance is insufficient and the fabric acquires an insufficiently vivid aspect. The core wires that clamp the chenille pole can be 100% fire-resistant, non-fire-resistant or a mixture of both in any ratio.
The core yarns preferably consist of non-fire retardant material in order to optimally construct the end product from a price-economic point of view and since they are nevertheless protected by the pile yarn pile around the core wires.
It was found that a furniture fabric made with this yarn still meets the BS5852 standard, and also exhibits good abrasion resistance and a lively aspect. Moreover, the mixing of acrylic and modacrylic fiber in the pile yarn allows the cost of this fabric to be reduced.
The method of manufacturing the chenille yarn according to the invention does not differ from the known production methods. It is sufficient to use one of these methods using the above-mentioned mix of preferably modacrylic and acrylic fibers.
A second embodiment of the invention consists of a so-called "pile fabric", which is not made from chenille yarn, but via a technique whereby loops of yarns are formed during weaving, which
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
loops are then cut, with the result that upright fibers appear, which also form a 'pole', or whereby the loops are not cut and thus a rib weave is formed. The pile or loop yarn is herein formed by a yarn consisting of a mixture of fire-resistant and non-fire-resistant fibers. Such a yarn is obtained by mixing the two components upon opening of the fibers before spinning, this is the first phase of the spinning process in which the fibers from different bales are brought together and whereby the more compact stacking of the fibers is made lighter .
A second possibility is to mix the various components during processing of the fiber slivers on the stretch benches, this is an operation whereby the fibers are stretched, intimately mixed and the fiber slivers are brought to a suitable thickness for spinning. In the preferred embodiment use is made of an intimate blend of fibers from acrylic as a non-fire-resistant material and fibers from modacrylic as a fire-resistant material, the proportion of modacrylic fibers in the pile being between 50% and 85%. If the proportion of modacrylic is less than 50%, the fire-resistant capacity of the pile yarn is insufficient. With a modacrylic content of more than 85%, the wear resistance is insufficient and the fabric acquires an insufficiently vivid aspect.
Detailed description of a specific application of the invention The Godiva article from Escolys Textiles is woven on a polyester chain (PES ring spun Ne 20/2 with 37 threads per cm) and uses 700 wefts of acrylchenille (Nm 4. 85) per meters, 700 wefts of open end spun cotton (Ne 6A / 1) per meter and 700 wefts of polyester continuous filament (2 * 167dtex) per meter.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
In order to make the article fireproof in accordance with BS5852 Part 1. the substance must be treated with a fire-retardant latex.
However, if the chenille is replaced by a chenille wire whose pile consists of an intimate blend of acrylic and modacrylic in a ratio of 1 / 3rd, 2 / 3rd with an Nm 3.75 and half of the open-end spun cotton by a wire from Modacryl Nm 10/1 then we obtain a fabric that has a sufficiently high abrasion, is fire-retardant in accordance with the BS5852 Part 1; Includes Ignition sources 0 & 1 (cigarette and match) and a lively and attractive aspect.
Comparative tests were performed on furniture fabric of the Godiva quality, with respect to the standard BS2543 standard for abrasion resistance of woven fabrics. According to this standard, the fabric must withstand at least 20000 cycles of "Martindale". The substance with a chenille pool of 100% modacrylic gave way after 16000 cycles. This with a chenille pole consisting of a mixture of modacrylic and acrylic, according to the invention, withstood the required 20000 cycles.
The fire resistance of the Godiva variant was also measured with respect to the standard BS5852; part 1, ignition source 0 and 1.
Source 0 refers to burning via a cigarette. For each Godiva variety tested with an acrylic / modacrylic mixture according to the invention in the pool, the following results were obtained: Source 0 (cigarette): damage limited to scorching at the place where the cigarette was placed. The cigarette went out after + -21 minutes. There was no progressive ignition or smoldering of the substance.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
Source 1 (Butane gas flowing at 45 ml / min at 25 C): burning stopped 1 second after the burner was switched off.
No progressive smoldering established.
Conclusion: the furniture fabric made with a chenille pile according to the invention does indeed meet the requirements for fire resistance, this despite the lower modacrylic content. Since the standard requires that m. B.t. Source 1 burning stops within 120 seconds, a very reliable result is achieved with the 1 second after-burning time.
With regard to Source 0, an afterburning time of one hour applies according to the standard. Here too, people are well within the norm.
