<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Method and device for fumigating bulk material.
This invention relates to a method for the gasification or treatment with gas of bulk material, in particular foodstuffs, in a space in which a solid substance which releases an active gas under external influences is introduced into the bulk material.
The fumigation of bulk material is used for, among other things, killing insects in grain or other crops stored in a silo or container, or stored for transport in a ship's hold.
The solid may release active gas, for example, by sublimation at ambient temperature, by contact with air humidity, or by reaction with another chemical.
As a solid releasing an active gas, for example an insecticidal gas, phosphine gas is often used which is purchased in the form of tablets or powder in a gas-permeable bag, air-tightly packed.
The airtight container is opened or removed before use. Under the influence of the ambient temperature, the phosphine gas will sublimate.
It is classic to place the active gas in solid form on top of the bulk material. However, it takes a long time for the gas, the density of which is slightly greater than that of air, to diffuse through the bulk material. Usually for that
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
fans or the like, which is expensive and not always applicable. In addition, the gas does not always go where it is most efficient.
In some cases the solid matter is pushed into the bulk material, but this is only possible with most bulk goods to a limited depth, for example maximum 1 m, which is rarely the most efficient depth. In addition, it is difficult to remove the solid quickly if the fumigation must suddenly be stopped for some reason.
The invention has for its object to provide a method for fumigating bulk material that does not have the aforementioned disadvantages and allows the gases to be brought to a depth in the bulk material where the action of the gases is most efficient and this without fans, and which permits fumigation at interrupt quickly.
This object is achieved according to the invention in that the bulk material is arranged around an outer tube extending from top to bottom which is gas-permeable at least over a length in its wall and in this outer tube a smaller inner tube in which the solid substance was arranged, and which also has a wall that is at least partially gas-permeable, is lowered to the desired height.
The inner sleeve is preferably closed at the top by a cover which preferably also closes the outer sleeve.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The inner sleeve can be lowered into the outer sleeve by means of a cable, a rope, chain or the like.
The invention also relates to a device which is particularly suitable for applying the method according to one of the previous embodiments.
The invention thus relates to a device for gassing bulk solids, in particular foodstuffs, into a space, with the aid of a solid, which releases an active gas under external influences, the characteristic of which is that it comprises an outer sleeve , the wall of which is gas-permeable at least over a part of its length and a second smaller inner sleeve, the wall of which is also at least partially gas-permeable and movable in the outer sleeve and comprising means for inserting this inner sleeve to the desired depth into the outer to lower.
The outer sleeve can be arranged permanently in the space, in particular a closed space.
The walls of the tubes can be gas permeable because they are perforated tubes or pipes.
Preferably, the inner sleeve is closed at the bottom and closed at the top by a cover.
At the top of the inner sleeve, the outer sleeve is also preferably closed around it, for example by the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
lid that closes the inner tube on top.
The outer sleeve can be provided with a closing lid at the top.
The inner sleeve can be suspended from a cable, a rope, a chain or the like.
With the insight to better demonstrate the characteristics of the invention, a preferred embodiment of a method and apparatus for gasifying bulk material according to the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 schematically represents a cross-section of a silo with bulk material, in which a fumigation device was fitted; figure 2 represents the part indicated by F2 in figure 1 on a larger scale; figure 3 represents on a larger scale the part which is indicated by F3 in figure 1.
Figure 1 shows a silo 1, filled with bulk material 2, in which a device for gassing this bulk material 2 is arranged.
This device consists essentially of an outer upright tube 3, an inner tube 4 which hangs on a cable 5 in the tube 3 and in which pellets 6 of phosphine gas are arranged in solid form which, under the influence of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
temperature, sublimates and releases insecticidal phosphine gas.
This outer sleeve 3 has a wall which is gas permeable over its entire length. In fact, the wall is a perforated round pipe, the perforations being of course small enough to prevent the penetration of bulk material into the tube 3.
The outer sleeve 3 is open or closed at the bottom, but closed at the top by a closing cover 7 to prevent the ingress of bulk material or dirt. The cable 5 is fixed to this cover, from which the inner tube 4 hangs.
The inner tube 4 also has a wall which is gas-permeable and this wall too is formed by a perforated pipe, the perforations of which are sufficiently small to not let through bulk material. Its diameter is slightly smaller than that of the outer tube 3, so that play is present and gas can flow from the inner tube 4 into the outer tube 3.
The inner tube 4 is closed at the bottom and closed at the top by a cover 8. However, this cover 8 is larger than the end of the tube 4, so that it also closes the outer tube 3, so that gas flowing out of the inner tube 4 does not pass the cover 8 can take off in the outer sleeve 3.
The pellets 6 can go directly into the inner tube 4
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
are arranged or are first inserted into a gas-permeable sleeve 9.
The cover 8 is attached to the inner sleeve 4, for example with screws or the like, and the cable 5 is attached to this cover 5.
The bulk material 2 is arranged around the outer tube 3 that was previously placed in the silo 1 or is permanently arranged therein.
To gasify the bulk material 2, the pellets 6 or the stocking 9 with pellets 6 are removed from the airtight package and placed in the inner tube 4. The cover 8 is attached to it and the sleeve 4 is lowered, with the help of the cable 5, to the desired depth in the outer sleeve 3, the closing cover 7 being placed on this latter sleeve 3. The free length of the cable 5 under this cover 7 was adjusted to the desired depth.
Under the influence of the ambient temperature, the pellets 6 sublimate and phosphine gas is released which flows through the sleeve 9 and the inner sleeve 4 into the outer sleeve 3.
Hence the phosphine gas divides itself through the wall of this tube 3 into the bulk material 2. Because the phosphine gas is lighter than air, it will rise through this bulk material 2. Figures 1 and 3 show the gas flow by arrows.
After gassing, the inner tube 4 is removed from the outer tube 3 by means of the cable 5, so that it
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
can be used again for a fumigation later.
Even if for some reason the gassing must be stopped, this can be done by removing the inner tube 4 from the outer tube 3.
The pellets 6 need not necessarily be phosphine gas.
It can be any solid substance that, under the influence of external factors, is converted into an active gas that can be used for the gasification of bulk materials, in particular food products. The solid does not necessarily have to be in the form of pellets.
The inner tube 3 does not necessarily have to hang on a cable 5. It can also be attached to a rope, chain or the like, or even to a rod. The cable 5 or the like also does not necessarily have to be attached to the closing cover 7, while the attachment to the inner tube 4 does not necessarily have to be done via the cover 8.
The space does not necessarily have to be a silo 1. For example, it can also be a container or a ship's hold. The space does not always have to be a closed space.
The invention is in no way limited to the embodiment described above and shown in the accompanying figures, but such a method and device for gassing bulk materials can be realized in various variants without departing from the scope of the invention.
