<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"PORTABLE SPREADER" When maintaining lawns, the amateur gardener encounters problems during the manual spreading of fertilizers or plant protection products. Indeed, this manual work does not allow to spread the fertilizer regularly and to obtain a uniform growth of the grass.
Until now, only rotary spreaders mounted on wheels are known. The rotation of these wheels ensures the spreader works, but the spreading width is reduced and it is impossible to follow the irregular contours of a lawn.
The present invention relates to a portable spreader accepting a standard packaging of fertilizers, provided with an electric motor, powered by battery and actuating a circular spreading device, rotating about a vertical axis, distributing by centrifugal force the flowable product. of the standard packaging passing successively through the openings of a removable plate, adapted to the specific particle size of the product and through the openings of a valve closing or opening the flow.
The spreading width can reach 3 meters and the regularity of spreading is ensured by the dimensions and the shape of the cutouts of the removable plate. These cuts are three in number and have three passages of distinct shapes, each ensuring the supply of part of the spreading area: right, center and left.
The removable plate is adapted to the grain size of the product contained in the packaging and is delivered with it. The speed of rotation of the electric motor and the spreader plate can be adjusted according to the desired spreading width. however, it is possible to supply an assortment of inserts separately, suitable for a range of products.

The present invention can be more easily understood thanks to the description which is given below and referring to the appended drawings which respectively represent: FIG. 1: a sectional view of the entire spreading device; fig. 2: a view of the removable flow adjustment plate; fig. 3: a view of the bottom of the funnel; fig. 4: a view of the rotary valve controlling the opening of the product passage; and fig. 5:
a view of the upper face of the rotary spreader disc.
The portable spreader is made up of a funnel (2) on which the inverted packaging (1) containing the product to be spread fits. The dimensions of the packaging (1) are standardized and it fits without play in the funnel (2) forming the upper part of the spreader.
The funnel (2) is conical in shape and ends downwards by a circular surface (3) having cutouts (4) for the passage of the product to be spread.
The packaging (1) contains, in addition to the product, a distribution plate (5), having three openings (6), specifically adapted to the grain size of the product. When opening the packaging (1), the plate (5) is removed and is placed in a determined position in the bottom of the funnel (2) where it rests on the surface (3).
This circular surface (3) carries in its center a vertical axis (6) extending downward and on which are mounted a horizontal disc forming a rotary valve (7) and a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
rotary spreader disc (8). The rotary valve (7) is manually controlled by operating the lever (9) and makes it possible to control the passage of the product towards the spreading disc (8). The valve (7) has two positions, closed or open, and activates by means of a cam (10) a switch (not shown), which controls the electric motor (13). The spreader disc (8) is arranged under the valve (7) and rotates around the vertical axis (6) being driven by the electric motor (13).
This disc (8) has on its upper face four vertical strips (14), extending radially and dividing the surface of the disc (8) into four parts.
The spreader disc (8) carries on its lower surface a circular cylindrical edge (15) extending vertically and intended to come into contact with a roller (16), fixed on the axis of the electric motor (13). The rear wall (17) of the spreader is integral with the funnel (2) and extends downward. It carries the electric motor (13), the speed of which is adjustable and the battery (18). The electric motor (13) is small in size and carries on its axis a cylindrical caster (16) made of elastic material, which bears on the circular edge (15) of the disc (8).
Referring to Figure 2, the removable plate (5) has on its circumference a notch (19), which is positioned on a cam (20) fixed on the bottom of the funnel. This configuration ensures the fixing of the plate 5 in a well-defined position. The cutouts provided in the plate allow regular spreading in front of the user and on the sides of the user.
The first stages of use consist in opening the packaging (1), removing the plate (5) from the packaging (1) and placing it on the bottom of the funnel, the notch (19) being placed on the cam (20). The spreader is turned over on the packaging (1), which is stuck in the funnel (2). The spreader is then straightened and the user can hang it around his neck by means of straps (not shown), the adjustment of which makes it possible to adjust the height of the device relative to the ground.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
During operation, the user actuates the valve (7) using a lever (9). The rotation of the valve (7) allows the passage of the product and controls the switch on which the actuation of the electric motor (13) depends.
The product falls on the spreading disc (8) and is spread regularly over a constant width.
When spreading a product of another type with a different grain size, the removable plate specific to the product and present in the packaging of this product should be used. The combined use of a product-specific plate and a rotary spreader disc at constant speed allows uniform spreading of the product as well as regular growth of the lawn.
According to a variant of the invention, no removable plate is used. On the other hand, the product flow opening on the top of the packaging has cutouts adapted to the grain size of the product. The packaging is therefore secured to the wafer and the latter comes into place in the spreader with the packaging.
The packaging is provided with a conventional closure system.
