<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
tolyltriazoles.

Detergent compositions, without phosphates or silicates, for washing.
The invention relates to aqueous washing compositions, without phosphates or silicates, which contain an alkaline substance and a combination of a polycarboxylate and a phosphonate.
It is desirable to avoid washing compositions containing phosphates and / or silicates. It is well known that phosphates are environmentally undesirable and, in fact, in some countries they are no longer allowed. Silicates have the drawback of tending to form deposits in the particular or household washing machines in which they are used.
According to the invention, the latter provides an aqueous washing composition, free of phosphates and silicates, comprising: (i) 5 to 45% of an alkaline substance, (ii) 0.5 to 20% of a polycarboxylate , and (iii) 0.1 to 10% phosphonate, the remainder comprising water.
When preparing compositions according to the invention, the polycarboxylate and / or the phosphonate can be formed on site by addition of the corresponding free acid which, in contact with the alkaline substance, forms the salt, or else by addition of the form salt in itself.
All the percentages given in the compositions according to the invention are by weight of the active compound or of the active material and these percentages relate to the total composition.
In addition, compositions according to the invention can contain other additives, for example other sequestering agents and / or corrosion inhibitors.
Preferably, in the compositions according to the invention, the ratio between the polycarboxylate and the phosphonate ranges from 1: 1 to 30: 1, better still from 1.5: 1 to 12: 1.
Compositions according to the invention can be used as donors of alkaline substances in industrial washing processes. Preferably, such a composition according to the invention comprises:
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
(i) 15 to 35%, better 18 to 30 of substance, alkaline-, (ii) 3 to 10%, better 4 to 7% of polycarboxylate, and (iii) 0.2 to 1.5%, even better 0 , 5 to 1.2% of phosphonate, the remainder consisting of water and one or more compounds chosen from sequestering agents and corrosion inhibitors.
The compositions according to the invention can also be used as washing liquids intended to be used in a dishwashing machine. Such compositions must be free from any chlorine-containing compounds. Preferably, such a composition according to the invention comprises: (i) 10 to 35%, better still 13 to 20%, of alkaline substance, (ii) 0.5 to 15%, better still 0.5 to 10.5% of polycarboxylate , and (iii) 0.2 to 5%, better still 0.4 to 3% of phosphonate, the remainder comprising water.
The pH of these compositions is preferably greater than 10.
The alkaline substances which are preferably used in the aqueous compositions according to the invention are hydroxides or carbonates of alkali metals, better still hydroxides or carbonates of sodium or potassium. The alkaline substance can be used in solid form or in the form of a very highly concentrated aqueous solution.
Preferably, in a composition according to the invention, the polycarboxylate is a compound which preferably comes from polymers with medium to high molecular weight (preferably having a molecular weight of 800 to 300,000, better still from 1,000 to 250,000, particular from 4,000 to 120,000), even better, it comes from one of the following acids: methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, α-hydroxyacrylic acid, maleic acid or their copolymers.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Such polycarboxylic acids are in aqueous solution. Preferably, the polycarboxylic acid is in the form of an alkali metal salt, preferably in the form of the sodium or potassium salts. Preferably, the polymer is a polyacrylate type polymer.
Preferred phosphonates are those from a hydroxyalkylene (C 1 -C 4) phosphonic acid or an aminomethylene phosphonic acid or a phosphonic acid (C 1 -C 4 alkylene) carboxylic acid. Better still, phosphonic acid is an acid derived from: l-hydroxyethane-l, l-diphosphonic acid (HEDP), aminotri acid (methylene phosphonic) (ATMP), ethylenediamine tetra acid (methylene phosphonic) ( EDTMP), diethylenetriamine penta acid (methylene phosphonic) (DETPMP), hexamethylenediamine tetra acid (methylene phosphonic), acid (amine oxide) tri (methylene phosphonic), and 2-phosphonobutane-1 acid , 2,4-tricarboxylic (PBTC).
Preferably, the compositions according to the invention contain one or more sequestering agents, chosen from salts of nitrilotriacetic acid and citric acid. Preferably, the amount of the sequestering agent that is used is 3 to 20%, based on the weight of the composition. Preferred solid forms are those from alkali metals, for example sodium and potassium.
When a composition according to the invention is to be used as a liquid for a dishwashing machine (and therefore as a composition which does not contain compounds containing chlorine), the composition optionally includes one or more inhibitors of corrosion. Preferred corrosion inhibitors are selected from sodium nitrite, benzotriazoles and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tolyltriazoles. Preferably, when a corrosion inhibitor is present, it is preferably present in an amount selected from 0.5 to 1% sodium nitrite and 0.2 to 0.4% benzotriazole or tolyltriazole.
When used as liquid for dishwashing machines, the compositions according to the invention (i.e. compositions without a chlorine-containing compound) have extremely good washing and cleaning properties and, also, they do not have the aforementioned drawbacks associated with washing liquids containing phosphate and silicate.
When used as donors of alkaline substance in industrial washing liquids, the compositions according to the invention produce stable, strongly alkaline concentrates which, by the addition of anionic or nonionic surfactants, form useful liquids for industrial washes. .
The invention will now be illustrated by the following examples, in which all the amounts are given as a percentage of the weight of the composition.
Polyacrylic acid A has a molecular weight of 100,000, and it serves as a 29% solution of half-neutralized acid - (as the sodium salt), polyacrylic acid B has a molecular weight of 4,500 and it serves as a 49% solution, the sodium salt of nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) serves as a 40% solution, diethylenetriamine penta acid (methylene phosphonic) (DETPMP) serves as 50% solution, and 1-hydroxyethane-1, 1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) serves as a 60% solution, all solutions being aqueous.
