<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF (+) - 13-NORFARANAL".
The present invention relates to a new process for the preparation of (+) - 13-norfaranal, which is the tracer pheromone of Pharaoh's ant.
The Pharaoh's ant is the most difficult to control harmful insects installed in the environment of men. The Pharaoh's ant hides its nest in the walls of the apartments and there, the queens that ensure the conservation of the breed, rapid propagation and reproduction, can hardly be reached by conventional insecticides.
In recent times, compounds having a juvenile hormone effect have been used successfully in the control of Pharaoh's ant (eg methoprene). Pharaoh's ants carry food treated with methoprene in their anthill and that anthill inhibits the laying of queens.
Pharaoh's ant walks 20 to 25 meters long to search for food and
EMI1.1
ants mark these routes with a specific attractive material - the pheromone called Rtraceusew- which is characteristic of this species. The (+) - faranal is the most active component of this tracer pheromone of the Pharaoh's ant and this compound encourages wood ants to leave the anthill and follow the trace at a concentration of only 1 pg / cm. This compound can be used effectively to control Pharaoh's ant when paired with juvenoldes.
EMI1.2
According to Hoyama et al. * Naturwissenschaften 70, 469 (198317, the (+) - 13-norfaranal having a simpler structure than the (+) - faranal, exerts a very strong tracing effect on the worker ants of Pharaoh and this effect is almost as high as that (+) - faranal, so (+) - 13-norfaranal can also be used to control the ant when combined with juvenoldes.
The (+) - 13-norfaranal has not yet been prepared

in pure form so far. Only one synthesis is described in the prior art [T. Koyama, M. Matsubara, K. Ogura, IEM Brüggemann, A. Vrielink: Naturwissenschaften 70,469 (1983)], which results in the formation of a 40: 60 mixture of (+) - 13-norfaranal and its diastereomer having a configuration (3R, 4R). Geraniol is used as starting material, phosphorylation is carried out, then the geranyl phosphate thus obtained is coupled with (Z) -3-methyl-3-pentenyl-pyrophosphate using a purified enzyme system synthetase extracted from pork liver.
This reaction gives in a low yield the pyrophosphate of (4R) - (2E, 6E) -3, 4, 7, ll-tetramethyl-2, 6, 10-dodecatrien- l-ol, the product thus obtained is hydrolysed with a phosphatase enzyme system and the (4R) - (2E, 6e) -3,4,7,11-tetramethyl-2,6-10-dodecatrien-1-ol is oxidized with active manganese oxide.
The (4R) - (2E, 6E) -3,4,7,11-tetramethyl- 2, 6, 10-dodêeatrienal thus obtained is reduced with a system of tetrakis- (triphenylphosphite) palladium and tributyltin hydride in a 40:60 mixture of (3S, 4R) - (E) -3,4,7,11-tetramethyl-6,10-dodecadienal and of (3R, 4R) - (E) -3,4,7, 11-tetramethyl-6,10-dodecadienal; these two components are not separated
The object of the present invention is to overcome the drawbacks of the known method and to provide a process which is easy to carry out for the preparation of (+) - 13-norfaranal.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided

The compound of general formula (VII) is isolated and converted into a compound of general formula (VIII) by methods known in themselves (where X and R2 are as defined above). It is preferable to proceed using mesyl chloride and to prepare a mesylate of general formula (VIII) (where R2 is as defined above, preferably a metyhoxymethyl group and X is a mesyloxy group). The compound thus obtained is reduced with a metal hydride (preferably lithium t6trahydrido aluminate) in an anhydrous aprotic solvent (preferably anhydrous tetrahydrofuran) to provide a compound of general formula (IX) (where R2 is as defined above ).
The compound of general formula (IX) is isolated, after which the protective group is removed by aid catalyzed hydrolysis - preferably with 0.1 to 0.01M methanolic hydrochloric acid. The compound of general formula (X) thus obtained is isolated and oxidized with a known oxidizing agent (preferably pyridinium dichromate). The desired compound of formula (I), C le (+) - 13-norfaranal] is isolated from the reaction mixture with an isomer purity of 94-95%.
