<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
EMI5.1
<tb>
<tb> SiO2 <SEP> : <SEP> 71,6 <SEP> % <SEP> Na2O <SEP> : <SEP> 14 <SEP> %
<tb> Al2O3 <SEP> : <SEP> 1 <SEP> % <SEP> MgO <SEP> : <SEP> 4 <SEP> %
<tb> CaO <SEP> : <SEP> 9 <SEP> % <SEP> K2O <SEP> : <SEP> 0,4 <SEP> %.
<tb>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Enfin, la composition des billes peut aisément etre adaptee, au moment de leur fabrication, pour tenir compte de diverses conditions, telles que : - aptitude au ramolLissement et ä la fusion sans prechauffage ; - aptitude ä mouiller une surface chaude, telle qu'une peau d'acier ä une temperature de l'ordre de 1200 C; - viscosité suffisamment basse pour assurer un bon effet Lubrifiant ;

Process of continuous casting of a molten metal.
The present invention relates to a process for the continuous casting of a molten metal, particularly but not exclusively of steel.
Continuous casting is a casting method, known for a long time, which consists in casting a molten metal, without interruption in a bottomless ingot mold. The walls of La Lingotière are energetically cooled; this results in rapid cooling of the flowing metal and the formation of a solidified skin whose thickness increases as the metal progresses in the mold. On leaving the latter, the partially solidified ingot crosses a zone, known as secondary cooling, where it continues and completes its solidification. To facilitate the progress of the ingot, the ingot mold is generally animated by a vibration movement along the direction of its longitudinal axis.
The surface solidification of the metal in La Lingotiere leads to the presence of two different metal surfaces, being at different temperatures and animated relative to each other in a discontinuous movement. The contact area of these surfaces is the seat of serious friction problems.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
To promote the progress of the metal in the ingot mold, it is common practice to lubricate it with a powder, at a relatively low melting point, which is deposited on the upper surface of the metal cast in La Ingot mold. Under the effect of the high temperature of the molten metal, the powder containing a lubricant agent melts and flows between the wall of de La Lingotière and the metal solidifying. However, it may happen that the melted powder completely or partially loses its properties, and in particular its fluidity before reaching the lower part of the mold. This may be due, for example, to the entrainment of solid particles from the cast metal.
These solid particles are generally refractory, such as inclusions of alumina, and have the effect of raising the melting point of the powder; It freezes irregularly and the lubrication of the Lingotiere loses its hydrodynamic character.
In addition, in the lower zone of the ingot mold, the cast metal has a relatively thick solidified skin, which is at a temperature below that of the molten metal. The inner wall of the mold only undergoes reduced heating and, due to its vigorous cooling, its temperature remains below the melting point of the powder. This inner wall is thus covered with a layer of solidified powder which forms at the expense of the film of lubricating agent and which consequently reduces its effectiveness.
This effect is further aggravated by the fact that, in the zone under consideration of La Lingotiere, the partially solidified metal undergoes a contraction which causes the rupture of the contact between the solidified skin and the wall of the Lingotiere. There is established between them an insulating air layer, which impedes the transmission of heat from the molten metal to the wall of La Lingotiere and consequently promotes the freezing of the powder.
Under these conditions, the lubrication of the lower part of a continuous casting ingot mold is generally not ensured in a satisfactory manner. This results in a serious drawback with regard to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
concerns the quality of the cast product, the surface of which may have various defects such as shrinkage cracks or solidification marks.
By patent BE-A-899. 544, it has already been proposed a method for lubricating a continuous casting ingot mold by introducing a lubricating agent through a hole orifice through the wall of the ingot mold.
This patent describes a lubricating agent which is preferably in the form of a bar. The implementation of this method has however proved to be difficult, due to the difficulty of reatising satisfactory lubricant bars and of ensuring a continuous supply of the lubricant in this form. In addition, the process requires preheating the lubricant, which complicates the installation and increases the cost of the operation.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method of the type which is mentioned in the introduction, but which does not have the disadvantages of implementation which have just been indicated. In particular, the method of the invention poses no problem for ensuring a continuous supply of the lubricant, and iL does not require preheating thereof.
In accordance with the present invention, a process for the continuous casting of a molten metal, in which a lubricant is introduced into the ingot mold, through at least one passage orifice provided in the wall of said ingot mold, is characterized in that L A lubricant is used in the form of substantially spherical beads, the diameter of which is not more than 1.5 mm.
It indeed appeared, during the tests, that a diameter of 1.5 mm constituted a reasonable upper limit concerning the time for softening and melting of the balls, as well as their ease of transport and implementation.
According to a particular characteristic of the method of the invention, the diameter of said bittes is between 20 gm and 800 m.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Also according to the invention, said beads consist of glass, and preferably of a soda-lime glass. This type of glass, well known in the art, is used in particular for the manufacture of flat glass.
Still according to the invention, said lubricant agent has a temperature at the start of softening of between 400 ° C. and 8000 C.
In accordance with the invention, said lubricant agent sheets are introduced by conduits inserted into the walls of La Lingotiere and opening out in the interval between the wall of the ingot mold and the cast metal.
It also appeared advantageous to adjust the flow rate of the lubricating agent as a function of the flow rate of molten metal, in particular the flow rate of steel, in order to permanently ensure a satisfactory lubricating effect.
In principle, the supply of balls of lubricant agent can be ensured by a natural flow. However, it has been found to be interesting, according to a particular variant of the invention, to realize this pressure supply, in particular in order to prevent any risk of clogging of the supply orifices.
An example of implementation will make it possible to show various advantages linked to the method of the present invention.
Square blooms of 220 mm side were poured into a steel containing 0.8% C. The temperature of the steel was close to 15000C. At a distance of about 10 cm below the level of the meniscus, 12 injectors were arranged, each having an outlet section of 12 mm 2, at the rate of two injectors per side and one injector in each angle of the ingot mold. These injectors were supplied from cylinders, via stainless steel tubes with an internal diameter of 6 mm. Through these injectors, glass beads with a particle size between 100 m and 200 m were introduced, at a flow rate
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
overall of 0.5 kg / min.
The beads consisted of a soda-lime glass having the following composition, by weight:
EMI5.1
<tb>
<tb> SiO2 <SEP>: <SEP> 71.6 <SEP>% <SEP> Na2O <SEP>: <SEP> 14 <SEP>%
<tb> Al2O3 <SEP>: <SEP> 1 <SEP>% <SEP> MgO <SEP>: <SEP> 4 <SEP>%
<tb> CaO <SEP>: <SEP> 9 <SEP>% <SEP> K2O <SEP>: <SEP> 0.4 <SEP>%.
<tb>
Their start of softening temperature was 570 C.
Under these conditions, and with a fixed ingot mold, that is to say one not subjected to vibrations, a casting speed of 1.2 m / min was reached, with a steel flow rate 30% higher than that which would have been reached in a vibrating ingot mold, without the lubrication according to the invention.
The products obtained had a perfectly smooth surface, containing neither shrinkage cracks nor oscillation marks.
The process of the invention makes it possible to improve the surface quality of the continuously cast products; It also increases the casting speed, without compromising the safety of the casting, that is to say without increasing the risk of breakthroughs. It thus contributes to improving the productivity of the casting installations.
In addition, the installation required is simplified, because it no longer includes La Lingotiere's oscillation mechanism; Finally, it is no longer necessary to provide a device for preheating the lubricant.
The method of the invention poses no implementation problem, since the balls used constitute an industrial product available in a wide range of particle sizes. Due to their spherical shape, the balls flow without difficulty in the conduits and they do not present a risk of abrasion of the walls of the Lingotiere, even in the event of incomplete fusion
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Finally, the composition of the beads can easily be adapted, at the time of their manufacture, to take account of various conditions, such as: - ability to soften and melt without preheating; - Ability to wet a hot surface, such as a steel skin at a temperature of the order of 1200 C; - viscosity low enough to ensure a good lubricant effect;
- Ability to flow and fill the gap between the walls of the mold and the surface of the product flowing.
