<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Le procédé de l'invention permet en fait de restaurer l'intégrité mécanique de la paroi des tubes de générateurs de vapeur qui, en fonctionnement, auraient été attaqués localement par la corrosion sous tension : 1 ) en apportant une couche protectrice qui empêche l'eau primaire corrosive d'attaquer la surface interne des tubes ; 2 ) en apportant une couche d'étanchéité qui empêche l'eau primaire de pénétrer dans le circuit secondaire par des fissures existant déjà ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Method for depositing a covering material on the internal wall of a tube".
The present invention relates to a method for depositing a covering material on the internal wall of a tube, more particularly of a metal tube of a steam generator.
In pressurized water nuclear reactors, heat is produced by the chain reaction in the nucleus, it is removed by cooling water under high pressure and it is conveyed to the steam generator which contains some thousands of metal tubes , generally made of an alloy of the Inconel 600 type (alloy containing approximately 75% of nickel and other elements such as chromium and iron). These tubes transfer heat to a secondary circuit where steam is formed.
Experience shows that in operation a large number of Inconel 600 tubes leak from the primary side of the generator to the secondary side of the latter and vice versa, following the formation of small cracks by a phenomenon of corrosion under tension caused by the primary cooling water passing through the tubes and the secondary supply water passing outside of them and turning into vapor. In order to prevent the tubes which have leaks by corrosion under tension from being put out of operating condition, various means have been sought to restore them.
The existing repair methods are "sleeving" (insertion into the channel of the tubes of a sleeve), "rotopeeing" (hammering of the tubes by means of rotary abrasive brushes), "shotpeeing" (blasting) and recently deposition nickel electrolytic.
The disadvantages of these methods are insufficient prevention against the formation of cracks and, generally, an extension of cracks for the first three methods. Regarding the electrolytic deposition of nickel, this is a process
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
complicated and slow, especially for applying the protective layer inside the tubes.
One of the essential aims of the present invention consists in proposing a method which makes it possible to remedy the above-mentioned drawbacks.
To this end, according to the invention, a covering material in the form of molten powder is projected onto the internal wall of the tube, by means of a plasma torch so as to stop the progression of cracks in the tube caused by corrosion under stress, or to prevent their occurrence.
According to a particular embodiment of the method of the invention, the diameter of the tube does not exceed 30 mm.
According to another particular embodiment, a material chosen from the group comprising metals and metal alloys is used as covering material.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, an extension is used on the plasma torch to project the covering material inside the tube and the extension or the tube is rotated so as to distribute uniformly the covering on the inner wall of the tube.
Finally, the invention also relates to a tube as treated by the method described above.
Other details and particularities of the invention will emerge from the description given below, by way of nonlimiting example, of some particular embodiments, with reference to the appended drawing, of the process according to the invention.
The single figure shows, schematically, an elevational view with partial breakage of an extension of a plasma spraying device in a metal tube, arranged to cover with a material the internal wall thereof.
The invention relates to a method for depositing a covering material on the internal wall of a tube, in particular a metal tube of a steam generator. An essential characteristic of this process is that the covering material in the form of powder brought into fusion is projected onto the internal wall of the tube, by means of a plasma torch, so as to stop the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
progression of cracks in the tube caused by stress corrosion, or to prevent their occurrence.
As we know, the plasma torch uses a throttled electric arc to stimulate an inert gas up to thermal plasmas that can reach temperatures of 16,000 C.
The protective covering material is brought in the form of powder into the plasma torch by an inert carrier gas, such as argon, helium, or mixtures of argon and nitrogen or hydrogen. and nitrogen, it is brought to fusion in the flame, and it is projected at an average speed of 610 m per second on the substrate, in this case on the internal wall of the metal tube. Due to this enormous speed and these high temperatures, the molten particles form micro-welds with the base material forming the inner wall of the tube.
This is how very dense protective coatings are obtained with very low porosity, few oxides being formed taking into account the fact that the inert gas protects against oxidation. ba base material should not be preheated as in other spray application techniques, and the temperature of the base material during spraying should not exceed 100 C - 200 C.
The tubes used are metal tubes, generally made of Inconel 600 when it comes to steam generator tubes.
The covering material used consists of a pure metal, such as, for example, pure nickel, or a metal alloy, such as Inconel 600, alloys based on nickel and aluminum, etc. Other materials could also be considered in other types of application. The protective layer covers the internal surface of the tube over a considerable length and its thickness is of the order of approximately 200 microns. The inner surface of the tube is preferably roughly etched by sandblasting so as to increase the adhesion of the protective layer thereto.
The process of the invention therefore makes it possible to apply, with the plasma torch projection technique to the internal surface of tubes, a protective layer which will stop the extension or progression of cracks inside them. and which will therefore maintain the usefulness of the tubes. This process thus allows
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
to obtain a more effective protective layer and in a shorter time than with the processes of the prior art.
The object of the invention will be further illustrated by the description given below of a variant of a plasma torch, which can be advantageously used for the implementation of the method described above.
The equipment in question (not shown in the figure) consists of a plasma pistol, a control unit for regulating and supplying the pistol with the power supply and regulating the flow of inert gases, plasma gases and powder-promoting gases. An extension 2 fixed to the plasma gun via a connecting member 1 is introduced into the Inconel tube 3 of a steam generator, of a very small diameter, generally not exceeding 30 mm, to project the covering material 4 onto the internal surface 5 of the tube. It is possible to rotate either the extension 2 or the entire torch so as to distribute the covering 4 uniformly on the internal wall 5 of the tube.
As already specified above, the powder 6 which is sprayed is a metal powder or a metal alloy powder. The methods of controlling the protective layer 7 are, inter alia, microscopic control, hardness and density measurements, porosity and adhesion.
The method of the invention in fact makes it possible to restore the mechanical integrity of the wall of the steam generator tubes which, in operation, would have been attacked locally by corrosion under tension: 1) by providing a protective layer which prevents the corrosive primary water to attack the inner surface of the tubes; 2) by providing a sealing layer which prevents primary water from entering the secondary circuit through already existing cracks;
3) the plasma torch device, possibly coupled to a robot, makes it possible to carry out a repair in the highly radioactive radiation field of the steam generator and can be used to cover the internal face of tubes of extreme diameter ment reduced, generally not exceeding 30 mm, which had proved impracticable so far with existing methods.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In addition, as already specified above, the recovery process of the invention is much faster than the electrolytic deposition process currently used.
It is obvious that the method of the invention can also be applied as a preventive measure.
It goes without saying of course that the present invention is not limited to the various embodiments described and that many other variants can still be envisaged without departing from the scope of this patent.
