John William Mansell Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia Raised Panels for Doors and/or Windows ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION DETAILS [311 Application No(s) [33] Country PK4444 AU [321 Application Date 1 February 1991 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to melus:- 5815/3 -I BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to raised panels for doors and/or windows, and, more particularly, to devices and methods for producing raised panels in aluminium doors or windows.
It is well known for timber doors to be provided with raised panels.
In such cases, the timber panels are firstly moulded to the correct shape and are then inserted between the horizontal rails and vertical stiles making up the door. The raised panels are therefore formed of a generally solid slab of timber with moulded, generally tapered edges.
At present, however, more and more doors and windows are being manufactured of aluminium or other metals or alloys. It will be apparent that it is not feasible to manufacture such raised panels for doors or windows from solid metal, quite apart from the further difficulties of moulding the tapered edges.
S 15 SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION 0000 It is therefore an object of the present invention to overcome, or at S least ameliorate, the above disadvantages by enabling doors and/or windows with raised panels to be easily manufactured in aluminium or other metals or alloys.
Accordingly, in one aspect, the invention provides an extruded section comprising, in cross section, two generally opposed arms which converge to first ends thereof from second ends thereof, the first ends of the arms being joined together via a first coupling member shaped and arranged to couple the section to a framing member of a door or window, the 25 second ends of the arms being joined together via a base portion of a generally channel-shaped member shaped and arranged to receive substantially flat panels within and adjacent either side of the channel of *the channel-shaped member.
0o According to a second aspect, the invention provides a door or window having a plurality of vertical framing members interconnected by a plurality of horizontal framing members and raised panels between at least some of the horizontal and vertical framing members, the raised panels being formed by two parallel sheets having their adjacent edges inserted into a channel portion forming part of an extruded section, the sheets being biased against the inside side edges of the channel portion, and the extruded section further comprising, in cross section, two generally opposed arms which converge to first ends thereof from second ends thereof, the first ends CSH/1234E -2-

of the arms being joined together via a first coupling member shaped and arranged to couple the section to the framing members, and the second ends of the arms being joined together via the width of the base of the channel portion.
The arms can be shaped to smoothly taper between the spacing at their first ends and the spacing at their second ends, or can be shaped to curve therebetween or, indeed, to have a series of step portions therebetween.
In a preferred embodiment, the two panels are biased against the sides of the channel portion by means of a spring, preferably a leaf spring coupled to the base of the channel portion.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention will now be more fully described, by way of example, with reference to the drawings, of which: Figure 1 shows a door incorporating the present invention; Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view on line A-A of Figure 1; Figure 3 shows, in more detail, a portion of Figure 2 adjacent the side of the door; Figure 4 shows, in more detail, a portion of Figure 2 adjacent the centre of the door; 20 Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view of the extruded section according to a first aspect of the present invention; and Figure 6 is a perspective view of the extruded section of Figure DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Thus, as shown in Figure 1, one embodiment of the invention relates to a door 1 having framing members constituted by stiles 2 and 3, top rail 4, bottom rail 5, lock rail 6 and muntin 7. As will be appreciated, the top area of the door I, between top rail 4 and lock rail 6, can be opaque or glazed, as desired. The bottom area of the door 1 is formed with two raised panels 8 and 9, one on either side of the muntin 7. In order for 30 the panels 8 and 9 to be raised, they require wedge or tapered connecting profiles for connection to the adjoining stiles 2 and 3, lock and bottom rails 6 and 5 and the muntin 7.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view on line A-A of Figure 1 showing the way in which the raised panels 8 and 9 can be manufacuied using extruded section 10 to form the wedge or tapered connecting profiles. As can be seen generally in Figure 2, the stiles 2 and 3 are formed of generally box-shaped extruded sections having generally flat outer faces and an inner face shaped to receive one side of a connecting profile
US
S
5 ~S CSH/1234E -3- The muntin 7, on the other hand, again formed as a box-shaped extruded section, has both side faces shaped, in a similar manner to the inner faces of stiles 2 and 3, to receive corresponding sides of connecting profiles Each of the raised panels 8 and 9 is formed by two flat sheets held apart by springs within a channel portion of the connecting profile The manner in which connecting profile 10 co-operates with stile 2 and raised panel 8 to form one edge of the door is shown in Figure 3 and the manner in which a similar connecting profile 10 co-operates with muntin 7 to form the other edge of raised panel 8 is shown in Figure 4. It will be appreciated that raised panel 9 is formed in an identical fashion.
Figures 5 and 6 show a cross-section and a perspective view of connecting profile 10 and serve to clarifj which of the elements shown i" Figures 3 04 and 4 form part of the extruded section, and which are separate.
Thus, it will be clear from these Figures that connecting profile is an extruded section, usually of aluminium, having two generally opposed arms 11 and 12 having a spacing at a first end smaller than their spacing Sat a second end. The arms 11 and 12 are joined at their first end by a transverse member 13 having lips 14 and 15 on either side thereof. The arms 11 and 12 extend past the transverse member 13 to provide two opposed protruding fingers 16 and 17 over which a channel glazing vinyl strip 26 can be fitted, as will be described further below. In addition, at the first end of the profile 10, in front of transverse member 13, there is 04 provided a generally circular aperture 32 to accept a self-tapping screw, S which is used to hold adjacent profiles 10 at right angles to each other.
25 The arms 11 and 12 are shaped, as previously mentioned, to have a wider spacing at their second end than at their first end. Thus, the arms 11 and 12 can be smoothly curved, straight, or can be stepped. The second ends of the arms 11 and 12 are connected by a base portion 18 of a channel having two side walls 19 and 20. In the connecting profile 10, as illustrated, the base portion 18 is curved around to form two small flanges 21 and 22 adjacent the inner face of each of the side walls 19 and 20. The flanges 21 and 22 accomodate a corner stake (not shown) comprising a right angled element for holding adjacent profiles 10 at right angles to each other.
Turning more particularly to Figures 3 and 4, it will be seen that aluminiom sheets 23 and 24 are arranged with their edges inserted into the channel formed between side walls 19 and 20 and base portion 18 of the connecting profile 10. The edges of sheets 23 and 24 fit between the CSH/1234E -4respective flanges 21 and 22 and side walls 19 and 20. The sheets 23 and 24 are biased against the inner surface of side walls 19 and 20 by means of a generally U-shaped spring 25 which is fixed at its base to the base portion 18 of connecting profile 10 and the two arms of the spring include outward facing prongs which contact the respective sheets 23 and 24 to bias them against the inner surface of the respective side wall 19 and 20 of connecting profile 10. As shown, spring 25 is fastened to connecting profile 10 by means of a screw passing through the base of the U-shaped spring 25 and into the base portion 18 of connecting profile 10. However, any suitable fastening means could be used.
As was previously mentioned, the first end of connecting profile is provided with a channel glazing vinyl strip 26 fitted over protruding fingers 16 and 17. The cnannel glazing vinyl strip 26 includes a top portion 27, which fits over the ends of the fingers 16 and 17, two side 15 walls 28 and 29, which extend over the respective fingers 16 and 17, and o.o cap portions 30 and 31 extending away from thp fingers 16 and 17, respectively. Each of the side walls 28 and 29 is provided with a plurality of splines which co-operate with a sawtooth portion provided on the corresponding one of the framing members, such that, when a channel glazing vinyl strip 26 is in position, the splines and the saw tooth portion co-operate to hold the elements in position.
It will be clear that the inner faces of stiles 2 and 3 and both side *4 faces of muntin 7, as well as the bottom face of lock rail 6 and the top face of bottom rail 5 are all formed in the same way so as to accept and 25 co-operate with the channel glazing vinyl strip 26 to hold a first end of connecting profile 10 in position. Although this construction will not be described in detail, it will be clear from Figures 3 and 4 that the *0 appropriate face of the framing member is provided with turned in edges, 30along the centre thereof, the edges being formed with the sawtooth portion for co-operating with the splines of the channel glazing vinyl strip 26.
However, it will also be apparent that the firs+ end of connecting profile could be affixed to the appropriate framing ir,,;iber in any desired manner. In the present embodiment, the transverse member 13 and lips 14 and 15 serve to cover over the cap portions 30 and 31 of the channel glazing vinyl strip 26. However, If a different means is utilised to fix the connecting profile 10 to the framing member, the transverse member 13 with lips 14 and 15 may not be appropriate.
CSH/1234E It will be apparent to a person skilled in the art that the essence of the invention resides in the connecting profiles 10 having two generally opposed arms which are more closely spaced at one end than at the ot:er with the closely spaced end being connectable to the framing members of a door or window and with the widely spaced end having a channel for receiving flat sheets to form the raised panel. Accordingly, any variations or improvements which utilise this inventive concept are intended to be included within the scope of the invention. It will also be apparent that, although the invention has b'en particularly described with reference to forming raised panels in a door, it can be equally well utilised to provide raised panels in window frames.
