KEVIN JOSEPH MULLANE PRISCILLA AUDREY MULLANE MARU-C-eO&E- O- NORDS-WHARF-23-01 Yd0«.t Complete Specification for the invention entitled: A 3 DIMENSIONAL METHOD FOR ORIGINAL ART.
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:-* SNote: The description is to be typed in double spacing, pica type face, in an area not exceeding 250 mm in depth and 160 mm in width, on tough white paper of good quality and it is to be inserted inside this form, 14599/78- L Printed by C. J. THOMPSON, Commonwealth Government Printer, Canberra r r_ -2- A 3 Dimensional Method for Original Art Technical Field The present invention relates to a method of producing a 3 dimensional representation.
Background Art Existing methods of preparing 3 dimensional effects are generally complicated and time consuming and do not always give very satisfactory results.
Qbject of the Invention It is an object of the present invention to provide a method of producing a 3 dimensional representation.
Disclosure of the Invention The present inventors have discovered a method of producing a 3 dimensional representation which has applications in artistic or commercial works.
As used herein the term "suitable fabric" refers to fabric with a nap or pile which is capable of being printed in a screen printing process.
According to this invention there is provided a method of producing a 3 dimensional representation which comprises the steps of: a) mounting a suitable fabric (as hereinbefore defined) onto a backing, b) applying at least one background colour to the mounted fabric using a screen printing process, c) applying a mixture of a waterbased dye and a waterbased adhesive 2, to the fabric in a desired design, using a screen printing process, d) placing a covering over the printed fabric, e) applying force to the covering by rolling means so as to bring the covering into contact with the design, and f) removing the covering from the fabric.
S
f 30 The method of the invention is generally applicable to artistic or -A 1 commercial designs.
SSuitable fabrics with a pile or nap include brushed cotton or velvet. Typically brushed cotton will be used.
The fabric may be mounted onto any appropriate backing, typically an art board such as Fineline or a similar board is used. The fabric may be i
I
II Dura~- -~l 3 applied to the board by means of any suitable adhesive for instance a 3M No. 76 adhesive. In a preferred embodiment a second board is used as a mounting board.
Any dye which is suitable for colouring fabric can be used to print the background colour onto the fabric. Typically heavy consistency water based fabric dyes are used for the application of the design to tne fabric.
Suitable water based adhesives for use In step c) include clear drying water based adhesives such as Aquadhere.
The covering for the fabric will desirably be in the form of a sheet of an appropriate material such as paper or plastic. Preferably light weight paper eg. 39gsm, or paper attached to a flexible plastic sheet are used.
5t I 4h 44i 4, It 4r 1P The rolling means will typically be in the form of a steel roller of suitable weight eg. approximately 169 kgs. The roller may be applied to and moved across the surface of the covering manually or by mechanical means. Similarly the covering may be removed manually or by mechanical means as the roller is drawn across the covering or shortly thereafter.
After drying the design can be painted using any suitable media such as oil pastels.
Brief Description of the Drawings
I-,
i: A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Fig. 1, is a schematic perspective view of the mounted fabric on which the desired design has been printed according to the invention.
Fig. 2, is a schematic perspective view of the mounted fabric of figure 1, showing a. roller being moved across the covering over the design t as the covering is removed.
Fig. 3, is a schematic perspective view of the finished 3 dimensionpl representation prepared according to the invention.
3o Best Mode for Carrvina out the Invention t ,L In the method described a top quality plain brushed cotton or similar fabric is used.
In the operation of the invention, 2 sets of art boards (Fineline or similar, usually 6 to 8 in each set) are used. One board 3 is finished art size, the other board (not shown), is of larger dimensions for use as a mounting board.
i i i 1- Pm~l-- ij Ii ii
I~
-4- The brushed fabric 2 is cut to the size required, then stretched and taped to the mounting board. The art board 3 and the mounted fabric 2 are sprayed with a 3M No. 76 adhesive or other suitable adhesives. The art board 3 is then placed face down on the mounted fabric 2 and a heavy roller 4 is used for perfect adhesion, thus transferring fabric 2 to the art board 3. The fabric 2 is then trimmed to the size of the art board 3. The large mounting boards are then set aside.
Next the background colour for the subject of the representation 1 is then printed by using a screen printing process with fabric-dye. This printing flattens the background area 5 as shown in Fig. 1 and contributes to the 3 dimensional effect which follows.
Following this a heavy consistency water based fabric dye and a clear drying water based adhesive such as Aquadhere are mixed together, and using this mixture a desired design 6 is screen printed on the mounted fabric 2 13 for the 3 dimensional effect.
After each board 3 is printed it is then transferred to a perfectly level table (not shown) on which a 10mm foam mat 7 has been prepared.
The complete fabric area 2 is then covered with a lightweight sheet of paper 8 (39gsm) or if the art board is a larger size, the paper can be attached to a 2mm flexible plastic sheet (not shown).
Using a perfectly surfaced solid steel roller 4 (approx. 160kgs) one edge 12 of the paper 8, is grasped firmly by hand and with a very calculated action, as shown Fig. 2, the roller 4 is forced over the design area 6 making a firm contact with the paper 8 and dye mixture 9. As the paper 8 forces the roller 4 ahead, it raises the pile 11 of the fabric 2 to which the dye mixture 9 has been applied, up to 10mm, thus creating the 3D effect, (Fig. 3).
After complete drying, the raised design 0lO can be painted by hand, S using oil pastels or other suitable media.
-3 0 The result achieved by this method is a raised textured area as required by the artist.
5 Industrial Applicability This invention provides a method of producing a 3 dimensional representation which may be used for the purpose of making more realistic, any subject, such as: the natural beauty of Australian flora, fauna, birds and landscapes, as well as any other desired subject suitable for this effect for the use in original paintings, wall hangings, murals and any other desired art or commercial applications where this effect is appropriate.
