Abstract

Method for the production of proembryonic cotton cell biomass in liquid suspensions, comprising the following steps: (a) induction of cotton callus formation at approx. 20 DEG to 40 DEG C, by placing cotton plant tissue on a medium which is suitable for callus induction, followed by further cultivation steps for preventing discoloration; (b) suspension of up to 40 mg/ml of the callus in a suitable liquid medium which induces proembryonic cell biomass and which contains a relatively low concentration of at least one auxin until lumpy aggregations of proembryonic cell biomass are formed which multiply rapidly; and (c) transfer of the rapidly multiplying lumpy aggregations of the proembryonic cell biomass to a liquid nutrient medium in which smaller, more finely-dispersed proembryonic cell biomass can be formed, where said medium contains a relatively high concentration of at least one auxin. The proembryonic cell biomass is capable of developing mature embryos, small plantlets and, finally, mature plants. <IMAGE>
