Description

MULTI-PURPOSE MINERAL BODYWASH FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a multi-purpose mineral bodywash. It relates particularly but not
exclusively to a soap-free bodywash which is suitable for all skin types and designed to achieve a deeply cleansing result to improve circulation and bring about a smooth healthy
glow to the skin without the need for any foaming prohibitors.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Numerous types and formulations of bodywash are currently available. Some of these are effective at cleaning the skin while at the same time creating skin irritations. Conventional
soaps have a relatively high pH, sometimes around 11, whereas healthy skin pH is around 5.5. Many types of bodywash damage the skin's protective layer of oils, fatty acids and
amino acids, often leading to skin dryness, itching, irritation and inflammation.
Many types of bodywash can lead to worsening of such skin conditions as dermatitis, rosacea, eczema and acne. Other types of bodywash may be more protective of the skin but less effective at deep cleansing.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the present invention there is provided a multi-purpose mineral bodywash
formulation including the following active ingredients:
• Purified water with approximately 0.5% by weight Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice,
together comprising 60% to 90% by weight of the formulation;
• Kaolin Clay, comprising 5% to 15% by weight of the formulation;
• Kakadu Plum Extract, comprising 0.05% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Green Tea Extract, comprising 0.05% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• SEOC Harmony Blend, comprising 0.1% to 1% by weight of the formulation; and
• Pentavitin, comprising 0.01% to 1% by weight of the formulation.
The multi-purpose mineral bodywash formulation may include any suitable thickeners, emulsifiers, preservatives, humectants, emollients, colourants, antioxidants and pH
adjusters. Suitable additional ingredients which fulfil these functions are:
• Solagum AX, comprising 0.5% to 2% by weight of the formulation;
• Microcare SB, comprising 0.5% to 2% by weight of the formulation;
• Xanthan Gum, comprising 0.1% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Glycerine, comprising 1% to 5% by weight of the formulation;
• Jojoba Oil, comprising 0.005% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Dermosoft GMCY, comprising 1% to 5% by weight of the formulation;
• Iron Oxide Red, comprising 0.005% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Sodium Citrate, comprising 0.1% to 1% by weight of the formulation; and
• Citric Acid, comprising 0.01% to 1% by weight of the formulation.
A method of manufacturing a multi-purpose bodywash formulation according to the invention includes the following steps:
a) Combine the Solagum AX, Microcare SB, Xanthan Gum, Glycerine, Jojoba Oil,
Dermosoft GMCY, and Kaolin, and heat to 65°C under low shear until homogeneously mixed. b) Add to the mixture the purified water with Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice and stir
under low shear. Ensure that the mixture is fully homogenized.
c) Allow to cool below 35°C and add the Kakadu Plum Extract, Green Tea Extract, SEOC
Harmony Blend, Pentavitin, Iron Oxide Red, Sodium Citrate and Citric Acid. d) Adjust pH initially to 5.5-6.0 if required, and e) Adjust the viscosity if required using Sodium Chloride and adjust pH to 5.5-6.0 using
Citric Acid.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to a particular embodiment. It is to be understood that the specific details of the embodiment do not
supersede the generality of the foregoing description.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF AN EXAMPLE EMBODIMENT
The example embodiment includes the following ingredients:
Phase A ingredient:
• Purified water with approximately 0.5% by weight Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, together comprising 60% to 90% by weight of the formulation;
Phase B ingredients:
• Solagum AX, comprising 0.5% to 2% by weight of the formulation;
• Microcare SB, comprising 0.5% to 2% by weight of the formulation;
• Xanthan Gum, comprising 0.1% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Glycerine, comprising 1% to 5% by weight of the formulation;
• Jojoba Oil, comprising 0.005% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Dermosoft GMCY, comprising 1% to 5% by weight of the formulation;
• Kaolin Clay, comprising 5% to 15% by weight of the formulation;
Phase C ingredients:
• Kakadu Plum Extract, comprising 0.05% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Green Tea Extract, comprising 0.05% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• SEOC Harmony Blend, comprising 0.1% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Pentavitin, comprising 0.01% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Iron Oxide Red, comprising 0.005% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Sodium Citrate, comprising 0.1% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Citric Acid, comprising 0.01% to 1% by weight of the formulation.
The formulation is created by the following steps:
1. Combine the Phase B ingredients listed above and heat to 65°C under low shear until homogeneously mixed.
2. Add the Phase B ingredients to the Phase A ingredient and stir under low shear. Ensure that the mixture is fully homogenized.
3. Allow to cool below 35°C and add the Phase C ingredients. 4. Adjust pH initially to 5.5-6.0 if required, and
5. Adjust the viscosity if required using Sodium Chloride and adjust pH to 5.5-6.0 using Citric Acid.
This results in a viscous pink liquid, with a density of 1.00 to 1.05 and a final pH of 5.5 to 6.0.
The pH of cosmetic products should remain in a certain range so that the colour, viscosity, skin feel, and physicochemical stability remains intact during its shelf-life and during its
application by the consumer.
The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, where a pH of 7 is neutral, while a pH less than 7 is acidic and a pH greater than 7 is basic or alkaline. The skin's normal pH is slightly acidic.
If the skin pH is too acidic (less than 5.5) it can become irritated, red, inflamed, and even
painful to touch. If the skin pH is too alkaline (greater than 5.5), it can become dry, sensitive, and the person may even develop eczema. Newborns have relatively high pH
levels all over the skin. As babies get older, their pH levels decline. The average newborn has
a skin pH of about 7. This is compared to the average adult skin pH of 5.7.
It is therefore advisable when formulating washes, lotions, and creams to reach a pH
between 5-7 and the general rule is that slightly acidic products are preferred and perform
better for children.
Once the formulation process has been completed it is time to measure the pH of the
product, where one of these 3 possibilities can occur:
1. The pH of the product is exactly in the desired range and in the range where the preservative system has the highest efficiency. This is unfortunately rare, and in most cases,
it will be necessary either to reduce or increase the pH, dependent on the product being
formulated.
2. If the pH of the product is higher than the desired range, it needs to be reduced.
Citric acid, and lactic acid are the most suitable acids to reduce the pH of a cosmetic
product.
3. If the product pH is lower than the desired range it can be increased with Sodium
Citrate.
The particular ingredients and the reasons for their selection will now be described in further detail.
Purified Water: Purified water (CAS number 7732-18-5) is combined with about 0.5% by
weight of Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (CAS number 85507-69-3 / 94349-62-9). As a cosmetic ingredient, aloe vera is widely used in many mainstream skincare and cosmetics products.
The plant is skin-friendly and has a low risk of causing allergies, sensitivity or skin reactions, and it is also versatile. It also aids protection of the epidermis and the skin's ability to
restore itself and commonly used in after-sun products, facial, hair and body care. From the juice of Aloe Vera leaves this ingredient adds a calming effect to the skin. It is known for
soothing irritation and itching as well as being lightly moisturising.
Solagum AX: This is composed of approximately 75% Acacia Senegal Gum (CAS number 9000-01-5) and 25% Xanthan Gum (CAS number 11138-66-2). It has good sensorial
properties, and has multifunctional effects: thickening, emulsifying and stabilizing, offering good moisturisation, with a non-stringy texture.
Microcare SB: This is composed of approximately 55% purified water (CAS number 7732-18 ), 30% Sodium Benzoate (CAS number 532-32-1), and 15% Potassium Sorbate (CAS number
24634-61-5). It is a preservative, effective against a broad range of bacteria, moulds and yeasts and is ideal for Ecocert applications.
Xanthan Gum (CAS number 11138-66-2): This is used in a variety of cosmetics and personal
care products to help improve binding, emulsification, and thickening of the product. Naturally plant derived and safe to use in skincare, the most effective way to disperse this
gum is to blend into Glycerin to make a paste that can easily be mixed into the formulation.
Glycerine (Glycerin CAS number 56-81-5): This is used to provide smoothness and lubrication. It is also a well-known humectant that prevents the loss of moisture from
products so they don't dry out as quickly. It helps skin to hold water to prevent dryness and protect against irritation.
Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil (CAS number 90045-98-0): This is a carrier oil that
acts as a moisturizer and emollient, prevents transdermal water loss and retains moisture. It has good lubricant properties without leaving a greasy film on the skin as it penetrates into the skin.
Dermosoft GMCY (Glyceryl Caprylate) (CAS number 26402-26-6): This multifunctional
wetting agent provides moisturising properties and is suitable for many cosmetic applications. It has a co-emulsifying effect in emulsions, solubilises and pigment dispersions.
Moreover, it shows a strong antimicrobial activity and allows lower dosages of traditional preservatives or even replaces them completely. It is a 100% plant origin preservative which
has a high efficiency against micro-organisms. Naturally derived, it is a multi-functional ingredient system for preservative-free and self-preserving cosmetics protecting against
bacteria and yeast along with effectively protecting formulation ingredients against oxidation.
Kaolin Clay (CAS number 1332-58-7): This has a pH very similar to the skin and its main
benefit is in purifying the skin and absorbing its debris.
Kakadu Plum Extract: This is composed of approximately 19% purified water (CAS number 7732-18-5), 70% Glycerin (CAS number 56-81-5), 10% Terminalia Ferdinandiana Fruit Extract (CAS number 1176234-54-0), and 1% Sodium Benzoate (CAS number 532-32-1). This
includes a number of essential nutrients including Vitamin C, and has antiseptic wound healing properties whilst soothing for hypersensitive skin. It is good for stretch marks,
antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, reduces redness, swelling and skin irritation.
Green Tea Extract: This is composed of approximately 50% Glycerin (CAS number 56-81-5),
33% purified water (CAS number 7732-18-5), 15% Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract (CAS number 84650-60-2), and 2% Potassium Sorbate (CAS number 24634-61-5). This extract is an effective antioxidant and UV protectant, and is anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic and
antimicrobial. It helps to speed up skin exfoliation and aids in skin hydration.
SEOC Harmony Blend: This is composed of approximately 35% Citrus aurantium dulcis (Orange Peel) Oil (CAS number 8008-57-9), 30% Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil (CAS
number 8000-28-0), 20% Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Oil (CAS number 90082-51-2), % Cananga Odorata Flower (Ylang ylang) Oil (CAS number 8006-81-3), and 5% Anthemis
Nobilis Flower (Roman chamomile) Oil (CAS number 84649-86-5). Citrus aurantium dulcis
(Orange Peel) Oil has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and astringent properties that clean and rejuvenate the skin. Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil has antiseptic and anti
inflammatory properties and is effective in treating acne, dermatitis and oily skin. It promotes rapid healing and helps reduce scarring. Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Oil
has antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and astringent properties. Cananga Odorata Flower (Ylang ylang) Oil is relaxing, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory,
and can support balancing oil production within the skin. It also boosts the regenerative process of the epidermis. Anthemis Nobilis Flower (Roman chamomile) Oil is used to help
calm inflamed skin and ease skin conditions like eczema or rashes.
Pentavitin: This is composed of approximately 65% Saccharide Isomerate (CAS number 100843-69-4), 33% purified water (CAS number 7732-18-5), 1% Citric Acid (CAS number 77
92-9), and 1% Sodium Citrate (CAS number 68-04-2). This ingredient offers a reduction in
flakiness and itchiness caused by dry skin and offers hydration to the cell structure.
Iron Oxide Red: This is a natural cosmetic pigment mineral used to tint the formulation and
help protect skin from visible light.
Sodium Citrate (CAS number 68-04-2): This is the sodium salt of citric acid, which occurs naturally in many citrus fruits. It primarily functions as a buffering agent to control the pH level.
Citric Acid (CAS number 77-92-9): This has protective antioxidant properties.
The multi-purpose bodywash of the present invention is a soap free alternative mineral based formulation using the active ingredient of Kaolin clay which detoxifies the pores as it
sweeps away any impurities and dead skin cells leaving the skin soft, supple and revitalised. Kaolin is rich in silica and with a natural pH; its skin soothing properties make it suitable to calm inflamed and irritated skin, offering a sensorial skin-nourishing body wash formulation
that helps purify skin & gently neutralise irritation. Combined with aromatic essential oils, botanical extract of Kakadu plum and green tea to provide a deep cleansing solution that does not strip away essential oils and formulated with Jojoba Oil, this product is suitable as
an all over body wash solution for people suffering from sensitive and dry skin conditions. It is suitable for all skin types and designed to achieve a deeply cleansing result to improve circulation and bring about a smooth healthy glow to the skin without the need for any foaming prohibitors.
