Description
This invention relates to a body lotion. It relates particularly but not exclusively to a body
lotion which is designed to hydrate and improve the softness, flexibility and smoothness of a person's skin.
Numerous types and formulations of body lotions are currently available. The purpose of a
body lotion is usually to perform one or more of the following functions: to re-hydrate dried skin; to make the user feel and smell good; to help the user relax; to replenish extra dry or
rough spots on the skin; to smooth calluses; to soften the roughest parts of the user's body; and to make the user's skin glow.
Moisturisation of dry skin has typically been achieved by the use of petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly works as an occlusive moisturiser to prevent skin from drying out, but like
some other moisturisers and body lotions, it has the disadvantage of being greasy.
According to the present invention there is provided a body lotion formulation including the following active ingredients:
• Purified water with approximately 0.5% by weight Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Powder,
together comprising 60% to 90% by weight of the formulation;
• Shea Butter, comprising 0.5% to 5% by weight of the formulation;
• Kakadu Plum Extract, comprising 0.05% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Green Tea Extract, comprising 0.05% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Calendula Extract C02, comprising 0.005% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• SEOC Harmony Blend, comprising 0.1% to 1% by weight of the formulation; and
• Lactic Acid, comprising 0.05% to 1% by weight of the formulation.
The body lotion formulation may include any suitable thickeners, emulsifiers, preservatives, humectants, emollients, colourants, antioxidants and pH adjusters. Suitable additional
ingredients which fulfil these functions are:
• Xanthan Gum, comprising 0.1% to 1% by weight of the formulation;
• Microcare SB, comprising 0.5% to 2% by weight of the formulation;
• Glycerine, comprising 1% to 5% by weight of the formulation;
• Cetyl Alcohol, comprising 1% to 5% by weight of the formulation;
• Cetyl Stearyl Alcohol, comprising 0.5% to 5% by weight of the formulation;
• Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, comprising 5% to 10% by weight of the formulation;
• Crodamol MM, comprising 1% to 5% by weight of the formulation;
• Jojoba Oil, comprising 1% to 5% by weight of the formulation;
• Microcare DB, comprising 0.2% to 2% by weight of the formulation; and
• Polawax NF, comprising 1% to 5% by weight of the formulation.
A method of manufacturing a body lotion formulation according to the invention includes
the following steps:
a) Combine the Xanthum Gum, Microcare SB, Glycerine, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetyl Stearyl
Alcohol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Shea Butter, Crodamol MM, Jojoba Oil and
Polawax NF to make a slurry. b) Add the purified water with Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Powder to make a gel, and heat to
75°C.
c) Combine the Microcare DB, Kakadu Plum Extract and Green Tea Extract and heat to 75°C.
d) Add the mixture of step b) to the mixture of step c) and stir under high shear until smooth and glossy.
e) Allow to cool below 40°C.
f) Add the Calendula Extract C02, SEOC Harmony Blend and Lactic Acid and stir through until homogenized.
g) Check and adjust the pH to the final required setting 5.5-6.5.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to a particular embodiment. It is to be understood that the specific details of the embodiment do not
supersede the generality of the foregoing description.
The example embodiment of a body lotion formulation according to the present invention
includes the following ingredients:
Phase A ingredient:
• Purified water with approximately 0.5% by weight Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Powder, together comprising 60% to 90% by weight of the formulation;

The formulation is created by the following steps:
1. Combine the Phase B ingredients listed above to make a slurry. 2. Add the Phase A ingredient to make a gel, and heat to 75°C.
3. Combine the Phase C ingredients and heat to 75°C.
4. Add the phase A and B mixture to the Phase C mixture and stir under high shear until smooth and glossy.
5. Allow to cool below 40°C.
6. Add the Phase D ingredients and stir through until homogenised. 7. Check and adjust the pH to the final required setting 5.5-6.5.
This results in a viscous liquid, with a density of approximately 1.
The pH of cosmetic products should remain in a certain range so that the colour, viscosity,
skin feel, and physicochemical stability remains intact during its shelf-life and during its application by the consumer.
The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, where a pH of 7 is neutral, while a pH less than 7 is acidic
and a pH greater than 7 is basic or alkaline. The skin's normal pH is slightly acidic.
If the skin pH is too acidic (less than 5.5) it can become irritated, red, inflamed, and even painful to touch. If the skin pH is too alkaline (greater than 5.5), it can become dry,
sensitive, and the person may even develop eczema. Newborns have relatively high pH levels all over the skin. As babies get older, their pH levels decline. The average newborn has
a skin pH of about 7. This is compared to the average adult skin pH of 5.7.
It is therefore advisable when formulating washes, lotions, and creams to reach a pH between 5-7 and the general rule is that slightly acidic products are preferred and perform
better for children.
Once the formulation process has been completed it is time to measure the pH of the
product, where one of these 3 possibilities can occur:
1. The pH of the product is exactly in the desired range and in the range where the preservative system has the highest efficiency. This is unfortunately rare, and in most cases,
it will be necessary either to reduce or increase the pH, dependent on the product being formulated.
2. If the pH of the product is higher than the desired range, it needs to be reduced.
Citric acid, and lactic acid are the most suitable acids to reduce the pH of a cosmetic product.
3. If the product pH is lower than the desired range it can be increased with Sodium
Citrate.
The particular ingredients and the reasons for their selection will now be described in further detail.
Purified Water: Purified water (CAS number 7732-18-5) is combined with about 0.5% by
weight of Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Powder (CAS number 85507-69-3 / 94349-62-9). As a cosmetic ingredient, aloe vera is widely used in many mainstream skincare and cosmetics
products. The plant is skin-friendly and has a low risk of causing allergies, sensitivity or skin reactions, and it is also versatile. It also aids protection of the epidermis and the skin's ability to restore itself and commonly used in after-sun products, facial, hair and body care.
From the juice of Aloe Vera leaves this ingredient adds a calming effect to the skin. It is known for soothing irritation and itching as well as being lightly moisturising.
Xanthan Gum (CAS number 11138-66-2): This is used in a variety of cosmetics and personal
care products to help improve binding, emulsification, and thickening of the product. Naturally plant derived and safe to use in skincare, the most effective way to disperse this
gum is to blend into Glycerin to make a paste that can easily be mixed into the formulation.
Microcare SB: This is composed of approximately 55% purified water (CAS number 7732-18 ), 30% Sodium Benzoate (CAS number 532-32-1), and 15% Potassium Sorbate (CAS number
24634-61-5). It is a preservative, effective against a broad range of bacteria, moulds and yeasts and is ideal for Ecocert applications.
Glycerine (Glycerin CAS number 56-81-5): This is used to provide smoothness and
lubrication. It is also a well-known humectant that prevents the loss of moisture from products so they don't dry out as quickly. It helps skin to hold water to prevent dryness and protect against irritation.
Cetyl Alcohol (CAS number 36653-82-4): This helps to create smoother creams, thicker
lotions, and more stable foam products. It is used to soften the skin/hair as an emollient. It is considered an effective ingredient for soothing and healing dry skin.
CSA (Cetyl Stearyl Alcohol) (CAS number 67762-27-0 / 8005-44-5): This is an emulsifier
which helps prevent creams from separating into oil and liquid. As an emollient, cetyl alcohol has the ability to soften and smooth flakiness on the skin, which helps to reduce
rough, dry skin.
GTCC (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride) (CAS number 73398-61-5): Fractionated coconut oil of Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is a light colourless carrier oil which will not stain clothing, is
odorless and has a long shelf life and stability, acting as an emollient, lubricant and solvent.
Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter (CAS number 194043-92-0): This has good emolliency and moisturising properties and is a skin conditioning and viscosity increasing agent.
Crodomol MM (Myristyl Myristate) (CAS number 3234-85-3): This is a plant derived
ingredient that improves emulsion texture and stability.
Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil (CAS number 90045-98-0): This is a carrier oil that
acts as a moisturizer and emollient, prevents transdermal water loss and retains moisture. It
has good lubricant properties without leaving a greasy film on the skin as it penetrates.
Microcare DB: This is composed of approximately 87% Benzyl Alcohol (CAS number 100-51
6) and 13% Dehydroacetic Acid (CAS number 520-45-6). It is a preservative effective against
a broad range of bacteria, moulds and yeasts. It meets Ecocert and COSMOS standards, and is NaTrue Certified and Soil Association approved.
Polawax NF: This is composed of approximately 75% Cetearyl Alcohol (CAS number 67762
27-0 / 8005-44-5) and 25% Polysorbate 60 (CAS number 9005-67-8): It is a vegetable-derived emulsifying wax and stabiliser used in lotions and creams to give them a smooth consistency
and help keep them from separating.
Kakadu Plum Extract: This is composed of approximately 19% purified water (CAS number 7732-18-5), 70% Glycerin (CAS number 56-81-5), 10% Terminalia Ferdinandiana Fruit Extract
(CAS number 1176234-54-0), and 1% Sodium Benzoate (CAS number 532-32-1). This includes a number of essential nutrients including Vitamin C, and has antiseptic wound
healing properties whilst soothing for hypersensitive skin. It is good for stretch marks, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, reduces redness, swelling and
skin irritation.
Green Tea Extract: This is composed of approximately 50% Glycerin (CAS number 56-81-5), 33% purified water (CAS number 7732-18-5), 15% Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract (CAS
number 84650-60-2), and 2% Potassium Sorbate (CAS number 24634-61-5). This extract is an effective antioxidant and UV protectant, and is anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic and
antimicrobial. It helps to speed up skin exfoliation and aids in skin hydration.
Calendula C02 Extract (CAS number 84776-23-8): This has good skincare properties. It promotes wound healing, reduces inflammation, relieves dry and itchy skin and is ideal for
the treatment of eczema, nappy rash, sunburn, and sensitive skin.
SEOC Harmony Blend: This is composed of approximately 35% Citrus aurantium dulcis
(Orange Peel) Oil (CAS number 8008-57-9), 30% Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil (CAS number 8000-28-0), 20% Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Oil (CAS number 90082-51-2),
% Cananga Odorata Flower (Ylang ylang) Oil (CAS number 8006-81-3), and 5% Anthemis Nobilis Flower (Roman chamomile) Oil (CAS number 84649-86-5). Citrus aurantium dulcis (Orange Peel) Oil has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and astringent properties that clean and
rejuvenate the skin. Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil has antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties and is effective in treating acne, dermatitis and oily skin. It
promotes rapid healing and helps reduce scarring. Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Oil has antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and astringent properties.
Cananga Odorata Flower (Ylang ylang) Oil is relaxing, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, and can support balancing oil production within the skin. It also boosts the regenerative
process of the epidermis. Anthemis Nobilis Flower (Roman chamomile) Oil is used to help
calm inflamed skin and ease skin conditions like eczema or rashes.
Lactic Acid (CAS number 124-68-5), approximately 88% combined with purified water (CAS number 7732-18-5), approximately 12%: Often used as a natural pH adjuster in
formulations, lactic acid is produced by the fermentation of carbohydrates. Lactic acid protects the skin against external influences like bacteria, allergens and pollution, while
maintaining moisture.
A body lotion formulation of the type provided by the present invention is designed to hydrate and improve the skin softness, flexibility, and smoothness. Amongst the many
challenges faced with formulating this type of product is that they often leave a ghosting white appearance to the skin. This formulation is designed to offer good penetration
without any ghosting, imparting softness to the skin and providing a high degree of hydrating and nourishing. The combination of Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride and Jojoba oil
make this formulation highly hydrating and allows the formulation to have a creamy feel,
absorbing into the skin easily with no whiting effect to the skin. Crodomol MM (Myristyl Myristate), a plant-derived ingredient, enhances the formulation by improving emulsion
texture and stability. The Kakadu plum, green tea and calendula add their antiseptic, analgesic and skin conditioning to make this formulation a powerful antidote to strengthen and instantly soften the skin's protective barrier.
