Abstract

[Problem] To improve the palatability of a cattle feed containing sugar cane without using any other material having good palatability. [Solution] A feed for feeding cattle with sugar cane, wherein the sugar cane is used not in an unsqueezed state as such but preliminarily squeezed and divided into a squeeze cake (bagasse) and a juice, followed by remixing the bagasse with the juice to give a mixture.

Description

CATTLE FEED AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING THE SAME FIELD
[0001] The present disclosure relates to a cattle feed and a method for manufacturing the same.
DEFINITION
[0002] In this specification, the term 'comprising' is intended to denote the inclusion of a stated integer or integers, but not necessarily the exclusion of any other integer, depending on the context in which that term is used. This applies also to variants of that term such as 'comprise' or 'comprises'
BACKGROUND
[0003] Conventionally, the sugar obtained by squeezing and refining sugarcane has been provided mainly for human consumption. On the other hand, the pomace remained after the squeezing is often blended with cattle feed and used for cattle. The pomace of sugarcane is called bagasse. However, because bagasse is less palatable, cattle do not like it. The reason for this is that lignin, which is abundant in bagasse, is present in a state of being intricately intertwined with fiber compounds such as cellulose so that the grass itself is very hard. Even if sugarcane is blended with a feed in an unprocessed state without squeezing, there is still a problem in palatability.
[0004] Therefore, conventionally, in order to increase the palatability of cattle feed, bagasse is fermented and/or additives with good palatability are blended with the feed. For example, Japanese Unexamined Patent Application Publication No.2012-228218 discloses a cattle feed manufactured by fermenting an ingredient containing a food residue such as bagasse with lactic acid bacteria. Japanese Unexamined Patent Application Publication No. Hei 1-252255 discloses a cattle feed obtained by mixing pineapple waste, which is relatively palatable, with sugarcane in a state without squeezing.
[0005] The reference to prior art in the background above is not and should not be taken as an acknowledgment or any form of suggestion that the referenced prior art forms part of the common general knowledge in Australia or in any other country.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
[0006] However, there is a limitation in the palatability of bagasse simply by fermenting as disclosed in Japanese Unexamined Patent Application Publication No. 2012-228218. In addition, the fermentation process takes time. As disclosed in Japanese Unexamined Patent Application Publication No. Hei 1-252255, the palatability of the whole feed can be expected to be improved by blending ingredients having relatively good palatability. However, the necessity of the pineapple waste to be blended with sugarcane used as a feed ingredient would limit the selection of feed ingredients. This also increases ingredient costs.
[0007] Therefore, the inventors of the present invention have made intensive studies with the aim of using sugarcane as a cattle feed ingredient without blending other materials having good palatability and without degrading the palatability of the whole feed. As a result, the inventors found that the palatability of sugarcane could be improved by using sugarcane in a condition different from the conventional one.
[0008] Applicant recognizes it would be beneficial to improve the palatability of cattle feed containing sugarcane without blending other feed ingredients having good palatability.
[0009] Instead of feeding sugarcane to cattle in an unprocessed state without squeezing, a cattle feed is prepared by squeezing sugarcane to divide it into pomace (bagasse) and juice, and remixing the pomace (bagasse) and the juice in which sugar and other ingredients in the juice are not purified, to form a mixture to be fed to cattle. The pomace and juice are obtained from the same sugarcane.
[0010] The sugarcane is preferably crushed before squeezing.
[0011] The mixture of the pomace and the juice is preferably dried.
[0012] By using sugarcane in a condition different from the conventional one, it is possible to obtain cattle feed having good palatability without blending any other feed ingredient having good palatability.
[0013] According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a method for manufacturing a cattle feed ingredient, comprising: squeezing sugarcane to obtain pomace and juice, in which sugar and other ingredients in the juice are not purified, to form a mixture; and mixing the pomace and the juice in which sugar and other ingredients are not purified, to form a mixture; wherein the pomace and the juice are obtained from the same sugarcane.
[0014] According to yet another aspect of the invention there is also provided a cattle feed ingredient or a cattle feed, comprising: a mixture of pomace and juice obtained by squeezing sugarcane, wherein sugar and other ingredients in the juice are not purified, and wherein the pomace and the juice are obtained from the same sugarcane.
DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
[0015] The present invention is for cattle. Cattle maybe beef cattle (fattening cattle) or dairy cattle. The age in months is not particularly limited unless the cattle are suckling calves before weaning. The feed according to the present invention is preferably to be fed to breeding cows of about 2 to 10 months of age. This is because the rumen of cattle develops during this period, and sugarcane is expected to physically stimulate the development of the rumen.
[0016] Harvested sugarcane is not used in an unprocessed state. Instead, sugarcane is once squeezed and divided into pomace (bagasse) and juice. The obtained bagasse and juice are mixed again and given to cattle in a state of a mixture. The juice mainly contains sugar. The juice contains water-soluble fiber, ash, vitamins, and minerals, among others in addition to sugar. The juice may be mixed with bagasse without purifying sugar and other ingredients.
[0017] It is preferable that the sugarcane is roughly crushed or pulverized before squeezing. This crushing (pulverizing) will increase the squeezing efficiency and drying efficiency. This also improves ease of eating and palatability for cattle.
[0018] The mixture of the bagasse and the juice maybe fed to cattle as it is. However, it is more preferable to feed the mixture to cattle as a cattle feed ingredient after mixing it with a base cattle feed. The whole feed may be dried after blending the mixture with the feed. It is more preferable to mix the mixture into the feed after drying the mixture in advance. If the undried mixture is blended with the feed, the drying process of the whole feed will take time and labor. Drying the mixture before blending with the feed can save the time and labor for drying and improve the handleability of the mixture. In the case of giving the mixture to cattle without blending as well, it is preferable to give it after drying. For the drying method, conventionally known methods can be used. A typical example is hot air drying.
[0019] Any feed conventionally used as cattle feed can be used as the base feed with which the mixture is blended as feed ingredient. It is not necessary to blend ingredients that are inherently palatable with sugarcane in order to positively improve the palatability of the whole feed. However, it is also possible to blend ingredients that are inherently palatable with sugarcane.
[0020] The blending amount (content) of the mixture in the whole feed may be set to be the same as the sugarcane content in a conventionally known cattle feed. The content of the mixture in the whole feed may be appropriately adjusted according to the use, breed, environment, and age of the cattle, and according to the nutrients and nutritional value required at that time. Specifically, the content of the mixture in the whole feed may be 1 to 60 wt%, preferably 3 to 50 wt%, more preferably to 40 wt% with respect to the weight after drying.
Examples
[0021] Example 1
Sugarcane (made in Australia) was crushed to about 5 to 10 mm in size after harvesting and then squeezed. Subsequently, the obtained bagasse and juice were mixed again, and the mixture was hot-air-dried at 150 °C for about 1 hour.
[0022] Comparative Example 1
Sugarcane (made in Australia) was crushed to about 5 to 10 mm in size after harvesting and heat-dried without squeezing.
[0023] Comparative Example 2
Pineapple waste (made in the Philippines) purchased from Hinode Kosan was blended.
[0024] A palatability test (Cafe Terrace Latin square design) was conducted using the feed ingredients of Example 1 and Comparative Examples 1, 2. In order to directly evaluate the palatability of the feed ingredients of Example 1 and Comparative Examples 1, 2 by excluding the influence of other feed ingredients, only the feed ingredients of Examples 1 and Comparative Examples 1, 2 were directly given in this test without blending the feed ingredients with other base feeds.
[0025] The test animals were three to six month-old Japanese black breeding cows. In the test method, five cows per site were used in two sites, and the feed intake per site for 5 hours was confirmed. The results are shown in Table 1. It should be noted that, in order to eliminate the locational factor, the location of each test site was changed and the site intake average values for a total of 3 days were compared.
[0026] [Table 1]
Ex.1 Comp. 1 Comp. 2 feed intake (kg) 1.063 0.607 0.235
[0027] From the results of Table 1, it was revealed that Example 1 and Comparative Example 1 had better palatability than the pineapple waste (Comparative Example 2), which is generally considered to have good palatability. Furthermore, Example 1, which was once squeezed and then mixed again, had better palatability than Comparative Example 1, which was fed as it was without squeezing. As a result, it was confirmed that squeezing sugarcane to obtain bagasse andjuice, mixing the bagasse and juice again to form a mixture, and blending the mixture with cattle feed would improve the palatability of the whole feed as compared with the cases of blending sugarcane without squeezing and could improve the palatability of the whole feed without using any other ingredient having good palatability.
