Description

[0001] The present Application is a Divisional Application from International Patent Application No. PCT/AU2018/000095. The entire disclosure of International Patent Application No. PCT/AU2018/000095 is incorporated herein by reference. The Application Claims priority to AU2017902248 filed on 13 June 2017, which is herein incorporated by reference in its entirety.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION [0002] The present invention relates to a textile and garment comprising a dual-weave of composite materials. In particular, this invention relates to a textile and garment comprising a dual weave of composite materials comprising cotton and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and optionally elastane.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION [0003] Knit fabrics are one of the oldest and maybe the easiest way of producing a fabric. In a knit fabric the yams make loops around each other, with the looping causing bending which results in softer fabrics that have greater volume than standard woven fabrics. Generally, knit fabrics are much softer and more flexible than woven fabrics. However, the fabric stability or shape retention is not as good as in woven fabrics. Therefore, knit fabrics are used in topswear like jumpers or sweatshirts or t-shirts or for bottoms in more sportive fields like sweatpants due to their softness and comfort.
[0004] A woven fabric is obtained by crossing weft yarns and warp yams, in a weaving pattern whereby the weft yarns extend over and below one or more warp yams to provide, with respect to the warp yarns, correspondent over portions and under portions.
[0005] Denim is a popular fabric that is produced by weaving weft and warp yams in a twill design. Denim is a sturdy, cotton warp-faced textile in which the weft passes under two or more warp threads.
[0006] A well known problem with denim fabrics is that fabrics obtained from 100% cotton yarns may be quite stiff and rigid. To solve this problem, denim fabrics have been provided with elastic yarns, usually weft yarns, which reduce stiffness of the fabric and improve wearability. These fabrics are called stretch woven fabrics or stretch fabrics. In these stretch fabrics, the elastic yarn provides the elasticity required for the fabric to stretch and to recover the stretched portion. Because the elastic yam is part of the fabric, a usual requirement is that it does not compromise the aspect and the look of the fabric. To this

-3 purpose, the elastic yarns often include a core made of an elastomer and a cover for the core that is made of inelastic fibers, generally cotton fibers, so as to mimic the appearance of a standard, non-elastic, 100% cotton yarn.
[0007] The reference to any prior art in this specification is not, and should not be taken as, an acknowledgement or any form of suggestion that the prior art forms part of the common general knowledge.

-92019100244 07 Mar 2019 [0057] As used herein, “textile” means any cloth, fabric, material or goods produced by for example, weaving, knitting, spreading, bonding, crocheting, knotting or felting. A textile may be produced by spinning raw fibres of wool, flax, cotton, hemp, or other natural or synthetic materials to produce long strands. Textile encompasses fabric and cloth as used in textile assembly trades thereby comprising any material made of interlacing fibres. The term “fabric” may be used in the textile trade to refer to a material that may be used in production of further goods such as, garments. The term “cloth” may be used synonymously with fabric or may be used to refer to a finished piece of fabric used for a specific purpose such as, a table cloth.
[0058] As used herein “yarn” means a long continuous length of interlocked fibres, suitable for use in the production of a textile. Yarn can be made from natural and/or synthetic fibers. A yam may be a spun yam or a filament yam.
[0059] In this specification “weft” means the thread or yam which is drawn through, inserted over-and-under, the lengthwise warp yams to create cloth. A single thread or yarn of the weft, crossing the warp, may be called a pick. Another term for the weft is the fill or the filling yarn. Each individual warp thread in a fabric is called a warp end or end.
[0060] As used in this specification “warp” refers to a yarn or yarns placed lengthwise, crossed by and interlaced with the weft, which form the lengthwise threads in a woven fabric. [0061] Warp is the lengthwise or longitudinal thread or yarn in a roll, while weft is the transverse thread.
[0062] In this specification “denim” refers to a cotton warp-faced textile in which the weft passes under two or more warp threads. Accordingly, textile 100 may be referred to as a denim.
[0063] Denim fabrics may be 5/1, 4/1, 3/1, 2/1, 1/1 or sateen weave fabrics. The number indicates how many connection points there are in the smallest repeat construction unit, or weaving scheme, of warp and weft yarns. That is, 1/1 means that at each connection the warp yarn is changing its position, namely from upside of the weft (face side of the fabric) to the downside of the weft yarn (back side of the fabric). Whereas 2/1 means two up, one down, i.e. the weft is floating under two warps and then changing position from down to up; every three weft insertions the warp yam position is changed once. Similarly, in 3/1 construction every fourth weft insertion there is one warp yam position changing and, in 4/1 every fifth weft insertion the warp yarn changes its position once. When there is a high number of positions without changing, i.e. the longer the weft portion floating under the warp yarns,
-102019100244 07 Mar 2019 the looser and softer are the woven fabrics. As a result, 1/1 weave produces a textile stiffer than a 4/1 weave.
[0064] The weave may comprise a twill weave such as, a 3/1 right hand twill. The weave may comprise a warp-faced twill weave. The warp-faced twill weave may have a predominance of warp yarns on the face. The warp-faced twill weave may be stronger and/or more resistant to abrasion and piling. The strength and resistance may be compared to non warp-faced twill weaves; other weaves; or other textiles.

[0101] Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a type of thermoplastic polyethylene (PE). Also known as high-modulus polyethylene, (HMPE), or highperformance polyethylene (HPPE), it has extremely long chains, with a molecular mass usually between 3.5 and 7.5 million amu (unified atomic mass unit). The longer chain serves to transfer load more effectively to the polymer backbone by strengthening intermolecular interactions. This results in a very tough material, with a high impact strength.

[0126] Another significant advantage of textile 100 and garment 150 is that they provide 360 ° impact, burst and abrasion resistance.
- 18 2019100244 07 Mar 2019 [0127] Textile 100 and garment 150 look like or substantially look like conventional denim and feel like or substantially feel like conventional denim. This may lead to improved compliance and a decrease in injuries.
[0128] Advantageously, textile 100, garment 150 and method 200 utilizes one of the worlds strongest fibers, Dyneema's® Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, in the warp and weft with a denim face.
[0129] Textile 100 and garment 150 wear like denim, it is single layer 104 and all-daywearable, and being ballistic, will retain shape through wash and dry cycle. Textile 100 and garment 150 will never shrink.
[0130] Advantageously, single layer 104 means just that, the inventor has done away with Kevlar and other linings by weaving the textile 100 using a unique double warp beam 102 and blending a very strong fibre, UHMWPE, with cotton. The result is unprecedented strength and comfort.
[0131] Advantageously, by incorporating elastane, the textile 100 and garment 150 of the invention are comfortable and look great at work and outside of work.
[0132] Throughout the specification the aim has been to describe the invention without limiting the invention to any one embodiment or specific collection of features.
