Abstract

A textile comprising a warp face comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE and a weft comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE is disclosed. Also disclosed is a method for manufacturing a textile comprising providing a warp face comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE and a weft comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE and weaving the weft and warp face to thereby manufacture the textile. The warp face and/or weft may comprise a composite of cotton, UHMWPE and elastane. The warp face and/or weft comprise a composite of cotton, UHMWPE, a natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic fibre and elastane. The UHMWPE may comprise DYNEEMA®. The textile may find application in a workwear garment, an outdoor wear garment or an active wear garment.

Description

TEXTILE AND GARMENT COMPRISING A DUAL-WEAVE OF COMPOSITE MATERIALS
FIELD OF THE INVENTION [0001] The present invention relates to a textile and garment comprising a dual-weave of composite materials. In particular, this invention relates to a textile and garment comprising a dual weave of composite materials comprising cotton and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and optionally elastane.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION [0002] Knit fabrics are one of the oldest and maybe the easiest way of producing a fabric. In a knit fabric the yarns make loops around each other, with the looping causing bending which results in softer fabrics that have greater volume than standard woven fabrics. Generally, knit fabrics are much softer and more flexible than woven fabrics. However, the fabric stability or shape retention is not as good as in woven fabrics. Therefore, knit fabrics are used in topswear like jumpers or sweatshirts or t-shirts or for bottoms in more sportive fields like sweatpants due to their softness and comfort.
[0003] A woven fabric is obtained by crossing weft yarns and warp yarns, in a weaving pattern whereby the weft yarns extend over and below one or more warp yarns to provide, with respect to the warp yams, correspondent over portions and under portions.
[0004] Denim is a popular fabric that is produced by weaving weft and warp yarns in a twill design. Denim is a sturdy, cotton warp-faced textile in which the weft passes under two or more warp threads.
[0005] A well known problem with denim fabrics is that fabrics obtained from 100% cotton yams may be quite stiff and rigid. To solve this problem, denim fabrics have been provided with elastic yarns, usually weft yarns, which reduce stiffness of the fabric and improve wearability. These fabrics are called stretch woven fabrics or stretch fabrics. In these stretch fabrics, the elastic yarn provides the elasticity required for the fabric to stretch and to recover the stretched portion. Because the elastic yam is part of the fabric, a usual requirement is that it does not compromise the aspect and the look of the fabric. To this purpose, the elastic yarns often include a core made of an elastomer and a cover for the core that is made of inelastic fibers, generally cotton fibers, so as to mimic the appearance of a standard, non-elastic, 100% cotton yarn.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION [0007] Generally, embodiments of the present invention relate to a textile and a garment comprising a dual weave of composite materials. In a particular embodiment, this invention relates to a textile and garment comprising a dual weave of composite materials comprising cotton and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and optionally one or more of a synthetic or semi-synthetic fibre and elastane. In a more particular embodiment, the textile and garment comprises a warp face comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE and a weft comprising cotton and UHMWPE and optionally one or more a synthetic or semi-synthetic fibre and elastane.
[0008] In a first form, although it need not be the only or indeed the broadest form, the invention resides in a textile comprising:
a warp face comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE; and a weft comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE.
[0009] In a second form, the invention resides in a method for manufacturing a textile comprising:
providing a warp face comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE and a weft comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE; and weaving the weft and warp face to thereby manufacture the textile.
[0010] In a particular embodiment of the first or second forms, the warp face and/or weft may comprise a composite of cotton, UHMWPE and elastane.
[0011] In another particular embodiment of the first or second forms, the warp face and/or weft may comprise a composite of cotton, UHMWPE, a natural, synthetic or semisynthetic fibre and elastane.
[0012] The natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic fibre may comprise a non-elastic technical fibre. The natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic fibre may comprise one or more of polyester; XT-2; modal; Coolmax; Thermolite or an animal fibre. The animal fibre may comprise cashmere or merino.

-3 hand twill. The twill weave may comprise a warp-faced twill weave. The warp-faced twill weave may have a predominance of warp yarns on the face. The warp-faced twill weave may be stronger and/or more resistant to abrasion and piling. The strength and resistance may be compared to non warp-faced twill weaves; other weaves; or other textiles.
[0014] The warp face and/or weft may comprise spun UHMWPE.
[0015] The warp face and/or weft may comprise cotton spun around a UHMWPE fibre. When elastane is present, the warp face and/or weft may comprise, UHMWPE spun yarn spun around an elastane fibre.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION [0055] Embodiments of the present invention relate a textile and garments comprising a dual weave of composite materials. In a particular embodiment, this invention relates to a textile and garment comprising a dual weave of composite materials comprising cotton and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and optionally one or more of a natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic fibre and elastane. In a more particular embodiment, the textile and garment comprises a warp face comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE and a weft comprising cotton and UHMWPE and optionally one or more of a natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic fibre and elastane.

Claims (20)

  1. The Claims defining the invention are as follows:
    1. A textile comprising:
    a warp face comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE; and a weft comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE.
  2. 2. A method for manufacturing a textile comprising:
    providing a warp face comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE and a weft comprising a composite of cotton and UHMWPE; and weaving the weft and warp face to thereby manufacture the textile.
  3. 3. The textile of Claim 1 or the method of Claim 2 wherein the warp face and/or weft comprise a composite of cotton, UHMWPE and elastane.
  4. 4. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein the warp face and/or weft comprise a composite of cotton, UHMWPE, a natural, synthetic or semisynthetic fibre and elastane.
  5. 5. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein the natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic fibre comprise anon-elastic technical fibre.
  6. 6. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein the natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic fibre comprises one or more of polyester; XT-2; modal; Coolmax; Thermolite or an animal fibre.
  7. 7. The textile or method of Claim 6 wherein the animal fibre comprises cashmere or merino.
  8. 8. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein the warp face comprises a 1/1; a 2/1; a 3/1; a 4/1; or a 5/1 weave.
  9. 9. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein twarp face and/or weft comprise spun UHMWPE.
  10. 10. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein the warp face and/or weft comprise cotton spun around a UHMWPE fibre.
  11. 11. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein when elastane is present, the weft and or warp face comprise, UHMWPE spun yarn spun around an elastane fibre.
  12. 12. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein warp face and/or weft comprise 5 to 40 %; 10 to 35 or 15 to 30% lateral stretch.

  13. 13. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein the textile comprises a single layer.
  14. 14. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein the UHMWPE comprises Dyneema®.
  15. 15. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein the textile comprises 50 to 98%; 60 to 95%; or 65 to 92% cotton.
  16. 16. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein the textile comprises 1 to 15%; 2 to 10%; or 3 to 6% UHMWPE.
  17. 17. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein the textile comprises 1 to 35%; 2 to 30%; or 5 to 25% of a natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic fibre.
  18. 18. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein the textile comprises 0.1 to 5%; 0.5 to 2%; or 0.75 to 1.25% elastane.
  19. 19. The textile or method of any one of the previous Claims wherein the textile comprises 90% cotton, 3% UHMWPE, 6% natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic fibre and 1% lycra; 88% cotton, 6% UHMWPE, 5% natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic fibre and 1% lycra; 68% cotton, 6% UHMWPE, 25% natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic fibre and 1% elastane.
  20. 20. The textile or method of Claim 19 wherein the 6% natural, synthetic or semisynthetic fibre is comprised of polyester.
