Abstract

In the transport field, certain safety-sensitive areas such as level crossings are equipped with access-control devices (18) such as barriers and/or signal installations. Control of these access-control devices (18) is automated to the greatest possible extent. Such devices often do not meet the safety requirements, however, if the number of events triggering their use or the frequency of these events exceeds a given level. The aim of the invention is to provide a control method and associated safety device which are practically independent of the number of events, e.g. the passage of trains, triggering their use and the frequency of these events, and thus ensure a high standard of safety. To this end, the access-control devices (18) in the safety area (3) are actuated by a recording device (19) as a function of a number of objects entering a surveillance zone (17) and leaving this zone (17) in accordance with predetermined safety criteria.
