Abstract
The flat railcar has a support frame (4) on bogeys (3) to carry lengths of rail. The rails are loaded onto the car via roller blocks (9) which are mounted on guides (10). The movement of the roller blocks is clamped by shear pins, or by limited torque couplings. If the loaded rail jams in the guides e.g. through a thick weld seam, then the shear coupling breaks and allows the block to move. The moving block is attached by a chain to a safety brake for the rail feed mechanism, to block further loading of the rail in the event of a jammed feed. The railcar is self propelled and has a driving cab at one end. Lateral drives swing the rail lengths into position on the bed of the railcar.
