Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Process for the production of urea from cyanamide.

Treatment of cyanamide with sulfuric acid or other strong mineral acids is known to produce urea, as the cyanamide absorbs water according to the following reaction:
 EMI1.1

 EMI1.2
 the reaction:
 EMI1.3

 EMI1.4

is achieved. A third method is to carry out the conversion even at atmospheric pressure and to keep the solution in circulation through an apparatus or vessel under vacuum, in which part of the water evaporates while binding so much heat that the temperature is somewhat lower goes below the intended reaction temperature, e.g.

   B. up to 450 ° C., after which the solution is returned to the reaction vessel, where it brings about a certain decrease in temperature. Other methods of utilizing the heat of reaction for the purpose of evaporation of part of the water content of the solution while maintaining a practically constant temperature are also possible,
By the method described for cooling the reaction mixture, the reaction can be regulated in a particularly advantageous manner, so that undesired side reactions arise only to a very small extent, and the reaction rolls can be used to concentrate the solution.

In the case of solutions which are 15% strength with regard to cyanamide and 1-maximum with regard to sulfuric acid, the heat of reaction is sufficient to evaporate about 20% of the water content possible and the reaction is carried out completely in about 5 phases.

When the reaction is almost complete and most of the cyanamide has been converted, the heat generation becomes small, so that it may be necessary to supply heat from the outside in order to maintain the reaction temperature.

   PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A process for the production of urea from cyanamide in the presence of a mineral acid, characterized in that the heat of reaction developed during the conversion, to the extent that it is developed, is used for a controlled evaporation of part of the water in solution.
