selected that this wire lies within the groove 2 on the sleeve 2 in the rest position of the pinion.
When the motor is switched on, the pinion moves to the right from the position shown in FIG. I and finally comes into engagement with the flywheel. If the machine to be started is running under its own power, the pinion disengages and returns to the idle position.
When the pinion is shifted to the right, the wire 10 hits the shoulder 2c of the sleeve 2 and as a result of this impact against the shoulder the wire will be bent slightly, as shown in FIG. However, the displacement is very slight and does not make the longitudinal displacement of the pinion caused by rotation of the sleeve 2 difficult. The parts are then in the position illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4. However, if the pinion has shifted so that the wire has completely left the smooth part of the sleeve, the wire enters the screw threads and is no longer in contact with the shaft. This is shown in FIGS. 5 and 6.
It can be seen from the above that the endeavor of the pinion to shift when the shaft is vibrated is resisted by the wire, the more so when this wire then comes into contact with the shoulder 2c. The engagement of the wire on the Schulser 2c is sufficient to prevent the pinion from creeping and to make the exit of the wire from the groove 2b impossible. When the starting device is in operation, however, the holding device no longer engages the sleeve and therefore does not in any way interfere with the deliberately brought about longitudinal displacement of the pinion.
The sudden rotation of the screw sleeve when the motor is turned on gives the pinion an impulse which rotates the wire beyond the shoulder 2c, and as a result of this impulse the resistance that the shoulder opposes the wire is less.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 9, the distance between the wire and the pinion is selected so that when the pinion is moved longitudinally on the screw part, the wire rides on the ridge of the thread, and this wire itself can then be at a small angle to the transverse plane of the Ritzels be misplaced.
