Process for the production of lighter resin solutions from waste sulfuric acid that can be used as paints or as an additive to paints.
The so-called waste acid that falls off during the cleaning of the light oils of the coal tar with sulfuric acid picks up certain impurities from the oils to be cleaned, which under the influence of the sulfuric acid undergo a more or less extensive reaction and thereby form resin-like products. The purpose of the present invention is to obtain these resinous products in a form in which they can be used both as lacquer bodies themselves and in particular as drying additives to other lacquer bodies, in particular to coumarone resin lacquer. It is essential here that the resin bodies are obtained from the waste acid in as light a condition as possible, since otherwise their use as varnish or varnish siccative is out of the question.
According to the present invention, the resinous constituents of the waste sulfuric acid are obtained in a relatively pale state by taking them up in benzene hydrocarbons. The acid is removed from the resin constituents in a known manner by adding water, whereby it is only necessary to ensure that the heat of dissolution of the sulfuric acid in water does not heat the reaction mass to such an extent that the resin bodies are detrimentally darkened.
The specific gravity of the resin solution must always be smaller than that of the dilute acid so that it does not sink or mix with the dilute acid and form inseparable suspensions. The resin solution in the benzene hydrocarbons can be added directly to resin lacquers and then has a beneficial effect on the drying of the lacquer coats, especially if the lacquer was prepared with coumarone. The resin bodies can also be isolated from the solvent and then recovered in the form of a light yellow powder.
The light color of the resin powder obtained depends on the fact that the solvent consists of benzene hydrocarbons whose boiling point is so low that when the solvent is driven off, no destructive reactions of the resin, which are associated with a dark color, occur. The powder can also be used as an additive to paints and then also has a drying effect, especially on coumarone resin paints.
