Verfahren zur Elektrolyse von Alkali-oder Erdalkalichloriden.
EMI1.1

Process for the electrolysis of alkali or alkaline earth chlorides.
EMI1.1
lets progress. Since the hydroxyl ions form oxygen at the anode when they are discharged, this process not only reduces the yield, but also strongly attacks the anodes, which are usually made of carbon.
In order to counter the migration of the hydroxyl ions, it has already been recommended to use a so-called filter diaphragm as a diaphragm, which is easily permeable to the electrolyte, and through this a constant salt solution from the anode chamber to the cathode chamber, i.e. in the opposite direction to the migration of hydroxyl ions, to run through. At a certain flow rate through the diaphragm, it is actually possible to hold back some of the opposing hydroxyl ions in the cathode compartment.
The effect of such a filter diaphragm is, however, still insufficient because of the unequal size of the filter pores and the resulting different diffusion speed of the liquid at the different points of the filter, which is why other aids have been used at the same time to prevent the penetration of hydroxyl ions, especially with higher alkali concentration, to be further prevented if possible.
For example, it has been suggested to wash the cathode liquor immediately with water
EMI1.2
convert and so reduce the hydroxyl ion concentration or to emulsify the alkali droplets forming on the cathode with non-conductive mineral oil and so the other
EMI1.3
To avoid anolyte, the anode chamber is continuously rinsed with fresh saline solution.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. Process for the electrolysis of alkali or alkaline earth chlorides, characterized in that a system of two or more vertical filter diaphragms is used through which the electrolyte flows in the same direction, from the anode to the cathode.
