Description

Method of accelerating the vulcanization of natural or artificial
Rubbers.
It has been found that the vulcanization of natural or synthetic rubbers can be accelerated significantly if a small amount of piperidine or its homologues, such as methylpiperidine, is added to the masses to be vulcanized.
The accelerating effect of the bases mentioned makes it possible on the one hand to use a shorter vulcanization time than has been customary up to now, and on the other hand to work at low temperatures with constant vulcanization time.
It is noteworthy that other basic substances, such as pyridine, quinoline, dimethyl a hn, etc., are unable to exert this remarkable effect.
The accelerating effect of the bases can be followed more closely by determining the sulfur absorption that occurs during vulcanization.
Example l.
HXI parts of para rubber are vulcanized with 10 parts of sulfur and 0.5 parts of piperidine at 135 to 1450 (31/2 atm.) For 15 minutes. This gives a well-vulcanized product that contains around 3,300 bound sulfur. Without the piperidine added, the process takes about an hour. If the para rubber is replaced by synthetic isoprene rubber, a similar result is obtained.

Example 4.
100 parts of ss- γ-dimethylbutadiene rubber are vulcanized with 40 parts of sulfur and 0.75 parts of piperidine at about 155 (5 to 6 atmospheres). A product is obtained after 2 hours,
