Process for the production of stainless steel.

The present invention relates to a new process for the production of stainless steel by clarifying under vacuum. It is known that molten steel is improved if it is given the opportunity to separate the gases and slag constituents present in it, and that this separation or clarification can be accelerated considerably if the liquid steel is exposed to a vacuum. In the known methods, the steel clarification vessels are placed in a vacuum chamber for this purpose, the inlet opening is hermetically sealed and the chambers are evacuated.

According to the findings of the present invention, it is essential that the steel is protected as far as possible against cooling during this clarification period so that it retains its thin liquid as long as possible. This protection against heat losses or the compensation of inevitable heat losses during the time of clarification is now achieved according to the present invention in that the inner surfaces of the evacuated container with a heat-insulating layer that can be heated to the melting temperature of the metal to be clarified, e.g. B. fireclay is lined, which layers are heated high, advantageously up to the melting temperature of the metal, before clarifying.

Although in the known clarification under vacuum, the vacuum itself offers considerable protection against heat losses, it is nevertheless necessary to compensate for or replace the inevitable losses of heat. The highly heated layers inside the vacuum chambers now act as sensitively regulating heat stores and prevent the formation of a doughy layer in the hair vessels that thwart the effect of the vacuum.

The method according to the present invention thus takes place in the following way:
The inner surfaces of the vacuum chamber, which is known per se and is provided with the necessary devices for evacuation and closure, is covered with a fire-resistant, heat-insulating layer. B. chamotte, lined. Then they are dressed
Surfaces heated to high temperatures, advantageously up to the melting temperature of the steel, and then the filled clarifying vessels are brought into the vacuum chamber, closed and the chamber is evacuated in a known manner and kept in an evacuated state.
