Process for making ductile tungsten metal.

The conditions under which the otherwise brittle tungsten metal becomes ductile have recently been determined. This state is achieved through the following operations: Powdered tungsten is pressed into rods under high pressure. These rods are charged with high currents for the purpose of sintering and then subjected to mechanical processing. The material prepared in this way can be drawn into the finest wires at high temperatures.

If one could start from previously melted tungsten rods, then, due to the dense nature of the starting material, the machinability would be influenced very favorably, but there are insurmountable technical difficulties
 EMI1.1

The present invention aims at the manufacture of tungsten rods. the structural properties of which come closest to that of molten tungsten and achieve this goal in that the tungsten body pressed from powder is exposed to the highest possible pressure during the sintering process, i.e. in the softening state.

An example embodiment of this method consists in compressing the tungsten powder in a cylinder on the insulating material or made of metal!) With insulating filtering, while at the same time heating it to bright white heat by means of an electric current.

Due to the simultaneous sintering and pressing process, with pressures from 3000 to 5000 kg
 EMI1.2
Toichpn promoted to a very dense body. This gives the metal a beselia affinity that makes it extremely suitable for further processing.

Pressing and sintering can also be combined with hammering, so that all
