Process for the preparation of durable hydro8ulfites.

In the additional patent No. 21319 to the patent No. 21088 a process for the preparation of durable hydrosulfites free of water of crystallization is described, characterized in that the water of crystallization-containing salts of hydrosulphurous acid in solid Fox m or as pastes with high-percentage alkali or solid alkali is expediently at a higher temperature treated. Further developments of this process are described in Znsatzpatents No. 23355 and No. 29815.

It has now been shown that hydrosulfites free of water of crystallization can also be obtained if ammonia is used in whole or in part instead of the alkali metal hydroxide solution used in the patents mentioned, without evaporation. If one starts out other than the alkali metal salts and no alkali is present, alkali metal salts are added at the same time in order to enable the formation of alkali metal salts. Such an addition of alkali or ammonium salts can under certain circumstances also be expedient when using alkali hydrosulfite.
 EMI1.1
containing sodium hydrosulfite has been converted into the water-free one. After the mother liquor has been separated off, this is dried in the usual way by filtration or the like.

   Example II.

1000 parts alcoholic paste of sodium hydrosulphite containing water of crystallization,
 EMI1.2
further work-up takes place as known.
EXAMPLE I III.
 EMI1.3
Water in which 100 parts of common salt or chlorammonium are dissolved, stirred, saturated with ammonia gas and heated from 7/3 to 35 to 400 while passing through it until hydrosulphite free of crystalline water has formed. Work as in example 1.

   Example IV.

   In 150 l ammonia with a specific gravity of 0 # 915 (216 g NHB per liter)
 EMI1.4
1/4 hour at 35 to 40, whereupon the anhydrous sodium hydrosulfite formed is filtered off with suction and dried in the usual way.

   Example V.

In: 2011 l concentrated ammonia with a specific gravity of 0 # 910, 70 kg of table salt are stirred in. 200 kg of zinc hydrosulfite double salt are gradually introduced into this mixture and ammonia gas is then passed in until it is saturated. The mixture is then stirred for a further 1 hour at 35 to 40, until the formation of the anhydrous hydrosulfite has ended.
