Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Process for the preparation of rubber, its homologues and analogues.

The surprising observation was made that the metals of the alkali and alkaline earth series or their mixtures, alloys or amalgams are able to polymerize butadiene, its homologues and analogues, without significant by-products, to give rubber substances with particularly valuable properties, even at ordinary temperature.

   Example l.

0.5 parts of sodium wire are pressed into 100 parts of butadiene that has been compressed by vigorous cooling. The reaction vessel is carefully closed and then left to stand for a day. After this time, the vessel is opened, the sodium, which is tightly surrounded by the butadiene rubber, is destroyed by alcohol or water and the resulting butadiene rubber is rolled out in the known manner to form a fur.

   Example 2.

If the sodium wire is replaced in Example 1 by 10 parts of 10% sodium amalgam and left to stand for several days, butadiene chewing is also obtained.

   Example 3.

3 parts of sodium tape are added to 100 parts of isoprene; the reaction vessel is closed and left to stand for some time. A thick layer of rubber has then deposited around the sodium band, which can be processed in a known manner after the sodium has been removed.

   Example 4.

If the isoprene is replaced by 100 parts -y-dimethylerythrene and the sodium by 1 part calcium in Example 3, the result is the known methyl rubber with an analogous treatment.

Instead of the hydrocarbons mentioned in the examples,
 EMI1.1
Examples mentioned means andrro alkali or alkaline earth metals, z. B. calcium or mixtures such as calcium sodium or other amalgams such as. B. Use ammonium amalgam.

The course of the polymerization is of course accelerated even further by the application of heat.
