voller Umwandlung 35% betragen sollte.
Vorteile.Process for the thermal decomposition of carnallite in the presence of water vapor It is known that when carnallite or carnallitic potassium salts are heated in the water vapor from the magnesium chloride of these salts, hydrogen chloride escapes, so that a mixture of potassium chloride with magnesium oxide remains, which gives the residue an alkaline reaction and a basic quality granted. Also when potassium salts containing magnesium sulphate are heated with the addition of calcium chloride, potash salts with a basic reaction can be produced in the same way as a result of the conversion of magnesium sulphate and calcium chloride to calcium sulphate and magnesium chloride. In both cases, however, the reaction of the potassium salt with the steam proceeds only slowly, so that, even after several hours of heating, the reaction of the potassium salt has only progressed to half the extent possible. When pure carnallite was heated in flowing steam at around q.oo ° C, z. B, achieved only after several hours, a Magnesiumoxydgehalt of 1 5% while the content should be at full conversion 35%. In order to accelerate the reaction and to make the reaction with the steam more complete, it has already been proposed that metallic contact substances, such as finely divided iron, be added to the carnallitic potassium salts before they are heated in the steam. The inventor has now found that a conversion of the carnallitic potash salts, which corresponds almost to the theory, can be carried out relatively quickly by heating in steam if the potash salt subjected to the treatment is comminuted as often as possible. The same thing was achieved in a simple mechanical way, which can be achieved according to the known method by admixing metallic contact substances. However, the mechanical route has various advantages over the chemical route mentioned. When contact materials are used, the residue from the steam treatment of the potassium salts is contaminated with metal hydroxides, which reduce its potassium content and its suitability for fertilization purposes. Such a decrease in value does not occur when the conversion of carnallite is accelerated by mechanical means. For other purposes, the use of the basic residue from the steam treatment of the potassium salts is made impossible or very difficult due to the content of metal hydroxides. This is z. B. the case @ when treating the basic residue with nitric acid to produce potassium nitrate. For this purpose, too, the acceleration and intensification of the reaction between the potassium salts and water vapor by mechanical means has quite considerable advantages.
dar.The treatment of the potash salts with steam according to the new process
thus represents a remarkable technical and economic progress

Man
For the purpose of the repeated crushing of the potassium salt this is necessary
Heating in steam - of course not to be interrupted every time. Man
the steam treatment in tubular mill-like apparatus can be used with the comminution
unite. The beneficial effect of the method is evident from the following exemplary embodiment
to see.
9,8 0/0 Mg 0 mal erhitzt 4mal erhitzt 17,4 04 Mg() 29,I°%Mg0
Zerkleinerung ist somit recht bedeutend.100 g of pure carnallite were heated in a porcelain tube on an incinerator while superheated steam was passed over them for one hour - including heating - at 35o °. The product obtained from the tube was then ground in a mortar and subjected to a second heating in the same way. The product was then ground again and heated again until crushing was done three times. After each heating, a small sample of the products was examined for its magnesium oxide content by heating with excess normal hydrochloric acid and titrating back the unused excess acid. It arose in this case the following values: i times 2 times heated heated 3,711 / 0m90 9.8 0/0 Mg 0 times heated 4 times heated 17.4 04 Mg () 29, I °% Mg0 joined with each successive crushing and heating in the vapor stream thereafter a significant increase in the magnesium oxide content. That this increase was to be ascribed to repeated comminution and not to repeated heating is evident from the counter-experiment in which a product with only 11.40 / 0 magnesium oxide was obtained with the same but uninterrupted heating time. The success of the repeated crushing is therefore quite significant.
