<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Device for joining a layer of polyurethane foam to a layer of another material
The invention relates to a device for joining a layer of polyurethane foam with a layer of another material, with a drum, an elongated heating gas nozzle which extends essentially over the entire width of the drum, and a pressing device directly downstream of the heating device.
The device is provided in particular to heat the layer made of polyurethane foam for the purpose of bonding with a layer made of another material. The requirements for heating polyurethane foam are different from those for heating other materials for joining them together.
It has previously been proposed to heat the surface of inorganic materials, for example glass, on a flat table by means of a flame in order to prepare the glass for connection with another, organic or inorganic material.
The special and unusual requirements for heating polyurethane foam are that the foam has to be heated quickly, within a fraction of a second, to a high temperature, around 550 ° C. A direct flame fed by a combustible gas has been found to be theoretically and practically useful.
If the polyurethane foam is heated to a high temperature, it decomposes and the top layer is "burned off". The residue from this burn-off, the decomposition product, only remains sticky and tough for a short while.
A further requirement for the layering of polyurethane foam is therefore that the other material, for example the textile material, must be brought into contact with the heated surface of the polyurethane foam within a fraction of a second. It should be noted that the decomposition product of the polyurethane does not have any harmful effect on any textile material, despite the high temperature to which the surface of the foam was heated fractions of a second beforehand.
It has now surprisingly been found that the stated requirements can be met if the polyurethane foam is passed over a rotating drum and both heating and contact with the other material take place while the polyurethane foam is still on the drum.
The device according to the invention is therefore characterized in that the pressing device consists of two rollers arranged close to the drum, the first roller, viewed in the direction of rotation of the drum, being arranged just after the heating gas nozzle and the second roller, in the direction of rotation of the drum, being at an angular distance after the first roller and that the opening of the nozzle designed as a gas burner is directed approximately perpendicular to the drum.
Another feature of the invention is that the angular distance between the two rollers in the direction of rotation of the drum is at least 1800.
This ensures that the common running distance of the layers around the drum is even
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
if extends over at least 180 degrees of arc of the outer surface of the drum.
That arrangement has proven to be particularly advantageous in which both stages, the heating of the
The layer of polyurethane foam and the contact between the two materials take place while the layer of polyurethane foam runs essentially vertically on the drum.
In order to achieve this goal, an embodiment of the device according to the invention is characterized in that the axis of the first roller is arranged approximately at the height of the axis of the drum and that the opening of the heating gas nozzle is directed to the area of the jacket surface extending in the direction of rotation of the drum in front of the first roller the drum is directed.
For a better understanding, the invention is described in more detail below with reference to the drawings. 1 is a schematic elevation of a device according to the invention, with some parts being shown in section for the purpose of clear illustration, FIG. 2 a plan view of the device according to FIG. 1 and FIG. 3 a vertical section through the burner for the Heating the surface of the layer of polyurethane foam along the line nI-ill in FIG. 2.
A feedweaize --8-- for a polyurethane foam layer --5-- is arranged in the immediate vicinity of the upper guide roller-10--, which is mounted on a transverse shaft rotatably in the uprights --3-- above the roller - -8 - --11-- is mounted. The polyurethane foam layer --5-- is placed between the roller --10-- and a drum - 6-- by an adjustable one acting on the roller --10--
Retarder held under suitable tension. In this embodiment, the deceleration device is in the form of a brake drum -12- attached to one end of the shaft -11- and a brake band -13- is on one on the frame of the device mounted bracket - -14-- attached.
The other free-hanging end of the belt is provided with a variable weight --15-- so that the retarding friction effect on the roller --10-- can be varied as required.
On the way from the roller --10-- to the drum --6--, the polyurethane foam layer - advantageously through an edge guide and wide tensioning device --16-- is guided around the
To align the edges exactly and to stretch the layer a little laterally.
According to Fig. 2, the polyurethane foam layer --5-- is moved by inclined rollers --17-- a precision guide device in a zone 18 - which extends from the rollers 17 to the edge rollers 19 of the guide device , stretched outwards.
The drum is mounted on a transverse shaft --20-- which is rotatably mounted in the side frame parts -21-- of the upper platform --1-- The drum --6-- is driven by an electric motor - -22-- via a speed reducing device --23--. A drive belt --24--, which runs over the pulley --25-- of the speed reduction device and the larger pulley --26-- attached to the shaft - 20--, establishes the drive connection between the motor and the drum .
The drum --6-- is preferably cooled, for example by having a cooling liquid, such as water, circulate in it through devices not shown in order to prevent the temperature in the drum from rising too much. If desired, the temperature of the cooling liquid can be regulated by a thermostat.
The underlay or reinforcement layer --7-- is fed by a feed roller --28-- which is mounted on a shaft --29-- rotatably mounted between the uprights --4--. From the roller - the layer --7-- runs upwards and partly around a horizontal guide roller --30-- which is rotatably mounted in the frame on the platform --1--. From the roller --30-- the layer runs - horizontally to a second guide roller --31--, which is also rotatably mounted between the sides of the platform-l.
For reasons given later, the roller --31-- is preferably mounted in such a way that its surface facing the Tormmel --6-- is kept at a distance from the surface of the drum --6-- which is at least slightly greater than that Thicknesses of layers --5 and 7- together.
The layer --7 - is stretched in a suitable manner in the longitudinal direction on its way from the roller --30 - to the drum - 6 - and around it. This tensioning is brought about by a delay device, which consists of a brake drum --32-- fastened to the shaft --33-- that carries the roller --30-- and a brake band --34-- which is suitably loaded and which is connected to the brake drum --32-- is engaged.

When joining a 0.018 cm thick nylon tricot material with a 0.32 cm thick polyurethane foam, an excellent result was achieved at a speed of about 13.7 m / min with the center of the burner at a minimum distance of 12.7 cm from the surface of the drum and the "effective distance" from the polyurethane material was 1.27 cm, the "effective distance" being defined as the distance from the tip of the blue inner flame cone.
Under the above conditions, a change in the temperature caused by a change in the air pressure in the burner led to the following changes in the bond strength and - as a result of the burning - the thickness of the polyurethane foam layer:
