<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Apparatus and method for grinding the brake disk face of a disk brake
For a disc brake to function properly, the brake disc must have smooth surfaces, i.e. H. these surfaces must be free of rust and other unevenness that may arise during operation. To eliminate such unevenness, it is usually necessary to remove the brake disks so that the surfaces against which the brake pads are pressed can be turned. Such an expansion, however, means a considerable installation effort. It has already been suggested (see French
Patent Specification No. 1,352,248) to jack up the vehicle and grind the exposed brake disks of the disc brakes on their end faces using a grinding wheel that can be pressed on according to the desired degree of abrasion. However, this also requires considerable assembly effort.
The object of the invention is to create a device and a method with which, while avoiding extensive assembly work, the braking surfaces of the brake disc can be ground off to the required extent and / or rust and unevenness can be removed. The device according to the invention is characterized in that it has a plate made of sheet steel or the like, on which an emery block is attached by means of gluing, and that it has essentially the dimensions of the brake pad of the disc brake consisting of the retaining plate and brake lining and recesses Od. The like. Which are used for axially displaceable attachment in the fixed housing (fixed caliper) of the disc brake.
These recesses in the device according to the invention correspond to the recesses in the retaining plate of the brake pad, so that the same type of fastening that is used for attaching the brake pad in the so-called fixed caliper of the disc brake can also be used to fasten the device according to the invention.
As emery material that is glued to the plate, z. B. so-called normal corundum can be used with a grain size corresponding to the requirements. This emery material is bound by synthetic resin in a manner known per se. A plastic adhesive that is heat-resistant up to 2200 C is used as the adhesive.
The plate carrying the emery block can be formed by a conventional holding plate provided for the brake lining of a brake pad of a disc brake. This holding plate is attached axially movably in the usual way between the brake piston and the braking surface of the disc facing it.
The method according to the invention for grinding the brake disc face of a disc brake using the device according to the invention consists in removing the brake pad of the disc brake and replacing it with the plate together with the emery block, whereupon the brake disc face is abraded by actuating the brake several times while driving. Naturally, two plates and an emery block are used on both sides of the brake disc instead of the brake pads, which can be done relatively easily, since the brake pads are usually housed in the fixed caliper in such a way that they can be replaced with very little installation effort. This saves considerable assembly time.
It is also advantageous
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
that the actual grinding process can be carried out while the vehicle is in motion, so that the next vehicle can be provided with the plates according to the invention including an emery block at the assembly stand while the preceding vehicle is still on the move. Practical tests have shown that it is often possible to clean the brake discs sufficiently by briefly pressing the brake over a travel distance of around 200 m. This process is repeated if necessary, whereby it must be ensured that no excessive heat development occurs.
An exemplary embodiment of the device according to the invention is shown schematically in the drawings. FIG. 1 shows the device in a plan view of the emery surface, whereas FIG. 2 shows a cross section to FIG.
The plate 1, which is made of sheet steel, has two recesses 2 by means of which it can be mounted in the fixed caliper of the disc brake so that it can be displaced in the axial direction of the brake piston.
An emery block 3 is attached to the plate 1 by means of an adhesive layer 4.
The shape of the plate 1 can be changed if necessary to allow an axially displaceable attachment of the device in disc brakes in which differently designed parts are provided in the fixed caliper instead of the roughly rectangular cross-section components for holding the retaining plate of the brake pad.
The emery block consists of conventional emery material, e.g. B. Corundum. When selecting the emery material, care must be taken to ensure that the emery block 3 has sufficient strength against the mechanical stresses that occur when the emery block is pressed by the brake cylinder.
