<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Device for closing the tap in inflatable crucibles or other metallurgical furnaces. The invention relates to a device for closing the tap in inflatable crucibles or other metallurgical furnaces in which the tap is not touched by the metal bath or the slag during the melting process. Crucibles with a tapping hole have the advantage that the floating slag can largely be retained when the crucible is tapped, which is advantageous both for the steel that is produced and for the next batch. The retention of a final liquid slag is e.g. B. useful for dephosphorization, the iron content of the final slag can be partially recovered in the next batch.
However, the presence of a tap opening has the disadvantage that not only does a flame burn out through it during the refining process, but also slag and metal splashes can be ejected. Another disadvantage of the always open tapping is that when the crucible is tilted, the slag first reaches the inner opening of the tapping channel and therefore only slag flows off during the time when the slag cover of the batch is in contact with this tapping channel the pouring ladle below gets into it, so that a really clean slag tapping is not possible.
There is therefore a need to keep the slag tapping opening of the crucible under lock and key for those times during which ejection and slag can pass through, i.e. during the refining process and up to that point in time when the floating slag reaches the inner end of the crucible when it is tipped Has crossed tapping channel.
It would now be easy to create a closure with the tap hole closure machines commonly used in blast furnaces or cupola furnaces in a corresponding modification, but this would mean that one would have to break out the hard-burnt clay plug piece by piece before tapping in order to get the opening free, which of course in the Converter operation with its short batch sequences is out of the question.
The invention aims to create a simple device by means of which a temporary closure can be attached to the converter tap using a conventional plugging compound, as is also used in blast furnaces, which can withstand the stresses mentioned without further ado and is automatically ejected by the steel to be poured as soon as the the steel column above has reached a certain height. In this way, there is no ejection during the blowing process and the steel can really be poured without slag.
Stuffing rods have already become known which at their front end have a plug of plugging compound which can be inserted into the tapping channel. The plug is stripped off the rod end by a sliding plate. A fitting of the stuffing compound under compression cannot be achieved with such devices. Therefore the closure is unreliable and unsafe.
The device according to the invention, which is easier to handle and a much larger one
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Security is guaranteed, consists in the fact that the rod carrying the plug made of plugging compound is guided in a tube, at one end of which a pressure plate is attached, and that an end plate is attached by a shear pin to the end of the rod protruding from the tube Between the end plate and the pressure plate, the plug made of plugging compound is arranged, which plug is plugged after being inserted into the tapping channel by pulling back the rod while upsetting it.
Appropriately, a handle is attached to the other end of the rod carrying the plug made of plugging compound, which is movable in a longitudinal slot of the tube in its axial direction.
The longitudinal movement of the rod within the tube can be effected by hand or by hydraulic or pneumatic aids.
The end plate must of course have a slightly smaller diameter than the tapping opening or the tapping channel so that it and thus the plugging compound can be pushed into the tapping channel without difficulty.
When the rod is withdrawn, the shear pin breaks. The degree of compression of the plugging compound can be regulated by a suitable choice of the dimensions of the shear pin, whereby the durability of the plug can also be influenced.
The invention is shown schematically in the drawing. Therein, 1 denotes the tapping of the crucible and 2 denotes the tapping nozzle in the crucible jacket. The device according to the invention consists of the rod 3 carrying the plug made of plugging compound which is guided in a longitudinally displaceable manner in the tube 4, at one end of which a pressure plate 5 is undetachably attached. At this end, the rod 3 carries the end plate 6, which is secured by means of a shear pin 7.
The stuffing compound 8 is introduced between the end plate and the pressure plate. The other end of the rod 3 carries a handle 9 which can be moved in a slot in the tube 4. A shoulder support 10 is attached to this end of the tube 4, by means of which the device according to the invention can be pressed on for tapping.
The function of the device is simple:
The crucible is tilted into a position in which its tapping can be reached with the device from the platform. The rod is roughly pre-formed with a stuffing compound between the end plate and the pressure plate, and the end of the rod together with the end plate and the stuffing material is pressed against the tapping nozzle by the pressure plate. Then the handle 9 is manually switched on, whereby a corresponding leverage can be switched on - withdrawn, whereby the plug of plugging compound between the end plate and pressure plate is compressed and pressed against the wall of the tapping channel, u. between until the shear pin breaks.
The device can then be easily withdrawn, since the compressed stuffing compound only covers a very small piece of the rod and the compound is still soft.
Experience has shown that the small hole that remains after pulling out the rod swells almost completely, so that a relatively tight, but not too tight tapping seal is created, which reliably prevents sputum from getting out through the tapping, and is also impermeable to slag when pouring the batch , but is easily pierced by steel.
