<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Seating that can be converted into a bed
The invention relates to a piece of seating furniture which can be converted into a bed, the backrest of which can be pivoted by means of arms articulated on the furniture frame or the seat cushion. In known furniture of this type, these arms are only used to convert the furniture into the sitting or lying position. Furniture of this type has become known in which the furniture frame and the back cushion on each
EMI1.1
have the purpose of swiveling the seat and back cushions and moving them forward at the same time when converting the furniture into reclining furniture.
Other seating furniture equipped with arms has also become known, and with all these pieces of furniture, unless they are provided with armrests on the side, it is often felt to be a disadvantage that when the furniture is used as a bed, bed heads are missing to prevent the bedding from falling Furthermore, give the person lying down a comfortable feeling of security.
The invention has set itself the goal of eliminating this deficiency and achieves this in a piece of furniture of the type mentioned at the outset in that the arms protrude upward over the lying surface in the lying position of the piece of furniture as the head of the bed. The arms according to the invention are therefore used both as swivel arms and as bed heads.
According to a further feature of the invention, the arms also cover the space behind the backrest in the seated position of the furniture and thus fulfill a threefold task.
Further features and advantages of the invention are described in more detail below using two exemplary embodiments shown in the drawings. 1 shows one example in the sitting position, FIG. 2 in the lying position, FIG. 3 again in the sitting position, and FIG. 4 in the lying position the other embodiment.
According to FIGS. 1 and 2, the piece of furniture has a seat cushion 1 and a back cushion 2. The latter is hinged on both sides at 3 to a swing arm 4 which is rotatably mounted at its other end at 5 on the seat cushion 1 or on the furniture frame. As can be seen from FIG. 1, the shape of the arms 4 in the seated position of the furniture means that the arms 4 laterally cover the space behind the back cushion 2, resting on stops 6 attached to the furniture frame. Feet 7 are attached to the rear of the back cushion 2.
When the furniture is transformed into the lying position, the arms 4 and thus the back cushion are pivoted in the direction of the arrow P, the arms finally resting against stops 8 and the feet 7 being supported on the floor when the back cushion is pivoted further. As can be seen from Fig. 2, the arms 4 protrude in the lying position of the furniture over the lying surface formed by the seat cushion 1 and the back cushion 2 upwards and form the head and feet of the furniture.
In the embodiment according to FIGS. 3 and 4, in which the same reference numerals as in FIG. 1 are used for the same parts, only the seat cushion 1 is used as a lying surface, so that the back cushion 2 can be kept thinner. The back cushion 2 is also used to support the arms 4 '

pulled up on the ground. In this exemplary embodiment, a board also extends between the arms 4 ', by means of which the space behind the back cushion 2' is also covered upwards in the seating position of the furniture. The board 9 is attached to the back cushion by means of a hinge 10 so that it can be folded down in the lying position and can be used as a shelf.
In the sitting position of the piece of furniture it rests on stops 11 which are arranged on the inside of the arms 4 ′. To facilitate access to the bed, the board could also be divided (indicated by the dashed line 12 in FIG. 4), so that only one part is placed horizontally as a shelf, the other part approximately perpendicular.
In this exemplary embodiment, too, as shown in FIG. 4, the arms 4 ′ in the lying position of the piece of furniture form the head of the bed by protruding over the lying surface.
Of course, the invention is in no way restricted to the exemplary embodiments shown; rather, the invention can be implemented in extremely diverse forms.
