Process for the production of paraformaldehyde from formaldehyde
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of readily soluble paraformaldehyde, which is found in
Pearl shape is obtained.
Paraformaldehyde is generally produced by dehydrating aqueous formaldehyde solutions. This dehydration can be done by applying vacuum or by distillation with organic
Liquids which result in low-boiling azeotropic mixtures with water are carried out. Other processes involve partial condensation of formaldehyde vapors.
When this process is carried out, a product is obtained in the first dehydration stage, the so-called "formaldehyde pre-concentrate", the formaldehyde content of which is about 70% by weight and more. The pre-concentrate is at the temperatures at which it is formed, u. between 700 C, an easily mobile, depending on its formaldehyde content, more or less clear melt. If it is cooled to room temperature, then, depending on the formaldehyde content, a more or less slightly viscous, gelatinous to solid opaque mass is obtained; but this mass cannot simply be melted again.
If the production of paraformaldehyde from the pre-concentrate is carried out in such a way that the further dehydration process to be carried out is carried out using higher temperatures, greater formaldehyde losses occur. This is also the case when the liquid pre-concentrate, as is customary in the production of paraformaldehyde in flake form, is run over rotating cooling rollers on which the mass solidifies into a plastic film and can then be scraped off.
US Pat. No. 2,704,765 describes a process for the preparation of paraformaldehyde, according to which a vaporous mixture of 60 to 90% by weight of formaldehyde with inert diluents, e.g. B. water vapor, methanol, methane and / or carbon oxides is introduced into an organic liquid which serves as a cooling medium and which contains a basic or an acidic substance as a condensation catalyst. In this case, the paraformaldehyde is obtained as a pulpy mass that still has to be subjected to an intensive drying process.
A process for the production of paraformaldehyde has now been found, when carried out a product in bead form of high solubility and high reactivity is obtained. The process is characterized in that an aqueous formaldehyde solution is concentrated to 70 to 85% by weight in a manner known per se and the resulting melt is then introduced in the form of a thin jet into an organic liquid which is inert to formaldehyde and which moves in turbulent motion and its temperature is at least 500 C below the temperature of the melt to be introduced.
The paraformaldehyde is obtained in the form of small pearls by introducing the pre-concentrate into the stirred inert cooling liquid, the boiling point of which should preferably be below 1200 ° C., in a thin stream, preferably under moderate excess pressure. For example, the coolant is
