worden.

been. The mercaptans and thiosides are only very weakly acidic and therefore do not have a damaging effect on the skin substance, in which they differ from the acids, namely acetic acid, and from the sulfur compounds which are formed in the known processes. The excess of mercaptan and the possible sulfur compounds also seem to act as a solvent on the substance that binds the gowebs fibers of the skin, causing the skins to "fall".

The alcoholic fermentation brought about by this procedure greatly reduces the risk of destruction of the skin substance compared to the known method, while on the other hand the undesired and harmful substances are removed from the skins. It also appears that some reaction takes place between the lime and the glucose, which forms an embodiment. The use of unpleasant, harmful and expensive excrement previously used to clean the skins is made completely superfluous by the new method.

   PATENT CLAIMS:
1. Process for treating hides, characterized in that the hides are soaked in a bath of sulfur and a fermenting carbohydrate.
