Process for the polymerization of vinyl chloride
The present invention relates to a new process for the polymerization of vinyl chloride and the polymers obtained by this process, in which process use is made of new catalysts which are particularly effective and allow the polymerization of vinyl chloride at low temperatures under atmospheric pressure.
The process according to the invention consists in that the vinyl chloride is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst which consists of a mixture of a silver salt and an organic antimony compound of the general formula SbR3, where R is an alkyl radical.
The total amount of the constituents of the catalytic mixture used is expediently of the order of magnitude from 0.5 to 3% by weight, based on the monomer to be polymerized. The amount of silver nitrate in the catalytic mixture. is advantageously between 25 and 50% by weight of the amount of the organic antimony compound.
The polymerization of vinyl chloride by the process according to the invention can be carried out in the block (in bulk) or in the presence of an inert organic medium. Depending on the temperature at which the polymerization is carried out, the process is carried out in a vessel under atmospheric pressure or in an autoclave under a pressure above atmospheric pressure.
In addition, since the organic antimony compounds are not decomposed by water, you can also work in an aqueous medium. The polymerization catalysts for vinyl chloride proposed according to the invention can therefore be used according to the well-known procedures which are referred to as emulsion polymerization and bead polymerization.
The polymers obtained by the process according to the invention are distinguished by an increased degree of crystallinity and increased thermal resistance.
The invention is explained in more detail in the following example. It is clear that this in no way restricts the scope of the invention, since it can be implemented in various variants without departing from the scope of the invention.
Example: 500 g of liquid vinyl chloride kept at -250 ° C. are placed in a flask equipped with a reflux condenser and stirrer. 5 g of antimony tripropyl and 2.5 g of silver nitrate are then added in the presence of 50 cm of methanol. During the entire duration of the polymerization, the temperature is kept at -25 ° C. and stirring is continued. After 5 hours, 50 g of polyvinyl chloride are obtained.
