EMI1.1
In order to prevent the formation of crystals on the anode and thus disturbances in the functioning of the instrument in the known electrolytic electricity meters, it has been proposed to arrange the anode above the cathode. According to the present invention, in electrolytic meters whose anode is lower than the cathode, the inconvenience of crystal formation on the anode is eliminated in that the electrolyte is kept in constant motion by a special device and its content of dissolved salts is at different levels of the Electrolytes is made uniform.
The drawing shows an embodiment of the new instrument. A disk b, which is best made of glass, with a central tube c, in which the platinum cathode d is located, is arranged just above the mercury anode a. The mercury is deposited on the cathode and the solution, which has become lighter as a result, flows up through the tube c and back to the anode, while the liquid, which has become heavier due to the uptake of mercury, flows from the anode towards the center. The device works exactly like a fireplace. The chimney effect can be enhanced by placing a heating spiral inside the tube c.
In order to enable convenient and precise measurement with this instrument, a funnel tube e is arranged below the cathode, which is bent laterally at the bottom and opens into an extremely fine opening f. The mercury that drips into the tube forms a small drop at the fine opening f. When a certain level of mercury filling is reached in the tube e, its pressure outweighs the surface tension of the drop and the tube runs empty. Its contents can be read on a scale on the tube; the emptying of the pipe into the lower space fills it by a division of the scalar pipe g. This scale tube shows units, whereas the scale on the tube shows e decimals.
