White opacifier for emails.
The invention relates to white opacifiers for enamels and glazes.
It is known that oxides of zirconium, cerium, titanium, tin, antimony and the like. Like. And mixtures thereof for clouding enamels, glazes and the like. Like. To use. Such oxides have also been used in the presence of small amounts of volatile acids, the organic acids having proven particularly suitable.
According to the present invention, you can use it to produce white opaque enamels and glazes, e.g. B. on sheet iron, with particular advantage of the basisehen sulfates of Ceroxvds, u. between the sulfates, which of the formula 4Ce02. 1SO aq to 4 Ce02. 3 803 aq. Basic; Ceria sulfates of this formula show an extraordinarily high opacity, so that relatively small amounts of the opacifying agent are sufficient to produce opacities of excellent whiteness and density.
Basic sulphates of cerium dioxide can, for. B. can be obtained by adding a slurry of cerium hydrate with an appropriate amount of sulfuric acid, separating the solution and drying the solid residue. Depending on the desired composition of the basic sulfates, the product obtained can also be heated in a suitable manner to drive off the water of hydration further.
It has also been found that the basic sulfates can be used with particular advantage in small amounts of basic compounds of the alkali or alkaline earth metals and of alumina or silica or two or more of the substances mentioned at the same time, eg. B. in the form of water glass can add.
It has been shown that with 2% of the product according to the invention, corresponding to less than 1% CeO 2, added to the frit in the mill, turbidity effects can be achieved which correspond approximately to the effect of 2% tin oxide.
It is known to use cerium oxide as a white opacifier. In contrast, the use of basic cerium sulfate offers the advantage of greater cheapness, since cerium sulfate is obtained as the first product of the digestion of monazite sand with sulfuric acid and cerium oxide can only be obtained therefrom through further expensive operations.
It is also already known to use white opacifiers from the group of the rare earth oxides together with compounds of silicon or aluminum. In contrast, white opacifiers, consisting of basic cerium oxide sulphate, which contain small amounts of additives such as compounds of alumina or silica, are new.
Example:
200 g of a white opacifying agent according to the invention of the weight-wise combination
EMI1.1
parts by weight of KjO are ground together with 6% of the usual enamelled clay and applied twice and baked in the usual way on a base enameled sheet. The opacity effect achieved in this way with 0-95% CeO2 is at least equivalent to the opacity effect obtained with 2% tin oxide.
