Description

Process for the production of translucent glass-like bodies The present invention relates to the manufacture of translucent Bodies made from glass-like materials that are difficult to melt. Such substances are u. a. also for making slopes for high pressure metal vapor discharge lamps and used in particular by umbrellas or tubes to be accommodated in these vessels, which shield the lamp vessel from the discharge column. With such an execution the discharge lamp it is then possible to manufacture the lamp vessel from a material, which is less resistant to discharge than that of the screen. The aim of the invention is to make bodies made of such resistant materials for the aforementioned Purpose and also to be provided for other uses where there is little light absorption is essential.

According to the invention, for the purpose of producing a translucent glass-like body, the melting point of which is over 150 ° C, a mixture of at least 85 ° / o aluminum and silicon oxide, at least 1 ° / o thorium oxide and at least 2 per cent. Beryllium oxide or magnesium oxide or mixtures thereof up to just below heated to the melting point and thus sintered. The mixture can optionally Additionally Contains lime, barium oxide or zirconium oxide.

The task of the thorium oxide present in the mixture is to to promote the transparency of the sintered body; it seems for this Purpose to be more suitable than most other oxides. On the other hand, however, it continues lower the melting point; but it is ineffective in this respect if only it is provided in the portion in order to obtain the necessary transparency. Lime also lowers the melting point, but improves the sintered body in terms of its editability; Barium oxide also makes it easier the machinability, but only slightly reduces the melting point. Zirconia increases the melting point, but it is usually not necessary; be Share should not be more than 3%.
