Manufacture of dovings for briquette presses from austenitic steel alloys.

Up to now, swallows for briquette presses have been made of manganese steel with about 12% manganese if they are to withstand particularly high loads. However, the manufacture of the dovings from this steel presents great difficulties because of the difficult workability of this steel.

The aim of the invention is to create dovetail joints which have a greater wear resistance than the manganese steel dovetail joints and which can nevertheless be produced easily. According to the invention, this purpose is achieved in that steel alloys are used for the production of the dovetails, which contain 0.6 to 2-5% carbon and 8 to less than 20% chromium with any individual or combined addition of tungsten up to 15%, molybdenum up to 12%, vanadium up to 6%, titanium up to 5% and which have an austenitic structure with embedded carbides as a result of quenching from the "(region, advantageously after the machinability and machining obtained by annealing with slow cooling.

This is because steels of the specified composition can be made easily workable by annealing treatment with slow cooling. After machining, the austenitic structure with embedded carbides is achieved in them by quenching them from the area, which is associated with extraordinary wear resistance. For example, steel alloys containing about 0-8 to 2% carbon, 8 to 12% chromium and 2 to 5% tungsten can be used to produce a dovetail joint according to the invention. A steel alloy falling into this alloy range with
 EMI1.1
Annealing at 850 to 880 C and subsequent slow cooling to a hardness of about 300 B. E. good machinability. Quenching at 11500 C makes the steel austenitic.

As practical tests have shown, its wear resistance in this state is significantly greater than that of manganese steel.
