EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and because they contain a minimum of the expensive alloying elements and any of the known ones
Melting processes can be produced. Furthermore, the alloys according to the invention can easily be hot worked or, if this is desired in certain types of applications, they can be cold worked without major difficulties.
The alloys which have the properties given above fall into the following composition ranges:
Carbon 0.35-0.60%
Manganese 8, 0 - 12, 0 0/0
Silicon 1, rJ1 / 0 max.
Chromium 6, 0-10, 0%
Nickel 4.0-8.0 yes
Vanadium 1, 1 - 1, 8 0/0
Sulfur 0.03% max.
Phosphorus 0.05% max.
Iron rest
In the alloys according to the invention, the austenitic structure is created by the manganese and nickel, and these two should therefore be used in such amounts that an austenitic structure is ensured; however, they should be kept within the limits given above in order to provide adequate non-magnetic properties. If manganese, nickel, or the other aforementioned elements are kept roughly within the stated limits, the maximum permeability of the alloys will be about 1, 2 or less when tested at 100 or 200 Oerstedt and will maintain their low permeability when they are subjected to cold working.
Vanadium, of course, has an impact on ductility and resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures, and it is therefore necessary that the vanadium be kept sufficiently low in order to avoid any of these adverse effects. Chromium naturally has a desirable effect on resistance to corrosion and oxidation. Therefore, the chromium content should be kept within the specified ranges in order to achieve adequate corrosion or oxidation resistance and at the same time ensure the desired precipitation hardening.
As is well known, steels melted in electric furnaces are normally found to have a small amount of nitrogen, which varies depending on the type of furnace used and the operating conditions. This nitrogen, as well as any small amounts of nitrogen that may be intentionally added, have no adverse effect on the desired properties of the steels according to the invention.
While the above broader compositional ranges provide alloys with the aforesaid properties, a preferred compositional range is as follows:
Carbon 0.45-0.60%
Manganese 8, 0-10, 0 0/0
Silicon 1, solo max.
Chromium 6.75 - 8.25%
Nickel 7.0-8.0%
Vanadium 1.35-1.65%
Sulfur 0.310 max.
Phosphorus 0.05% max.
Iron rest
A typical alloy according to the invention is the following:
Carbon 0.530/0
Manganese 9.0%
Silicon 0.5010
Chrome 7, 5 or similar
Nickel 7.50%
Vanadium 1, 50%
Sulfur 0.01%
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Phosphorus 0, 035cho

As stated above, the alloys are essentially non-magnetic and have a maximum permeability of about 1.2. In general, the alloys according to the invention have a permeability of less than 1.1.
For example, an alloy had a permeability of 1.008 when tested at 50 Oerstedt, and one of 1.009 when tested at 100 Oerstedt and at

Quenched in water, aged or tempered for 16 h at about 7040 C and cooled in the air. Another alloy according to the invention showed a permeability of 1.001 when tested at 100 Oerstedt and also when tested at 200 Oerstedt. This alloy was subjected to the same heat treatment as mentioned above. The magnetic properties of this

had when it was tested at 100 Oerstedt and furthermore when it was tested at 200 Oerstedt. This shows that the alloy is quite stable in terms of magnetic properties.
In order to determine the response to hardening of hot, rolled metal sheets according to the invention, samples were solution-treated (or subjected to a tempering treatment) for 1 h at 1093, 1149, 1177 and 12040 C, quenched in water, then hardened at various temperatures for 16 h and then quenched in the air. The Rockwell C hardness values obtained are given in Table I below.

In addition to the tests given above, the effects of cold reduction on the alloys according to the invention were determined. Hot-rolled sheets were first solution-treated for 1 hour at 11770 C and quenched in water. Some samples were subjected to cold reduction, the reductions being 10, 20, 30 and 40%. Some of the samples were then aged or tempered by heating them to the specified temperatures and quenching them for the specified times. The Rockwell C hardness values determined on these samples are given in Table III below.
