Process for the production of iron sulfate chloride containing water of crystallization.
Iron sulfate chloride is a non-hygroscopic iron salt, particularly suitable for tanning purposes. The same can be produced by the action of chlorine on iron vitriol, whereby it has already been proposed to use the iron vitriol in solid form or as an aqueous solution. With the known methods, however, obtaining a usable commercial product turns out to be rather cumbersome.
Tests that have been carried out have now shown that when using solid iron vitriol as the starting product and chlorine, particularly favorable results can be achieved and the desired end product can be obtained directly if a ferrous sulphate (FeS04) with a water content is used as the starting material which is lower than that of the crystallized iron vitriol. This fact is all the more remarkable because the chlorination takes place much more slowly due to the falling water content. The iron vitriol, which suitably has a content of 6 moles of water of crystallization per 1 mole of ferrous sulfate (FeSO4), is treated with chlorine in a closed apparatus under excess pressure until the divalent iron is oxidized to trivalent iron.
In order to obtain this starting material, suitable amounts of dehydrated and solid crystallized iron vitriol can be mixed together.
The process can be carried out, for example, as follows: 12 parts of dehydrated ferrous sulfate are intimately mixed with one another with 83 parts of crystallized ferrous sulfate in a finely ground state. The mass is in a closed apparatus equipped with a stirrer.
As soon as chlorine is now under an overpressure of% -2 atm. is initiated, the temperature rises as a result of the exothermic course of the reaction to the melting point of about 40, the melting point of the chlorination product. The agitator can now work more easily and the oxidation takes place more quickly. The chlorination is continued until all of the divalent iron has been oxidized to trivalent iron. After cooling, pure crystallized iron sulfate chloride with 6 mol of water of crystallization is present, which can be used immediately as a commercial product.
The reaction can also be carried out with a small supply of heat from the outside, in which case the final reaction temperature rises above the melting point of the mass.
