Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Process for the production of highly viscous polymerisation products of fatty oils.
EMI1.1
Using boron fluoride, the polymerization can be carried out at temperatures below 200, and even at temperatures below 100.
As far as the fatty oils are concerned, rapeseed oil, soybean oil and fish oil (whale oil) are mentioned here, which can be polymerized to high-viscosity products with the aid of the above-mentioned catalysts.
In some cases it is advantageous to clean the fatty oils beforehand in a manner known per se.
The method according to the invention can be illustrated by the following example:
A purified rapeseed oil is heated to 100 for 33 hours with one percent by weight boron fluoride.
The product obtained is taken up in the same volume of gasoline and extracted twice with the same volume of 50% alcohol.
The two liquid layers obtained are separated, a clear, yellow-colored polymerisation product remaining after the gasoline has evaporated from the upper layer. The product thus obtained was added in an amount of 6 percent by weight to a mineral oil with the following properties:
Engler viscosity at 37 ............................................. .. 15'01
Viscosity index V. 1 ..................................., .......... ........... 4. 9 (This number is known to give some indication of the degree of flattening of the viscosity temperature curve in the area between 38 and 99 C (100-210 F) in the sense that an oil with a flatter curve has a higher viscosity index than an oil with a steeper curve.)
The mixture obtained has a viscosity of 25'47 Engler at 370 ° C. and a viscosity index V. 1. of 73-2.
In some cases it is advantageous to refine the polymerization product in order to remove any dark compounds formed therein during the polymerization treatment. The polymerization can take place in the presence of mineral oil or another suitable medium.
